I vote for SF.  Close to impossible to get a bad meal.

Bier and Detlef, I'm expecting some good discussion here.

Seattle hands down.

I have been a lot of places, and without a doubt Seattle has the best selection, enviroments, and value.

NYC and it's not even close

You have to love getting 3 definitive, no question about it answers. Especially when all three are different.

I haven't eaten in Seattle, but I have eaten many places in NY, SF, Boston (like, everywhere), Providence, Philly, Miami, Denver, LA, Chicago, Cinci, Atlanta, and maybe a couple other major cities that I am spacing. I would have to agree that I had the best dining experiences in SF. New York would be second. Boston third, but then again that because I live here and used to eat out at restaurants 5 nights a week...

Go to Chicago, and you'll change your mind...

Steaks, hot dogs, brats/sausages, pizza, heck even the more "ethnic" food (Cuban, Mexican, etc.) is pretty darn good there. I've been to Chicago countless times, and every time I go, I swear the most common of meals tastes better there than anywhere else...

Chicago and Las Vegas close second. Never ate in NY.

LA wasn't all that great. San Diego had good stuff. Jim Croce's Wife's restaurant was great! Maui...just ok. Austin...good.

My guess is that NYC would have to be #1 just based on volume of fine restraunts...but if you are talking restraunts per capita, I can't see how any of these cities would beat out Las Vegas, where every casino on the strip and many off the strip offer several first class dining options all under one roof. Additionally, there are dozens of great places to eat outside of the casinos that locals could share with you if anyone wanted a "locals experience".

eh, it seriously is not close. NYC has by far the greatest ethnic diversity, it attracts the top top chefs, etc. maybe you're likely get a better steak in chicago, a better etouffe in new orleans, a better sourdough in san fran. but i doubt any of them can compare overall.

As much as it pains me to agree with Az, he's probably right here. I've never been to NYC, but most experts and critics put it at the top of the list. My homer vote would be for New Orleans, however, and it wouldn't be just for etouffee or gumbo. A ton of fantastic places to eat.

Havgin grown up in New England and spending plenty of time in Boston and NYC, I gotta say that DC beats them both. The culture is decidely mixed with no one large ethnic minority dominating. You end up with great food from all over the world (literally) not just from smaller regions around the world. Although NYC has more 5 start restaurants than DC.

only cities on the list i haven't eaten in are Atlanta, Philly, Dal, memphis.

in order:

SF

NY

Sea/Bos

NO/LA

DC

Chi

Mia

All of the cities are culinary powerhouses:

NY- shear # of quality restaurants

Sea- fanstastic seafood, beautiful surroundings.

Bos- again, very good seafood

NO- cajun/creole is electric (so many influences), mystical city

LA- chic/trendy, but still very good (plastic- no soul)

DC- over last 10 years really came up in the world

Chi- top restaurants are sensational (has a lot-o-soul)

Mia- cuban/carribean influences are awesome (again- plastic)

reason why i didn't list Vegas: great food, but chefs are from all of those other areas.

SF- % of high quality restaurants. most innovative cuisine.... it moves the US's food world. also remarkably scenic..... napa/sonoma is close (so access to some of the world's best wines, and when there one feels transported to italy or france).... also has a lot of heart/soul.

edit: i am strictly rating fine dining paired with ambiance of the city itself.

yeah, new orleans is awesome. and you're right, there's actually a ton of ethnic (and therefore food) diversity there. and actually...historically, i don't think new orleans is very cajun at all. but it is french, italian, creole, latin, carribean...plus the influence of everything coming down the mississippi. definitely one of the top food cities not only in the country but in the world. but NYC is just bigger and a little bit more everything.

I don't like Oriental food, I don't like goat so any ayhrab country is out, don't like food from India, I don't like cajun food. So diversity does little for me as far as food goes.

Boston was pretty good. I like Mexican food so San Antonio is great. But I'd have to say overall, Madison followed by Elgin, Texas then Austin.

Parthenon Gyros

Brats from the Brathaus (I prefer white...many prefer red)

Rocky Roccoco Pizza (in house)

Pizza Pit Pizza (delivered)

Popcorn in the window of the Pub

Prior to Rita that was a no brainer, it was New Orleans. Now, I'm really not sure. Most large metropolitan areas offer about the same thing. Sure some San Antonio might have better Mexican food, and San Fran might have better Chinease food, and New York might have better Italian, Madison might have better brats, and Philly might have better cheese steaks, Dallas and KC might have better BBQ, but overall with the exception of what NO used to be, all Metropolitan areas offer about the same.

Perch, with all respect, I have to disagree.

I do not mean to dis any communities here. IMO, any city's speciality (eg cheesesteaks in Philly, brats in Milwaukee) are great.

However, some cities such as San Fran and Seattle are foodie cities. Like-minded people flock there. It's like comparing France to England at times. The French take a lot of interest in food. Their food is good. English food is generally sh!ct.
