For those of you new to the boards this is a thread we run each year to determine the best & worst of the Huddle message boards from the past year. The rules are simple, quote this post and fill in the blanks with your picks for the category. Please leave all categories whether you voted in them or not. It makes it easier to track everything. I also ask that you try your best to give one answer for each category, but as we’ve seen in the past for some categories it’s just too hard to do. I also ask that when possible you provide a link to the thread you’ve voted for. No votes are set in stone until the voting is closed. Up until that time votes can be changed and votes can be added to your post. The voting will run as long as the thread is fairly active then once voting slows to a halt they will be tallied and posted. Since Rovers did such a fantastic job last year I nominate him to track the scores. A few changes have been made this year as usual. Thanks to the help of several Huddlers a few categories have been deleted and some better ones added. I’ll be posting the past winners shortly where you will be able to see the changes. keggerz Posted January 25, 2006 Share Posted January 25, 2006 For those that missed the Skylive Thread: The skylive5 2005 Great Huddle Tour (Disclaimer: I apologize if I get someone's name wrong...or forget to add something that was in the Tour Thread....and I have decided not to use any graemlins/emoticons.) Back in January, my wife and I began making plans for a trip that would involve stopping in Chicago for a few days and meeting some Huddlers, continuing on to New Orleans for a week, then on to Vegas for a few days, and finishing up in Oceanside, CA to visit the oldest and his family before heading on back up the coast to home. This trip was to take place in May and we were to be in Chicago on the 22nd of May. As most everyone here at the Huddle knows, events transpired to prevent that trip. After much discussion with my two kids and brother-in-law, and knowing in my heart that it would not be good for me to just sit around the house and make bad decisions, it was agreed that maybe I should leave for awhile. Thought about it a bit and then decided that the skylive5 show should go on the road. Thus the Great Huddle Tour was conceived. The Tour had three main objectives. Meet Fusioneers and meet as many other Huddlers as I could. To prepare for this trip I went and bought a T-Mobile Internet card. This card would allow me to connect no matter where I happened to be as long as I had a signal. (I used my phone to see if I had a signal before turning on the laptop.) I also bought a new cell phone. I plug the card into the laptop and install the software and the thing connects. Use it the next day and it won't work at all. The laptop wasn't working correctly anyway, so I took it into a shop I use and told them to fix it and also make the card work. They fixed the laptop, they couldn't fix the card. So... I get home and call T-Mobile. An hour, and 4 people, later the guy gets it to connect. All is good and I close up the machine. This is the last time the card actually worked. I decide to leave town a day earlier than posted to go visit my brother-in-law in Oregon. So I pack up the truck, head to the NEX to pickup a new digital camera, because mine is old, and head on out. Get to OR and give my old camera to my brother in law, get set to use the laptop, and nothing works. Start the actual tour the next day. 14 May. I head to The Dalles, OR to visit a very long time friend. He can't get the laptop to work either, and we can't find any T-Mobile places open. Finally we decide to go to the only place in town that is open, Staples, and try the card in one of their machines. It won't work. So... because my machine isn't set up for wi-fi, buy a new machine so I can at least connect when I stop each night at a wi-fi motel. Now have two laptops. Leave for Denver early in the AM, which is one of two destinations on the tour that requires an overnight stop prior to arriving, and I can tell you that Idaho has no clue about telling you where you are and what highway you are on. Spent the night in WY. When I got up there was a good inch or so of snow all over, it was still snowing, and the wind was blowing at about 15 knots. Was a bit worried as I had not prepared my truck for winter weather, but a 100 miles or so down the road it became May again. Got to Denver a bit early and while waiting on Rhino to get off work I kicked back in a park not too far from his place of business. Nice peaceful day. Let me tell you... I highly recommend talking Rhino into letting you eat at his house. His wife puts on a spread that won't quit. I was embarrassed that I couldn't eat everything on my plate... bad example for their great kids. After the meal Rhino gave me the football.... just a fantastic idea. Even better than just taking pictures that's for sure. Spent the night in a hotel in Denver (Rhino doesn't live in Denver, he lives 40 miles away... and I was soon to find out that NO ONE lives where they say they do!) My second day in Denver was used to track down a T-Mobile place and coordinate that nights meeting with the Denver Huddlers. Oh, and I hate laptop keyboards so I needed to find a place to buy a keyboard for the new laptop since it has no serial ports and I can't use the one I brought with me. Found the T-M place and after much phone BS and so forth I ended up with a new card that worked like they told me it would in the beginning. I also found a Staples and bought a USB keyboard. Bier and I spent a lot of time on the phone.... he is a trip.... first he was going to meet me after he got his tires changed... they didn't have his tires so he had to come into Denver to get them and after much talking about it decided that he would follow me to KC. Then it was decided that instead of two cars... he could ride with me and fly back. So that is what we did. Made arrangements for him to fly back after two days in KC, made arrangements for his car to stay at the tire place, made arrangements for him to stay in my hotel room overnight, made arrangements to meet all the Huddlers that were in town. Bier and I got to the meeting place (a pretty nice bar) in downtown Denver a bit early. Which lead to my worst moment of the whole tour. (Bier kept telling me I should get something to eat... but after the meal at Rhino's there was no way I was hungry.) Anyways, I stay and drink while Bier used my truck to go pick up Rhino. Everyone started showing up and we had a back room all to ourselves. Thews40, his great girlfriend, Bier, Atomic, Rhino, and myself. Denver set the parameters which would hold true for all the Huddlers I would meet on this tour. Great talk, great stories, and great people. Think that everyone had a good time... I sure did. The mistake I made was drinking the shot of 18 year old Glenlivet after ordering one for everyone at the table. Probably not my best decision of the year. Sure went down smooth though. Suffice it to say that when we left I was not at my best. A mistake that I was not about to repeat for the rest of the tour. (I will say though that it was something that I needed to do and in the long run worked out well for me mentally.) Did I mention that the USB keyboard that Staples sold me was a serial port keyboard instead? So now I have two keyboards that don't work on the new machine. Holding true to form, Bier and I left very early for KC the next morning. I DO NOT recommend the drive from Denver to KC be made alone. Was very glad that Bier was along because that is one boring drive. We were supposed to get to KC in time to go to the 1PM ballgame, but I forgot about the hour change in time, we didn't make good time, and when it was all said and done we were two hours later than I expected to be. So Muck, the coordinator for KC, got us directions to a hotel next to where he works and we headed there. Got settled in and found out I had lost my camera in Denver. So we went out and I got a new camera. PO'd me that I had lost the pictures from Denver and Rhino's house. Because I carry my phone charger in my camera case...... we also had to track down a charger. *sigh* All very time consuming and frustrating. Plus I still needed a keyboard. Muck picked us up at the hotel and after a couple wrong turns got us to the restaraunt where his wife and two kids, and Chief Dick and his wife, were waiting. Private room even... it was great. With apologies to everyone there...the one I most enjoyed talking with was CD's wife. Not that the conversation with everyone else wasn't great.... it's just that for some reason radiant pregnant ladies are more interesting to talk to. The meal was, again, much too much, and great. I was starting to worry that I wouldn't be able to keep my weight gain on this trip below 20lbs. After the meal the ladies and kids branched off home and we (Muck, CD, Bier, and myself) got into Mucks vehicle and headed out for some sightseeing and beers. All of the rest of that night is well documented elsewhere on the Huddle and I won't detail it here.... suffice it to say, I am in a new FFL. Four hours from conception to completion. I defy anyone to form a league and draft faster than that. The next day we went to lunch with Muck and CD. (I can say, now that the tour is over, I really hate BBQ. Sauce more than anything I guess.) The point of the lunch was to take me out for some famous KC BBQ so we went to Gates(?). Probably some of the best BBQ I have ever been forced to eat. Hardly any sauce and nice and tender. I was very impressed let me tell you. Even took a doggy bag because there was no way to eat it all in one sitting. (We, of course, left the darn bags in Mucks vehicle when he drove off.) Starting to change my mind about BBQ. CD and Muck were great and again there were great stories and talk. The KC contingent did themselves up just fine. Bier didn't have to get up until 0530 and I knew I would be leaving around 0130-0200 so I packed everything up and took it to the truck so I wouldn't wake him when I left. As we are arranging things for me to take off.... Bier says... isn't that a camera? So now I have two laptops, two phone chargers, two cameras, and three keyboards. *sigh* Off to Chicago. Holding true to form.... I don't go to Chicago. I go to some place 40 miles away called Winfield. But let me tell you... well worth it. Was welcomed with open arms by two great people... rockn' and his wife. If you are ever in the area I highly recommend meeting them both. (The dog is a little trippy though.... one of the weirdest dogs I have ever met to be sure.) Was able to settle in and have some great conversation with rockn' until it was time for wiegie and his wife to arrive so we could go out for dinner. Now I have always had this picture in my mind about professors. They are supposed to be in their late 40's, with some grey in the hair, wise looking, and over 6 foot tall. Knew that wiegie wasn't in his 40's, but gee whiz... I thought he would be taller. And I mean no offense wiegie, but looking 19 doesn't instill a lot of confidence. (Sorry but you DO look young.) However, meeting a Huddle legend and his wife was something to savor and I was not going to let his height get in the way. Went to a very interesting restaurant where we had a very good meal and some of the best dinner conversation of the tour. Was a very good evening. In fact, it was a very good day all around. Today is Sunday.... May 22nd. The day of the Chicago BBQ. Except we don't have BBQ. (Insert laughter here.) Mrs. rockn' set a mean party table. She is a person after my own heart when it comes to preparing for a group of people. (The Emerald City and Slugs FFL people can tell you what I mean.) She spent all morning cooking, cutting, chopping, and just generally setting up a spread that had so much food the rr's were probably still eating party stuff for a week. At the party were, Wiegie and his wife, Chavez and his wife, LosG and his girlfriend (also a Huddler), rockn' and his wife of course, and Gilthorp. Talk about a diverse group of people. Don't really know where to start.... Guess I will start with rockn's mom. What a great and interesting lady. Funny as sin too. I liked her alot! And I think everyone else did too. LosG is no different in person than he is on the Huddle. He is all about FF and even tried to work in a trade while we were talking. However, he does have a secret life -- he works for a living. Bet no one guessed that he had something besides his 21 FFL's. Chavez is great... as is his new wife. He was exact to a T in what I expected. I am most happy when things turn out that way. Like wiegie he drove a long time to get to the party and he had to turn around and drive back after only a few hours. Was really disappointed that we didn't get to talk more, but I will be seeing him and the wife again next year. Will make up for it then. Gilthorp. He was the last to arrive and when he walked in he looked po'd and not in a very good mood at all. Plus he was a lot taller than I expected. I thought to myself, uh oh, here is the first Huddler I am going to meet that I am not going to get along with. How first glances are so wrong! What a great guy to talk with. Once he got out what he was mad about and that was over with he was excellent company. And anyway, how can one not get along with a fellow music lover? It was an excellent day where just about every topic was touched upon. We solved a lot of the worlds problems and the NFL should pay attention to some of the things we said. The only drawback to the day was that there just was not enough time in the evening to discuss as much music as we wanted to. But hey, you can't have everything I guess. The Chicago Huddle gathering was the biggest of the tour. Six Huddlers at once. I will be stopping again next year and I hear that rockn' won't charge me one more cent than he did this year. (Insert lots of laughter.) On the serious side though.... I could get used to the manner in which Mrs. rockn' treated me. She is one heck of a hostess believe you me! Left really early (as usual) and on my way to Columbus. For those of you not in the know, the trip was scheduled by starting in Columbus and working back from there to figure when I would start the tour and forward from there for the rest of the tour. Had to be in Columbus on a certain day for things to work out there. This was the one stop in which all others revolved around. Right off the bat I am a bit surprised... Steel Bunz actually lives where she says she does. Other than that there are no more surprises. Everything is exactly like I expected. Directions given work out just fine and I arrive to a great welcoming. Everything is perfect and I feel myself relax more than I have in a couple of years. I highly recommend a consultation with Steel Bunz for anyone with something heavy on their mind. I almost stopped the tour right there. If commitments hadn't already been made I would have. I'd still be there! I'll sum up the visit with... she is a great hostess, cook, and has a great husband who is very interesting to talk with. Other than that.... thank you Jules for everything and you will never know how much you helped. Above and beyond kid, above and beyond. I will see you next year even if I don't see anyone else! The tour continues. I leave very early for a lunch stop in Pittsburgh with Skippy and Squeegie before I continue on to Philadelphia. About halfway there I look at my watch to see what kind of time I am making and ..... no watch. It is on the chest of drawers in the room upstairs at SB's. Can't believe it. So I call her and tell her I left my watch there. The watch has sentimental attachments.... she says she will either bring it herself or mail it to Spain in Nashville. (As it turned out she had to mail it.... too much work to do to drive down. -frown-) Met with Skippy in downtown Pitt. That place sure has changed in the last 30 years. Skippy is one big boy. But then, football linemen usually are I guess. He took me on a great tour of Pitt and area and I got a spectacular view, and pictures, overlooking the whole city. If you visit him make sure he takes you there. We spent some time coordinating with squeegie over the phone and finally got things finalized for lunch. We are to pick her up after court and head to this 'storied' sandwich place. As we approach the area things get a little tense in the vehicle. (Sorry squeeg, not knowing what to expect both of us were a little on edge about meeting you what with your persona at the Huddle and all.) Won't go into all the details of picking her up and stuff... but squeegie is okay. Nice person all the way around and gives great conversation. (Both regular and football.) Had a good time. I was sorry to have lunch end and have to take squeeg back to work. I wouldn't mind stopping in Pitt again. (The sandwich place turned out to be okay... don't think I have ever had a sandwich quite like that before.) Skip and I say some quick goodbyes and I am off to Philly. About two hours onto the turnpike I get a phone call. It's Skippy. I left the football in his vehicle! Good thing no one was in the truck with me... my rep as a nice guy would have taken a drastic hit. I give him the address of the hotel I am staying at in Philly and he say he will fed-ex it to arrive before meeting anyone. I don't have much confidence that it will after reading stories the last couple of days in the Tailgate about fed-ex and ups. But I thank him anyway and tell him I will remember this. Initially I was going to stop in Carlisle for a few days to visit relatives. But the closer I got the more I didn't want to do it. So I drove right on by and stayed the night close to Philly. Emailed the relatives and said I would talk to them later and see them next year. (It's a long story and you don't want to hear it anyway.) Because I didn't stop in Carlisle I get to Philly a day early. Not as early as I expected though, because YOU CAN'T GET THERE FROM HERE! What a tough place to get to. Signs are of no help, and everyone I stopped and asked directions from had no idea what the heck I was talking about. Don't ever ask anyone where 'downtown' is.... they don't know the terminology. You want 'City Center'. *sigh* Anyways, I spend the night in the Westin because there is a NCAA Lacrosse tournament going on and no rooms left in the hotel where Rovers has a reservation for the next day. Felt like I bought a small country after paying the bill the next morning. The Philly group had plans on meeting at 11 in the bar at our hotel. The bar doesn't open until 1. So I hang out around the door, finally talk someone into letting me sit in the bar and wait (plus I could smoke while waiting). Every once in awhile someone would come up to the locked door, see that it was closed, and walk away. I have my Huddle hat prominently displayed so any Huddler walking up could see it and let me know they were there. At the appointed time a couple guys walk up, try the door, I tell them it is closed, and they walk away. (Can't believe that I completely missed the fact that the biker looking guy was NSab!) I wait some more and then decide to go out and stand right at the door. These same two guys walk up still looking confused, and then... bang.... one of them sees the hat on my head and actually reads what is on it. (Much laughter by all.) It is NSab and, lo and behold, Dragon! NSabs brother won't be making it because he is with his wife in the hospital as the baby is due any second. (We spend much of the day getting reports via cell, but no baby that day.) We hang for a bit and then decide that we might as well head out to get a drink. We know that Rovers has cell phone numbers to call so we can give him directions to where we will be. We go out, cross the street, and about a third of the way down the block.... a Rovers sighting! Well, actually a shirt sighting with a Rovers inside of it. Off we go to this great Irish pub. (My memory isn't all that is should be... so this will most likely have errors....) I was supposed to meet nogohawk in Carlisle but that didn't work out. However, he does show up in Philly with his wife. DKF came down from Syracuse. A totally unexpected, and very happy, event. Everything was coordinated via cell and we all end up in the pub. It is decided that we have to do Philly Cheesestake so off we go on what turns out to be an adventure in itself just finding a place. The sandwiches themselves were a disappointment for everyone... but that does not take away from the day. We all go back to the bar and commence to do what this tour is all about.... great stories, conversation, and holding up the great Huddle tradition of solving world problems. Nogohawk, and his wife of course, Dragon, and DKF, all have to leave early. Just too many miles to put in to stay longer. (Hugh frown.) But it was a great day with excellent and interesting company and I got to meet another wife. (It was great to meet so many wives. Now they know that we don't all have two heads and/or all look like serial killers.) After all the normal people leave it's just NSab, Rovers, and myself. (There is a joke there somewhere.) We decide that it would be best to have some dinner. So off we go in search of something to eat at a nice place. After NSab walks our feet off we finally end up at Mortons. I don't think it is possible to say anything bad about Mortons. Absolutely fabulous meal and service. Well worth the price for sure. And the company/conversation wasn't bad either. It was a shame to have to end the evening. After saying goodbye to NSab, a great coordinator by the way, Rovers and I head on up to the room he reserved. I am all packed and ready to go and hoping that I don't wake him up when I leave. (I do though.) Did I mention that the football was at the hotel just when Skippy said it would be? Well it was and Skippy.... thank you very much. Not one Huddler that I met failed to get to sign it. Philly was great with just excellent Huddlers. Well, NSab was the only Philly person.... but you all know what I mean. (Don, a special thanks.... totally unexpected and a great pleasure.) Off to Charlottesville. My sister-in-law lives there. Out in the boondocks away from everything unfortunately. No cell, no Internet, practically no nothing. Was supposed to meet a couple Huddlers for a party at her house (you could throw a party for 100 and still have massive room) but things didn't work out. Would have been nice to at least got an email about not coming though.... most disappointing part of the tour as far as Huddlers went. But it was all iffy to begin with... so not that bad. Though I must admit that Keg using the tired old excuse of getting married to beg off was a bit hard to take. (That's a joke Keg!) After this break.... the tour continues.... Next stop.... Nashville. I have been looking forward to this stop for a long time. It is supposed to have everything a good Huddler needs. Music, food, livestock.... etc. What a disappointment. No trailer. No barn. No livestock! This was supposed to be Tennessee for cryin' out loud! Oh, well. Guess one has to continue to put up with excellent wives who continue the great food and hospitality tradition and call it even. Spain left no stone unturned. Great sightseeing, excellent choices for food, super conversation, and really great kids. We even went and played some poker at a party some of his friends were having. Oh, and we were also involved in drafting rookies for Fusion. Personally, I would like to see next years draft held at his place if we can't do Vegas. Plenty of room for sure. (On the second day my watch shows up just like Bunz said it would. Thank you Jules!) Jeff, you have a great and understanding wife... a keeper for sure! I had a great time and felt most welcome. Be sure and thank her for me again. Oh, and need to mention that while I was in Philly I stopped and picked up a watch. So now I have: two laptops, two phone chargers, two cameras, three keyboards, and two watches. *sigh* On to Atlanta. In the end, things did not go well for Huddlers here. Oh, I had a good time, and the stay at Big John's was great, as was meeting lkirc and Atlanta Cracker, but I hate it when bad things happen. Big Score1 had a family emergency that precluded him being able to show up and then we get a call from West Virginia... he was broadsided on the way to see us and his vehicle was totaled. At least he wasn't injured thank the Lord. Haven't heard much since then but I hope both are all okay and that everything has settled down. Meeting Big John was fun. I should have the memory he has. He was a great host and coordinator. lkirc... you work too hard. But what a great landscape job! Both lkirc and Big John helped me get to Harolds so I could pick up some t-shirts that I was ordered to get. Harolds has completed the job started in KC. There really is some good BBQ out there. You just have to know someone that can get you to the right place I guess. I wasn't going to say any of this....but I can't help myself. Trey, you are a good friend. Always have been. It was great to finally meet you face to face. Emails, PM's, and the phone are okay....but it is even better to meet. I want to thank you, where everyone can see it, for the last several years. Next time we will coordinate better and I get to meet the family...right? Atlanta kept up the Huddle Tour Tradition of great conversation, food, and Huddlers. Big John, you did okay! Had a great time. Now the tour starts to take some turns. Was supposed to stop in Montgomery for lunch with my daughters new husbands family and then head on in to New Orleans. However, rajn' can't make it to NO, so I change things and head direct to Biloxi, no stop in Montgomery. Stayed at the Beau Rivage Casino/Hotel in Biloxi. Plush place. Coordinate with rajn', he takes the afternoon off and we meet at the hotel. *sigh* Why does everyone have to look so much younger than they are? (Laugh) We have a drink or so at the hotel and then head out to one of his favorite places to eat. Now I too know why it is a favorite. We then did some sightseeing.... I hope that most of it is still standing after this hurricane season is over. (Frown) You just can't beat the South for beautiful homes. So while this stop was not on the original tour sked... and the time spent with rajn' was way, way, too short, it was well worth the stop in more ways than one. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Hope all is going well rajn'. New Orleans. Whew... what can one say? Interesting place to be sure. Tbimm had me stay at his place and as has been the norm for this tour, he was a great host. Took me to all the places I 'needed' to go for food.... showed me a lot.... and was a good coordinator. Taking the time off from work was above and beyond the call though. Not my intention to have people lose work time. But I want to thank you anyway.... it was a great time. We did all the stuff you are supposed to do and if you take a cab you can do even more. (Laugh) Got my fix for zydeco with a great house band that no one will ever hear of. (A shame... they were pretty darn good.) However, off-season isn't all that great for other acts. I was not disappointed though. New Orleans is a good time. On the second day SuperBalla and his wife came down from Baton Rouge. Their anniversary was the next day.... she is a very understanding person. In fact, she was great! Had some excellent conversation with her and she gets right into it when it comes to FF people. Knew a lot of the names.... We tried several places for food, even went in one... Felix's, where nothing on the menu that we ordered was available....ended up across the street at Mike Andersons. Excellent meal. Had everything we wanted including the oysters. We then ended up at the zydeco bar. When we got there the band was on a break so we even got to have stories, talk, and the usual Huddle saving the world from itself. All in all I think it was a great evening. I sure had a good time.... and I think everyone else did too. Tbimm did a great job.... and I will be calling him when I have to go through NO again next year. Hopefully I did okay and he will invite me back. Dallas. The hated rival, the hated town. If it weren't for the Huddlers here I would have driven around. (Laugh) Club directed me to a place and after taking the afternoon off he met me and had me follow to his house. Once again the tradition of great hospitality was upheld. Nothing was happening until the next day.... so we just kicked back and shot the bull leaving no stone unturned. Wife knows a lot about music to say the least. Let me say a few things about going to the horse races. I am usually pretty good at picking a winner. Not as good as my wife was, but still ended up leaving with more than I came with. The day started pretty good when I hit a trifecta with the first race. However, for some reason, it was all down hill from there and I ended up losing about 100. Not sure why that happened. I did have the 2nd horse in the Belmont across the board though. What can I say about the Dallas Huddlers? DMD, Blitz, Sarge, Club, and Perch, are all so different from each other, yet so much the same, it was scary. Perch drove farther than anyone I believe. It was appreciated, and unlike everyone else, he is not at all what I expected. I could hang with him, though I am not sure he would want to hang with me. (Laugh) I am glad everyone could make it... some great conversation and insight given. Have talked with Sarge on the phone over the last couple of years so thought I knew what to expect... however, he is even better face to face. People don't know what they are missing by not meeting him when they are in the Dallas area. And he has one big thing in common with Blitz. Very family oriented. Which is great in my book. Blitz... the man, the legend, the myth. It was an absolute pleasure! And I still think you should have given that guy your autograph. (Lots of laughter.) I think everyone enjoyed the horse races. At least everyone left in a pretty good mood as we headed out to find someplace close by to eat. Perch (I believe) had GPS in his vehicle and after much searching we found a place to eat that wasn't forever away. No waiting, though the stupid seater sat us in the wrong area. However, even that worked out for the best in the long run as DMD continuously tried to get the waitress to give him the check. He didn't know that I had already told her, when I had to leave the table to go get a smoke, that I was the only one she was to give the check to and that it was really important that she do so and that I am a very generous person. (This is something I had done at each stop.... was not going to allow Dallas to ruin it.) Now, while DMD is a very intimidating person... and a persistent one too, she knew in her heart where her biggest tip was going to come from...... I got the check. Club did a great job of coordinating. He did Dallas up proud. All the parameters set at the start of the tour in Denver were met..... great conversation, great stories, great food. It was a pleasure meeting the legends, the co-owner, and Perch (who I am certain will be a legend in the future). I was supposed to leave early Monday morning for Vegas. It is a two day drive. However, I was invited to view the Huddle HQ and there is no chance in the world one turns that down. So instead of heading off to Vegas... I head up to McKinley to see the Huddle HQ and visit with a true gentleman and scholar. It was well worth the stop believe you me. I highly recommend it as a 'must see' for all Huddlers. The conversation was even better though. I could have spent the next year just listening. Got to see the man at work.... the reasoning behind things.... even got an advance look at the rankings (I definitely look at the rankings different now)... and just walking into the room was an education in and of itself. (We even had time for a Burleson/Porter discussion.) (Laugh) We then went to lunch at a heckofa place and the quality of conversation just escalated! (Not to mention that the food was outstanding.) The time spent with DMD was complete quality and I would have been an idiot not to have cut a day off from Vegas to spend it with him when he invited me up. Thanks for taking time David.... it was a keeper highlight for sure. It is a very long and boring drive from Dallas to Vegas. Very long. However, I do start early so I didn't have traffic problems and got into Vegas by 1030AM on the second day from Dallas. Coordinated with my obsession for the next day and then hit Vegas. Vegas is Vegas... no need to go into details. Win some, lose some....and then along comes my obsession. Just in case I forget to say it.... thanks guy. The education on slot machines was both enlightening and profitable. What can one say about a host that puts lots of money in your pocket? (Laugh) I left Vegas with the same amount of money I started the tour with. One cannot say very often that one leaves Vegas in the black. Will be interesting to see if I can use Sore's way of playing to my advantage when I go back in September. If I do I will never play anything else again. I had planned on staying longer in Vegas.... but it just isn't the same alone.... so I head out to Oceanside a day earlier than planned. Besides, want to be rested up for the SoCal Huddler meet. The problem with California is that everything is so far away. I could only have one meeting and SoCal was it. I would have liked to have had a tour stop in San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. That way I think I could have got everyone in. But, alas, only San Diego area was going to be it this time around. And because of that a lot of CA Huddlers couldn't make it. BUT... those that did make it did not shirk in their duties of holding up the high traditions set by those who were met before them. Big Country, darin3, Chargerz, and Slugfear all where there. Big Country... the very first Huddler. And he is big. (Laugh) We all met at a sports bar in Oceanside. Not a bad place. And we would have stayed there except that on Sat nights they have some kind of DJ that plays really loud and obnoxious music. I am sure he has no concept of what good music is. But anyway, I digress. Everyone had food and drinks.... and the conversation was excellent until the new CA league was brought up. (Laugh) Slugfear was even invited to be a member and he was looking forward to it.... but real life work ended up interfering and he had to say no later. Very interesting Huddlers. Very different from each other. It was fun. And while the time spent was short, the SoCal Huddlers are an excellent group. Shame that Oceans Eleven turned out to be such a sucky 'casino'. All the darn thing is is a cardroom. Not a very good one at that. But we had a good time overall I think. Just wish it had been more of it. Did have time to make arrangements for darin and BC to come to Vegas in Sept though. my obsession.... we will be staying at the same place I stayed at will call ya. No more Huddlers to meet until Sept. The rest of my time in Oceanside was spent with family. My daughter and her family arrived on the 2nd of July from up here. (She lives next door unless anyone forgot that.) I had to leave earlier than planned again... left the 4th and arrived home on the 5th. Could have made it home on the 4th but 13 hours of driving has pretty much become my limit. However, it was a long tour and so much that was funny at the time is still funny but hard to describe. I am most impressed with Huddlers. Did not meet one person that couldn't hold up their end of a conversation and that didn't have a great Huddle related story to tell. Everyone was great and made me feel welcome. And the good Lord knows that a 5'5", balding, old guy, that is overweight and wears glasses, is hard to welcome. LOL The tour did what it was supposed to do for the most part. Thanks to Jules for that. I am already looking forward to next year and meeting even more Huddlers as well as re-visiting those on the way.
