The NFL and its Super Bowl

Isn’t the SUPER BOWL supposed to be the NFL’s crowning achievement… The pinnacle of professional sport… The entertainment spectacle of the year?

And we got that mess?!?!

I admit to not watching every minute of the multi-hour telecast, but I did listen in on some of the pregame show, and watched most of the game itself… Oh yeah, and suffered through the half-time histrionics.

And I wish I had all of that time back.... what a waste.

The one thing last night’s debacle showed for all to see is that the NFL has become the home for:

1. Mediocre entertainment in an overly slick package

2. Fabulous athletes, but terrible fundamentals

3. Coaches with huge egos, and absolutely no idea how to manage a game

4. Inconsistent officiating by overwhelmed part-timers

One would think after doing this 39 previous times, the product would be getting better. After watching last night’s I honestly believe it is getting worse.

I dont pay any attention to the halftime show or hoopla surrounding the game at all. If the game is good the superbowl is good..Pats / Panthers was one of the best ive ever seen and I couldnt tell you anything about all the surrounding antics

Yep. Thank God for fantasy football. For the NFL, much like in life THE JOURNEY is what it is all about.

I will lower my expectations for the Superbowl in the future, so I won't be so disappointed.

My bad.

I abadoned the notion of having a favorite NFL team over 10 years ago, on the outset of my FF career. It really seems pointless to put all your faith in one team, when you can rest it in all 32 with a 20 man roster. When my player gets hosed on a call, i've got 9 others not affiliated with that play to rely on, what did Seattle homers have to rest on last night?

Jeramy Steven's crank.... he only stepped on it 4 or 5 times.

Good post BR. Maybe I'm just getting jaded but I get less and less excited about the Super Bowl each year (assuming I have no rooting interest). The Bullshucks to Good Stuff ratio seems to go up every year.

That's why I prefer Divisional Championship or Championship weekend. More games, less concentrated bullshucks. Yeah, the winner of the SB is much more significant but for a fan who likes to watch good football, it's better to see 4 or 2 games than one overhyped one.

Good point. Having multiple meaningful games to choose from is certainly preferable to the one BIG game. This is what makes the college football bowl season so enjoyable, and also the NCAA basketball tournament. Numerous games on which all mean something... and if one sucks or is a blowout you just change channels to another.
