Jaguars at Colts

Edgerrin James has typically not had "great" games against the Jags defense. In the last 6 meetings, Edge has been held under 100 yards rushing and only scored once. He has had combined yardage of over 100 yards in all but one game:

10/03/04 at Jax 19 carries 83 yards 1 TD; 3 catches 25 yards

10/24/04 at Indy 18 carries 87 yards; 6 catches 54 yards

9/21/03 at Indy 27 carries 76 yards; 3 catches 28 yards (broke transverse process in back and missed 3 games)

11/09/03 at Jax 15 carries 44 yards; 6 catches 26 yards

9/08/02 at Jax 26 carries 99 yards; 2 catches 11 yards

12/29/02 at Indy 15 carries 86 yards; 4 catches 33 yards

The Colts have used the TE position effectively against the Jaguars. In four of the last 6 games, a TE has scored. Clark is a must start this week. If your having problems at TE, Ben Utecht is worth a look. The Colts almost always use a TE screen play against Jax.

10/03/04 at Jax Marcus Pollard 3 receptions 33 yards 1 TD

....................... Dallas Clark 0 catches

10/24/04 at Indy Marcus Pollard 3 receptions 52 yards (dropped a sure TD)

.........................Dallas Clark 3 receptions 36 yards 1 TD

09/21/03 at Indy Marcus Pollard 0 receptions

.........................Dallas Clark 4 receptions 16 yards

11/09/03 at Jax Marcus Pollard 3 receptions 92 yards 1 TD

........................Dallas Clark 2 receptions 43 yards

09/08/02 at Jax Marcus Pollard 3 receptions 34 yards (Clark was in college)

12/29/02 at Indy Marcus Pollard 5 receptions 39 yards 1 TD

Reggie Wayne struggled against Jax last year, but had his break-out game against them in '03:

10/03/04 at Jax 2 catches 20 yards

10/24/04 at Indy 2 catches 28 yars

9/21/03 at Indy 10 catches 141 yards 2 TD

11/09/03 at Jax 6 catches 46 yards

9/08/02 at Jax 2 receptions 35 yards

12/29/02 at Indy 3 receptions 29 yards

Marvin Harrison has been cosistent:

10/03/04 at Jax 4 receptions 45 yards 1 TD

10/24/04 at Indy 5 receptions 70 yards 2 TD

9/21/03 at Indy 4 receptions 31 yards

11/09/03 at Jax 1 reception 30 yards (left game with pulled hamstring)

9/08/02 at Jax 4 receptions 34 yards 1 TD

12/29/02 at Indy 6 receptions 28 yards

It's not like your going to bench Peyton Manning:

10/03/04 at Jax 20/29 220 yards 2 TD 1 INT

10/24/04 at Indy 27/39 368 yards 3 TD

9/21/03 at Indy 21/33 216 yards 2 TD 1 INT

11/09/03 at Jax 28/45 347 yards 2 TD 2 INT

9/08/02 at Jax 19/31 211 yards 3 TD

12/29/02 at Indy 20/28 146 yards 1 TD

Jimmy Smith is a MUST start:

10/03/04 at Jax 3 catches 59 yards 1 TD

10/24/04 at Indy 5 catches 113 yards 1 TD

9/21/03 at Indy (suspended)

11/09/03 at Jax 4 catches 87 yards 1 TD

9/08/02 at Jax 8 catches 104 yards

12/29/02 at Indy 3 catches 35 yards

Fred Taylor would be a decent start as well:

10/03/04 at Jax 21 carries 68 yards; 3 receptions 31 yards

10/24/04 at Indy 20 carries 107 yards; 5 receptions 67 yards

9/21/03 at Indy 17 carries 126 yards; 3 receptions 11 yards

11/09/03 at Jax 28 carries 152 yards 2 TD

9/08/02 at Jax 24 carries 83 yards 1 TD; 4 receptions 35 yards

12/29/02 at Indy 15 carries 73 yards 1 TD; 1 reception 14 yards

Byron Leftwich:

10/03/04 at Jax 29/41 318 yards 1 TD

10/24/04 at Indy 23/30 300 yards 2 TD 1 INT

9/21/03 at Indy 4/5 32 yards 1 TD (Came in for Brunell at end of game)

11/09/03 at Jax 12/22 179 yards 1 TD

Oops! I forgot about the leading Colts receiver for Week 1!

The Jags really did not have an answer for Brandon Stokley last year:

10/03/04 at Jax 8 receptions 97 yards

10/24/04 at Indy 7 receptions 112 yards

Great Job Captain!

The problem that Edge is going to have is running up the middle against the two DT Pro Bowlers. I just don't see IND running much inside the 5. But I love the fact that Edge does catch some passes every meeting, and it is the home opener for IND. So maybe Edge will score a TD...

Cap'n, you've officially become the front runner for the "best homer info" award in my book.  Rovers was up there, but he's slipping.  You da man. :D

:D

Guess we're all glad Captain's not a Niner fan. Something tells me he wouldn't have as much interest in doing this sort of thing for such a lousy team! Fortunately, the Colts are fun to write about, especially offensively.

Again, great job... :D

I was gonna ad that it doesn't hurt to be a homer of the most explosive offense in the NFL. Peace.

Further making Jimmy Smith a good start is the fact the Colts put CB Donald Strickland on IR Wednesday. Also, SS Joseph Jefferson will miss the game against Jacksonville with turf toe. Mike Doss, who did not play all pre-season due to a groin strain, and missed Week 1 to a suspension, should start a SS.

That means that Smith will probably be covered by 5'8" Jason David who gets burned at least once a week, or rookie Marlin Jackson who will be playing in his first game.

So this begs the question: Who will be guarding Williams and Jones? Dungy's 14 year old son?

Actually, even with Strickland on IR, the Colts are still deep (but young) at CB.

Judging by how they played last year, Harper will cover Williams. David will be on Smith. Rookie Marlin Jackson will probably play the slot on Jones.

I bet Harper moves into cover the slot on third downs though.

It's really hard to say how they'll use Marlin Jackson yet, since he did not play against Baltimore.

Second round pick CB Kelvin Hayden will see some playing time as well.

If Leftwich is predicted to have a good game against the colts how do you think Matt Jones will fair in the mix with Lefty?

Although Leftwich has had some good games against the Colts, it's been mainly yardage. He's had one TD pass three times. His high is 2 TD passes. And the Jags love to go to Jimmy Smith against the Colts. It's hard to get a feel for what the Jags have planned for Jones, although they seem to have a lot of red zone packages for him, judging by the Seattle game. I'm sure he'll line up at QB a few times.

Nice job Cap'n.  As a Clark owner, I was very happy to hear he practiced yesterday and said he would play.  Your review gets me that much more excited, especially since that TD probably would have went to him last week.

Manning went to the TE three other times against Baltimore as well. Twice Utecht hadn't got his head around in time to find the pass. The third time was in the end zone as well, where Reed and Utecht collided. Dallas will be a big part of this offense.
