a day too late?

A few hours, actually, at least in terms of verbal reporting ... if they do let him play game one -- which for the W/L record they probably will -- there still should be a consequence to his hold out beyond "the deadline" ... While AGates had a more righteous case and is very redeemable at this point, removing all consequences from actions leads to the creation of TOads like TO and vermin like Rosenhatehim.

It's all fun and games until someone takes away a crybaby's woobie.

"oooh...okay, I guess I better report to camp then."

*cough*

No it's business. Gates probably thought they were bluffing but then realised they weren't.

Chargers say TE will miss season opener

By Kevin Acee

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

August 21, 2005

SCOTT LINNETT / Union-Tribune

Antonio Gates wants to cash in after his record-setting season with the Chargers.

Chargers roster

Stop talking, start kicking

The Chargers drew the line in the sand, and Antonio Gates has reluctantly stepped across.

He did not bow to the Chargers' demand, but he did alter his plan.

Gates is back in the fold, although his relationship with management is frayed and his actual debut is weeks away.

The All-Pro tight did not report to camp yesterday by the Chargers' afternoon deadline, but he plans to board a plane this morning and arrive in time for the team's exhibition today at Qualcomm Stadium against the St. Louis Rams.

He will watch the game from the sideline, which is where he will apparently stay through the season opener because the team will place him on the Roster Exempt List.

Perhaps more important in the long term, it appears negotiations between him and the club have deteriorated to the point Gates is leaning toward trying to leave after the season.

"Antonio will come in and we're moving toward restricted free agency," said Andre Colona, Gates' agent. "Antonio and I have moved on. We tried to get something done. We've accepted we disagree on what market value is. We're going to play for the $380,000. We're willing to negotiate up until the first game of the season. After that, Antonio doesn't want to deal with it."

This isn't an NFL suspension, it's an internal one, surely.  The Bolts can lift it when they like, no?  :D

Apparently once a team places a player on the roster-exempt list, they cannot reverse it themselves. The team has to appeal the roster-exempt status to the Commissioner, who has the sole authority to reverse it.

Only the team can appeal it, not the player or his agent.

SD drew a line in the sand and if they were to erase that line it would undermine their authority and position. Bottom line, Gates missed the deadline and should be required to do the time. IMO Gates is playing games thinking if he missed the deadline only by a day he will have made his point and the team will let him play because 'it was only 1 day'.

No way should the team lift the suspension.

I wonder how authoratative the Chargers will feel next year when Gates tells them to go flip themselves. 380 is just ridiculous for a TE of his caliber.

This line from Gates agent, Andre Colona, cracks me up;

"No one said Antonio wasn't going to report. For them to impose the Roster Exemption and say he had to miss games, they didn't have to do that."

Uhhh....yeah the did have to do that.

It wasn't until they placed the roster-exempt status on him, that you got your client to report you frickin' dufus. :D

The Chargers are in a great position. Next year, they can match ANY offer Gates gets. This year, if he signs the one year tender, the Chargers get a bargain, and can sign him to the big money next year, as long as he proves he was not a fluke. Or he could sign the long term offer the Chargers are currently offering, which is less than the top TE's in the league. Either way, Gates is a Charger, and the Chargers win. They are using the system perfectly.

Sad but true. Gates makes a bad move by reporting IMO. He has to have another banner year to prove last year wasn't a fluke. If he plays for the $380K, he risks injury. If he comes out of this year on top, the Bolts still get the draft picks if they don't meet the offer. He only has to play 6 games, so he should have held out longer. SD wins in this one, and so does my FF team if he plays.

I don't think only playing 6 games was an option they were even considering. I'm not sure that is even the case anymore. Brian Westbrook had to report in training camp or he risked losing a year of accrued service. I haven't seen any mention of this with Gates though.

I understand what your saying but the offers for him next season will far surpass what the Chargers could have gotten him for this season. I feel they have shown no appreciation for his efforts last year and I hope they pay dearly for their hardline stance!

Obviously not. Gates will get a top-TE contract offer next year. That is what he wants THIS year. The Chargers agree that Gates is worth more than $380K, but want to lock Gates into a less than market value contract for the next 6 years, and Gates obviously won't sign it. Either way, Gates gets top money, he may just have to wait another year, as long as he comes out and proves he was not a one year wonder. If Gates signs the one year tender, the Chargers get a top TE at a bargain basement price this year, and pay him his value next year. If Gates decides he want more money this year, he has to sign a long term deal worth less than the top tight ends. Either way, the Chargers win too.

I think this hardlined approach is incorrect for this scenario. Every great coach will tell you they treat every player fair, but every player gets treated differently. Gates, so far, has never displayed T.O.-like behavior and his holdout was fully justified. He wasn't even under contract, so his holdout is nothing like Walker, T.O. and the likes. Gates $380,000 is clearly a low-ball figure. He set the league record for TDs last year and is a bonified stud. I'm not saying he should be getting Gonzo money after one year, but he needs to be compensated fairly. The Chargers, I hope, get theirs when Gates signs with someone else next year. They Oprahed up IMO.
