League Voting

Our league has never used a league vote for things...ever. I have two buddies that want to implement league voting on all trades and to over-rule the commish. Although we have never had a problem in 5 years, I guess its just one of those "what if" things. I am not a fan of league voting at all. I also know that many of the people here at the Huddle don't like it either.

I tried to go back and find other posts regarding the issue, but it was taking forever. What are your thoughts on league voting? Have you found success or has it been a recipe for diaster?

Any thoughts on the idea of voting would be great. Thanks all.

Recipe for disaster.

My leagues have two times there are votes...

offseason rules changes (though I sometimes think I should go more dictator here as no one wants to vote for better of the league, just for better of their individual team)

And for trades that go through and an owner is willing to call the other two owners out as cheaters accusing them of collusion. Then it goes to a league vote.

I have found that leagues that require a vote for all trades become pissing contests with people voting to reject every trade jsut because they are not involved or one of their division rivals gets stronger from the trade... which is the point of trading anyway..

I'm not a big fan of league voting to approve trades. Most of the time, it seems that owners vote on whether or not they feel a trade is "fair" versus to determine whether or not there is collusion.

Perhaps the best way to implement this would be to only vote if 1/3 or more of the owners have filed a complaint with the commish. A compromise that should mollify the "what if" crowd, but one that shouldn't interfere with routine trades.

This is a better way of saying what I was trying to say.

League votes to approve a trade stink. The primary reason for a trade is so both teams can benefit. Because of this fact, it is in the other owners' best interest to veto a trade, unless they have their own improvements in mind (not common).

The best I've found in 20 years running a FFL league is the commissioner veto. It's in his best interest to run a tight ship anyway. If anything, owners comments should be advisory.

Our present league has voting on rule changes. Especially, since our website is evolving as we get time to work on it, new features often call for a vote to implement.

In the league I commish, we don't have votes to approve trades, however, owners can vote to nullify them. We put a limit on the number of "challenges" they are allowed, so they can't just vote everything down. Truth be told, however, everybody in my league is so paranoid that there hasn't been a trade in a couple of years!

Try this, "If I haven't proven myself to be fair, balanced, and impartial or you feel you can't trust me to make the right decision for this league, then I suggest you move on to a league you feel more comfortable with."

I am of course assuming you or the commissioner is all of those things.

Hey Ralph,

I posted a similar question earlier this summer. I dont like votes. Our league uses the following format. The commish is a dictator. That is me. The reason is that over the 5 years of our league there have been two trades negated and both of them were mine. While both were of questionable value, the issue of collusion was not the primary factor in either case but our rules allowed that commish trades were voted on. One of the trades, I had posted commentary for 5 weeks practically begging for a deal.

The point is, that the commish is routinely faced with making decisions in the best interest of the league. If you tilt the balance toward you, nobody will show up next year. If you turn decisions to a vote during the season, I see no way that you are not gonna get people making decisions based on personal interests. That is not a knock against the guys (and gals) in my league or any other league. It aint easy being commish. You usually have a tougher road than anybody else just to stay above the straight and narrow.

Our resolution for this year is the following. Commish approves all trades, even his own. Any approval or denial can be appealed to a competition committee which I appointed at our draft...three people...who can idependently review and make a recommendation to the commish. The commish can then accept or reject that recommendation. If I frivolously reject the recommendation, I risk chasing guys. If I truly disagree and can present a different case...well, thats just part of the job.

Each year at the draft, I remind ALL owners that it is not the commissioners job to protect them from being poor owners. That they own their team and they alone are responsible for running it. The commish should only step in if there is a question of collusion or just absolute lunacy....like say Domminick Rhodes for Edgerrin James. I mean there are some things that you would have to step in and block even if there wasnt collusion...but if you have a good group of people that should never really happen.

Rule changes and all other rulings made during the season are put to a simple majority vote.

Dont know how it works, but we crafted this from the same question you are asking now, based on answers I received earlier.

Hope this helps.

I think it was your thread I was looking for earlier.

My league is with a group of close friends and great guys. We've never had an issue with anyone trying to overturn the commish. Someone just brought it up and is making a push to get something added to the rules. I guess I have to be more of a dictator about ideas like this. I guess if a league is going to allow votes, it should be something like the committee you mentioned, although I would just rather not have voting at all.

Thanks for the info.

Guys, in our league we assign a deputy commish to oversee whatever the commish does. This is a "right hand man" and somebody who has been in the pool for many many years. There are other reasons for this - the commish has "god" powers to add free agents after the wire goes by (e.g. Joe was on vacation and away from the Inet and called me personally...), which needs some sort of check to avoid corrupt use of the powers.

I wouldn't want to keep playing in a league like that. What fun would it be if you can't make a simple trade without everyone getting bent out of shape? Some people just can't play well together... I'd find a group that does if I were you.

In our league, we vote on trades and generally people are pretty good about being fair in the voting. I traded Dom Davis for Steven Davis two seasons ago, and that went through (though in retrospect I kind of wish it hadn't). Last year we had a trade of Reggie Wayne for Domanic Rhodes early in the season, and that was passed. In this year's draft, we had a trade of Peyton Manning for Priest Holmes, along with a swap of second rounders, and that was passed.

Generally, we only get a couple trades a year in my main league. And the nature of the league is such that if a commissioner took over trades and screwed things up badly, it would be the commissioner that would be booted out of the league by the owners.

Especially in the pickup leagues you see in the Huddle forums, I would never join a league that did not have owner voting. Otherwise you would have a core group that could go on screwing over new owners with impunity, because they could just recruit 4-5 new guys on the internet next year.

I have installed league voting in our league this year.

Mainly as a check n' balance.

Voting poll will only occur if 4 owners file a complaint and they need 7 of 10 to overturn.

We have never had a major issue, but I wanted a check n' balance in place to prevent the whinners from accusing me from being to powerful.
