wiegie
The wines for tonight are: Napa Ridge (coastal vines) 2003 ($7.99 - $10.99) & Argyle 2004 ($14.99-$19.99) (Duck Pond 2004 ($14.99) will also work) You don't have to know sh|t about wine to enjoy the evening (as I proved last week). We meet in the chat-room at 10:00 EST.

KICK A$$ BLASTER
Well how did the tasting go??
twiley
My notes are at home but here's what I remember: The Duck Pond was interesting, it gave off a barnyard/earthy nose. It fell flat about mid-pallette and finished off with a subtle cherry finish. It was the least favorite of the 3. The Napa Ridge possesed the mainstream characteristics of a Pinot Noir. Cedar nose with full fruit up front with hints of smoke and black cherry. This wine would be a safe bet for any dinner party and at $8 a bottle you can't go wrong. I didn't have the argyle but "peat" kept coming up during the discussion. Good times again last night.

wiegie
I thought the Napa Ridge was straightforward and pleasant. It's not a wine that is going to blow anybody's socks off, but it would definitely not offend anyone at a dinner party--and at $8, it would be a wine that I would buy again. The Argyle seemed esoteric to me. When I first sense of it was that it reminded me of a sidecar (the drink with triple-sec, cognac and lemon juice). SeattleLawDawg pointed out that it was heavy on currant, and after he said that, I took another whiff and sure enough I the currant smell was then obvious. It seemed "alcoholy" to me in way that I didn't particularly care for myself, but couldn't place. Then SLD suggested "peat" and I think that is what it was. The wine smelled sort of like scotch somehow. This morning when I woke up I could still taste it in my mouth and I still wasn't a fan. I have about 2/3 of the bottle left still, so I am going to go back and revisit it tonight to see if I like it better. I will taste it before I taste what I have left from the Napa Ridge, so as not to bias my taste buds. (Edit to add: I just had a little bit of some bitter dark chocolate and it reminded me of the Argyle for some reason. Perhaps that was in there too. ) Edited December 7, 2005 by wiegie
wiegie
I am going to go back and revisit it tonight to see if I like it better. 1199279[/snapback] well, I think I am at the same place I was last night: I still like the Napa Ridge better and the Argyle still has a smell that is too "alcoholy" for me--I think tonight that it smells a little bit like some quince liquor that I have. Some might like this in a wine, but I don't. I've noticed that the Argyle is a fair amount duller in color and clarity than the Napa Ridge (even though the NR is a 2003 and the Argyle is a 2004). The NR is still garnet and crisp in appearance but the Argyle shows some sign of bricking and is duller. My wife however, did find the smell of the Argyle pleasant (something that I did not).
