Police: Thousands Stolen From OSU Roommates Hawk, Mangold

Movies, Cash, DVDs Allegedly Taken

UPDATED: 12:18 pm EST December 6, 2005

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Police said that an apartment belonging to Ohio State football players A.J. Hawk and Nick Mangold was burglarized in the days following the team's win over Michigan.

According to a Columbus Division of Police report, the burglary occurred sometime between Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. and Nov. 23 at 8 p.m.

Hawk, Mangold, and a third roommate, Jonathan Thomas, told police that their apartment in the 100 block of West Norwich Avenue was broken into and about $3,000 in cash, $1,425 in movies, two laptop computers, a $500 Gucci watch, two Microsoft X-Box games valued at a total of $500, a Sony Playstation game valued at $250 were taken.

"I don't have a lot, and now that little bit that I have is now gone," Mangold said.

Mangold, the Buckeyes' center, told NBC 4's Duarte Geraldino that he received a phone call from Hawk, telling him that their apartment was burglarized.

Police were not told about the crime until Nov. 28, according to their report.

Hawk and Mangold, both senior captains, helped lead the Buckeyes to the Big Ten Conference co-championship this past season. The Buckeyes received a Bowl Championship Series bid and will play Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 2.

Mangold said that he plans to take his valuables home, to Centerville, Ohio, but said he would have a few choice words for the thieves.

"Why do you have to do something like that -- to mess with a poor college kid's stuff?" Mangold said.

Hawk, a linebacker, who is up for numerous national awards, was out of town on Tuesday and was not available for comment.

Like you said, they don't sound 'poor' at all. Wow..if someone had stolen my stuff while in college, they'd have gotten about $20 in cash (only on Friday afternoon and only if I'd been to the ATM that week,) used/soiled clothes, a used baseball glove, Timex digital watch worth $10 and some Cheetos. But hey, that was way back in the 80's. With inflation, and uh....

What's to explain??

Hawk is from Centerville ,one of Ohio's richest cities/cap.

I had all of that and more in college and none of it was any of my roommates either

Well if you had that kind of money, why didn't you come to a real school like USC, surfing and ogling perfect chicks (also originally from the Midwest,) on the beach in the winter, instead of friggin freezing? :D Just joking, dude. We don't have the room for everybody out here anyway...

Just because you have money or many worldly possessions doesn't mean you won't accept "gifts." I'd hate for it to be true, 'cause I respect Hawk on the field, but it wouldn't surprise me either.

Of course, just because you have $6k worth of crap in your dorm room doesn't mean you were given it by a booster. OSU doesn't exactly have a good track record in that arena, though.

If they investigate and and hold him out of the ND game, I'd like to change my bets. :D

Oh wait, I know this one. Later on Hawk will apologize and say that he exaggerated the amount of stuff stolen. The NCAA will investigate, suspend, blah, blah, blah... He'll end up drafted at the end of Round 3 instead of the first, blah, blah... Cut before the regular season, blah...

What's that? Hawk's a white guy? Nevermind what I said then...
