Million Dollar in total or per year?

I know Nolan Ryan was the first million dollar baseball player (signed with the Astros in 1980 or 81).  The first million dollar football player shouldnt be too far behind....

In 1965 Joe Namath signed a $437,000 per year contract which was HUGH at the time.

In 1978 OJ Simpson becomes the highest paid player earning $733,985 for that year, mopre than double the next closest player (Namath).

Nolan Ryan was the 1st million dollar player in 1979.

Still looking for the 1st million dollar NFL player. I got my info fromn this source which is pretty cool . . .

For some reason I can google up the first million dollar player in about any other sport besides the NFL. Like Asian PGA, surfing, etc. - but no NFL. I would suspect it happened in the early 80's.

down the page a bit.

"Football was no different. The Denver Broncos' John Elway was paid $1.96 million in 1988."

At least we know that we can work back from 1988. :D

I found this about Johnny "Lam" Jones, who was drafted by the Jets in 1980 when I did a search. I'm not sure if they mean that his contract was for a million total or per year.

Jones, two-time All-American wide receiver and first-ever professional football player to sign a million-dollar contract, was considered "without a doubt the single fastest man of his time" by the University's Assistant Athletic Director Bill Little.

I also found another article that said he was a major bust.

2.1 Million over 6 years

Signed as the first player ever to get a million dollar contract in the NFL (he signed for $2.1 million over six years), he was an instant celebrity in The City that Never Sleeps. And neither did Johnny.

In 1984 Herschel Walker signed with the USFL for 3 years at 5 million

Donald Trump, the owner of the Generals, will announce at a news conference at Giants Stadium today a three-year extension of Herschel Walker's contract. Under the extension, reported to be worth $5 million, Walker will remain with the team through the 1988 season, with his annual salary raised to $1.6 million.

and Walkers Contract came after:

Trump said the sum involved was ''comparable'' to those in two other multimillion-dollar contracts that players have signed with United States Football League teams in the last week: the $6 million that the New Orleans Breakers are reported to be paying Marcus Dupree for five years, and the $5.5 million that is estimated to be the present value of the four- year contract that will give Steve Young of the Los Angeles Express more than $40 million over the next 43 years.

As a side note, he was diagnosed with a rare form of Bone Cancer last year. I seemed to have turned his life around from the drug and alcohol, but no money left, and no medical insurance.

Marcus Dupree. Wow! I believe this is the first mention of him on these boards since I brought him up! LOVED HIM! Great story...kind of a rural Lloyd Daniels without the gunshots.
