Taylor faces 46 years on assault charges

NFL.com wire reports

MIAMI (Jan. 27, 2006) -- Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor faces up to 46 years in prison after two additional assault charges were filed against him.

Michael Grieco, an assistant state attorney, said the charges reflect Taylor's alleged threatening of three people with a gun in an armed confrontation over an all-terrain vehicle on June 1.

Taylor, 22, now faces three counts of aggravated assault, each of which carries a minimum sentence of three years and a maximum of 15 years in prison. He also faces one misdemeanor battery charge that carries a potential one-year prison term.

Trial is scheduled to begin March 20 for Taylor, a former University of Miami star who signed a seven-year contract after being drafted by the Redskins in 2004. He has six interceptions and 120 tackles in his two seasons.

Taylor's attorney, Edward Carhart, said the additional charges surprised him.

"The state has had this case since June and now they're filing these added charges? It's bizarre," Carhart said.

Taylor has pleaded not guilty and remains free on $16,500 bond.

The Redskins lost to the Seattle Seahawks two weeks ago in the NFC playoffs. In a playoff victory against Tampa Bay, Taylor was ejected after spitting in the face of Buccaneers running back Michael Pittman. Earlier in that game, he ran a fumble back for a touchdown.

Did he really assualt anyone, or did he just point a gun at them and say give me back my Escalade? If he assualted someone, then I hope the fatherless male gets altleast 10 years by then he will be to old to play against the Cowboys. If he just pointed a gun at them and said give me back my Escalade, then nothing should happen to him, as much as I hate to say it.

Agreed. If I had a dollar for every time I pointed a gun at someone during a dispute... Totally rational response on ST's part. He should walk.

Ha....good stuff. Florida is really trying to crack down on the gun laws from what I gather and they is why the penalties are so severe for drawing a gun on someone. Of course, he's an NFL star so he'll find a way around service actual jail time most likely.

Up here all you have to do is show the gun.... goodbye freedom-hello jail. Pointing it isn't even taken into consideration.

It is a fact of life that sooner or later someone has to be used as an example. I see him doing time. Probably 15 with time off.

So you're saying I shouldn't draft him in my dynasty league?

Maybe his lawyer can get it postponed since he's an NFL player and all.  :D

His lawyer already did get it postponed because he's an NFL player. He originally was set for a trial date before the 2005 season started.

Two extra charges have been added to the below linked article from June:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...5062400535.html

With three felony charges now... plus the misdemeanor charge... figure he will get somewhere around 15.

The reasoning behind my prediction is that there have been so many cases involving sports figures, and so many getting away with it, (like bryant) that they will make an example of Taylor. Won't give him max, but will give him in the middle somewhere... probably 15.

You pays your quarter, you takes your chances. :D

You have a spot.... what the heck.... but I wouldn't count on him ever being drafted by me now. :D

Sorry, but that might might be the most inexplicable point of view I've read on the Huddle since Ugly Tuna went away.

You been hanging out on the Iverson/MarcusVick planet tooooooo much. Time to come back to our civilized world where point guns at people is a criminal offense, regardless of who you are!!

Iverson has actually matured a lot in the last couple years.

For as many times as I've been ripped off, I've never been able to find the guys that did it. Nor has the police for that matter. He found the people that stole his vehicles. Maybe he shouldn't go to jail, they should make him a cop. :D

He didn't do anything wrong. Found the criminals that stole his vehicles and detained them until the cops got there. because there were more than one, he needed a gun. Sounds perfectly logical. Justice was served. :D
