DMD
Cedric Benson - RB, Chicago Bears 08/29/05 At the press conference announcing Cedric Benson, HC Lovie Smith said that Benson would not participate in the final preseason game this Thursday since he would realistically only have about a day to prepare. Smith said that Benson would start out at the bottom of the depth chart like all rookies but also repeatedly stated how excited he was to have Benson here "and smiling". There is no timetable for getting him on the field but the Bears are looking for Benson "to be a big part" of the offense this season. Huddle Up: Benson was given a conditioning test to see where he was at physically and Smith said that Benson was "in great shape" and had been keeping up his conditioning. There is an obvious risk in drafting Benson in your league, but he could end up as a steal in many leagues since he will not be seen in any preseason game. Thomas Jones will be the starting running back until the coaching staff feels confident that Benson can handle the playbook. That could take a while but since Benson is a four year starter entering the NFL as a mature player, it may only take a matter of only a few weeks. Trots
Just how many teams did DMD draft Benson in anyway? Seems like the glass is half-full when it comes to Benson.
CaptainHook
I've got Thomas Jones as a back-up RB in 32 More Homers. DMD keeps raining on my parade. Edited August 29, 2005 by CaptainHook

redcoltfan
Hey DMD, How quickly does Benson get into DA bears line-up? I drafted Thomas Jones for a bye week filler-week 3. Jones plays the first month and then BENSON takes over? Thoughts please-Bears homers-all interested parties.

Benson will probably be played sparingly in the first two games. I see him getting 50% of the carries in the 3rd game, or week 3. During the bye week 4, Chicago's bye week, they will work on Benson's pass blocking, and he will be the starter from Week 5 on, getting about 80% or more of the load. JMO. Bill Swerski
i dont see them paying a guy that kind of money to sit on the bench, 955346[/snapback] Why not? That's exactly what they've been doing with Grossman for the past two seasons.

I was gonna do the back to back Bear RB draft selection, then you stepped in and grabbed Benson

I dont know who they are they did not say.

But yeah, I'm a Bears fan, so despite maybe losing a diamond in the rough pick, I am happy. Plus I still have Edge and SJax
Chavez
Why not? Pope Flick
My main worry is all about missing camp and pulling a hammy, etc. There've been no studies that I know of so I'll throw it out there: how often does a player that misses a lenghty amount of camp get injured during the first 5-6 weeks of the year? Wasn't Edge's injury after a hold out? I recall a WR too, but cannot remember the name....anyone?

Sad, but true.
