Ed Reed

He's killing me! He was supposed to be the stud holding down my IDPs. We only play 3 and they can all be LBs, but we play DL and DBs too.

Is this is what I get for not paying as much attention to IDPs as I do to offensive players? Changes in coaches can certainly impact players, but I figured that Reed is a stud and would be utilized as such. I'm not going to drop the reigning defensive MVP, but do I need to expect pedestrian numbers from him for the rest of the year?

What do you defensive gurus think?

I have the same question, and I don't know enough about defensive schemes to make an informed decision. For offense, it's easy...for example, I have Reggie Wayne and his numbers are down this year. But I know the Colts have changed to emphasize running the ball and their defense is much improved, so they don't need to throw as much. When I look at Reed or my "stud" DLs Peppers and Charles Grant, all I see are pathetic numbers week after week and I have no idea why. Have these teams changed their schemes, or are their opponents doing a better job of accounting for them, or is another player now the stud at that position?

I wish there was more info available about valuable free agent IDP players, start/bench recommendations, and just defensive schemes in general, to help understand how to play the matchups.

it has to do with many different factors....

1: 46 Defense is part of the equation

2: the other part is Reed is a BIG PLAY guy and he hasnt gotten those BIG PLAYS(ie: INTS etc)....if you are counting on a player to post exceptional numbers due to big plays(IE: INTs and TD's) then you are going to be sorely dissappointed...

fwiw ...i would have expected a bit more production from him but you have to be leary of the big play points and expecting them

I don't think it is the defense scheme as much as it is the game plan of opposing offenses. I don't recall if it was in SI or ESPN the Rag, there was a short article on just this subject. Safteys get most of their picks on intermediate and deep passes, primarily on deep passes, and now teams are just more aware of Reed, and aren't taking shots down the field against the Ravens. It stated that both Reed and the D coordinator are disappointed, but there is not a lot you can do, when teams play conservative. IMO it is very similar to CB's. You don't pick a lock down CB for your fantasy team, you pick the guy on the other side, because that is where they will be throwing. Same principal here. Opposing defenses have figured out Reed is just to good to take on, so everything is going underneath.

Amazing. Was just looking at Reed's 2004 stats...In 11 games he recorded 2 or 3 solo tackles, and in only 5 did he have more than 3. All the INTs were what made him a monster, especially the 2 INT game and the one he returned for a TD against Cleveland.

I'll take a 3 point day from a DB if I can get a 10 pointer once in a while too...at this point I feel like I should cut bait with Reed. The explanation about teams avoiding him makes sense. Ditto the #2 CB theory. Good stuff, thanks....

Hopefully Reed will do something against Cleveland so I can sell high.
