Anyone know the story? 1176107[/snapback] Yeah they put him on IR earlier this week. Updated: Nov. 23, 2005, 7:00 PM ET Texans place Buchanon on injured listAssociated Press National Football League News Wire HOUSTON -- Phillip Buchanon's disappointing first season with the Houston Texans ended Wednesday when he was put on injured reserve list with a high ankle sprain. Houston signed rookie cornerback Chris McKenzie from the practice squad to fill Buchanon's spot. Coach Dom Capers said he made the move because it will likely take Buchanon at least five weeks to heal and the team needed another cornerback. Buchanon was Houston's biggest offseason acquisition when he was obtained from Oakland in exchange for second- and third-round picks in this year's draft. The former first-round pick came from the Raiders with a reputation as a disgruntled prima donna, but Texans officials touted him as a hard worker and tremendous athlete. But his skills didn't translate into much production on the field. He started early in the season, but was benched after just two games for poor play and contributed mostly as a nickel cornerback until recently. The fourth-year player got back in the starting lineup against Kansas City last weekend because of an injury to his replacement, Demarcus Faggins, but twisted his ankle while attempting a tackle in the third quarter. "It's been an up-and-down year," coach Dom Capers said of Buchanon's time in Houston. "It started out tough. I thought Phillip handled it very well. He came back and made some progress." Buchanon had a good game in Houston's win over Cleveland, knocking down a pass in the end zone that would have given the Browns the victory. He came to Houston after having 50 tackles and three interceptions in 14 games last season. He has 11 interceptions in his three-year career, four of which he returned for touchdowns. He has also returned three punts for touchdowns. He had 29 tackles this season and defended four passes, but he often missed tackles and didn't cover well. Buchanon was roundly criticized after he appeared to not even try to tackle Pittsburgh running back Willie Parker as he ran for a touchdown against the Texans. With Faggins still nursing a hamstring injury and listed as doubtful, Houston will likely start Lewis Sanders at right cornerback against St. Louis on Sunday. Sanders, in his sixth year, has played on special teams in eight games this season and started at nickel back in the second meeting with Indianapolis. He had an interception against Kansas City that set up a Texans touchdown. "His stock has risen," Capers said. "He had a slow start, but when he's had his opportunities he's gone in and done well. I've got confidence in Lewis." Buchanon also returned punts for the Texans, which leaves another hole to fill. His best punt return of the season was a 37-yarder Sunday. Capers said he is looking at several potential replacements, including kick returner Jerome Mathis, running back Domanick Davis and cornerback Dunta Robinson. Davis left LSU three years ago with school records for kickoff and punt return yardage. Robinson hasn't returned punts for Houston, but the second-year player who had some work in that area in college is eager to try it.<
