Lions: Martz added to the staff

The News

The Lions got a new offensive coordinator on Wednesday. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that former Rams head coach Mike Martz has agreed to fill that post under new head coach Rod Marinelli.

Our View

Martz made fantasy stars out of many pieces of the Rams' offense during his time in St. Louis and there's certainly enough talent in Motown for his to repeat his success. However, the trick will be getting the skill position players to perform up to their potential, which has proven to be a very difficult task.

I can't find any other sources backing this up, anyone else confirm anything?

Every year the Lions find some way to make their fans think that this year will be different. And every year the same thing happens, anywhere between a 3-13 and a 6-10 season. Let us hope that Martz is the offensive savior that we have been waiting for, even though we all know that he cannot do it himself!

Lions fans--remember that under Mike Martz, Az Hakim was a good receiver when he was in St. Louis. If I were you, I would be optimistic. (And as someone who gets stuck watching the Lions play every week, I am happy as they should be a lot more interesting this year.)

Even if their record doesn't improve, this should bode well fantasy wise for their recievers, no?  (That is, assuming they can find a QB in the offseason)

As far as QBs are concerned, look at what Martz did with arguably inferior talent at QB (Bulger, Green, Warner).

Here is a great passage from Brian Burwell, a columnist in St. Louis.:

So Martz needs to find someplace to rehabilitate his damaged reputation, and I can't think of a better place than with the sorry, no-account Lions. For the record, look at his resume of offensive development. He knows how to turn offenses around. He knows how to spot and groom offensive skill players, particularly quarterbacks. He was the one who convinced Dick Vermeil that Tony Banks was not the man to lead the Rams to the playoffs. He was the man who took an unknown third-string quarterback out of Northern Iowa (Kurt Warner) and turned him into one of the most prolific passers in NFL history. He's the one who identified a sixth-year backup out of Indiana with only one NFL pass to his credit (Trent Green) and sent him on his path toward the Pro Bowl. He's the same guy who took another faceless free-agent backup who had bounced around the fringes of the NFL (Marc Bulger) and turned him into a Pro Bowl MVP.

If I were Harrington, I would be a very happy guy today.

:D

Here is a :D to the article.

I don't see what all of the excotement is about: who's going to play QB for him?

Is Warner a free agent? If not who out there could sign and do well under a new system? McCown? Or does anyone think Harrington is still the answer?

How about a trade for Rivers? :D

I don't know the answer to this question but my thought is that he would definately look at a FA or even a trade to get a guy he wants and I believe that a FA QB or someone looking to be traded would love to come to Detroit and work under Martz in a controlled environment (Ford Field) with what potentially could be some nice skill players. Potential being the key word there of course.

Wow. Think about this: of all the names who might end up being the Lions QB next year (Harrington, Warner, Rivers, Pennington, etc.), don't you think ANY of them will automatically become a top-5 fantasy QB in this year's drafts?

Here's my QB rankings off the top of my head...

1. Manning

2. Palmer

3. Brady

4. McNabb

5. .....? Bulger? T. Green? Hasselbeck? DETROIT QB? :D

Interesting.

Who was Harringtons backup when Garcia went down? If I recall he is a big athletic kid. Being a Rams fan this is a good thing for Detroit. Martz in the booth is lethal. Martz on the sideline is stupidity. He needs to see the whole field in front of him. People in St. Louis have been saying this for years. He is not a sideline coach.

Either way, he'll find some unknown kid to buy into his philosophy and turn them into a great QB for a couple of years till his 5-7 step drop system gets the poor boy gets hurt ie Warner's thumb and Bulgers shoulder. That's the only thing about Martz's offense, it gets Qb's hurt after a couple of years.

I think that Pollard and Roy Williams are already established skill players. The others are question marks. And I agree that DET would be a good fit for a veteran QB.

I think Martz is a better OC than coach. I think it is a very good move. If he can't get the offensive talent on that team to perform, it's time to give up. I am excited for Detroit's fantasy potential again. Unfortunately, I was last year too. :doah:

Those were the two I was thinking of and I still would throw Jones into the mix although I doubt many would at this point.
