twiley
I had many Delirium Tremens and Chimay Red Ales tonight. Great tasting beers! Anyone have any thoughts on these or further recommendations?
Rovers
Tonight I had "Hoptical Illusion" from the Blue Point brewery. Very nice American IPA... cascade hops. Pretty much over the top hoppy. Hell, any Chimay is gonna be great. I like the Belgians, but not for quaffing. For one thing, you'de need very deep pockets to quaff Belgians, but they are a near wine cross-over to me. Try a Unibrue if you can find it.... it's Canadian, out of Montreal, and the brewmaster was the head brewer at Chimay for 10 years. Chimay would not let him do anything other than the recipes they already had, and he wanted to get more experimental. Unibrou has one beer that tastes more like cream sherry than beer. Interesting stuff.

Anyone have any thoughts on these or further recommendations? 1200378 Try the Chimay Blue label! I love the new 11 oz. bottles! Or for a "different" beer that welcomes aging like Chimay does, pick up a bottle of La Folie from New Belgium... It can occasionally be found at liqour stores... “The idea was to create an intentionally sour effect, though not as intense as that in the famous Belgian beer, Rodenbach. The finished beer, called La Folie, has a dark pinkish-amber color; a sustained bead; a toffee-like start; then apple and passion fruit notes. The label suggests that the beer be left to breathe for ten minutes. During that period, firmness and acidity seem to come to the fore. Quite sour in finish but a beautifully balanced beer.” Michael Jackson, Beer Writer Or for the snob in you, pick up one of Samuel Adams $100+ bottles of beer! Anyone have any thoughts on these or further recommendations? 1200378 i've heard a few different people mention delirium tremens favorably, but i don't think i've had it. chimay red is possibly my least favorite of the three chimays, but it's still great. very well balanced with nice complexity and all that, but if i remember right it has this sort of prevalent clove flavor (or is it nutmeg?) that i'm not really fond of. the westmalle dubbel is comparable to chimay red and excellent, and seems to be fairly widely available in 11 oz. bottles. a couple more pale belgian ales (like the DT) that i heartily recommend are orval (another trappist brew, sort of hard to come by) and duvel. duvel is widely available, and one of the handful of very best beers in the world, IMO. I'll have to try that next time.
