“The thing that is really impressive when he was with the Rams was his ability to run the football.

Ok, there's posturing and appearances and such when starting over, but that's just flat out retarded and pretty insulting to football fans.

Wow, looks like Marinelli is a great judge of football talent; I can't wait for the NFL draft with football smarts like that. What's the over/under on the number of overrated WRs the Lions draft this year? 3? 4?

That's a true statement. Remember a guy named M. Faulk? I do, he led me to a fantasy championship one year. When Martz was an OC, he did run the ball effectively.

When Martz was last an OC (1999), Faulk ran for 1381/7 TD with 1048/5 TD via receptions. I believe he was the #1 fantasy RB in that year. That was his his only season as an OC for STL. He was the QB coach for WAS in 1997-1998.

He was the offensive coordinator at Arizona State from 1988-1991. His entire background in coaching has been either as a QB or WR coach, and then the two OC gigs prior to becoming a HC.

I think this is a good move by the Lions. Obviously Martz has been a great OC in the past, I think he's just a victim of Peter's Principle.

Just because he was pass-happy in the past doesn't mean he's going to do the same thing here. We have to give him credit for making the most out of the talent he's given, and hope he can do the same thing here. My only worry is that this might be a short-term thing for him, and midway through the rebuilding effort he'll move on to a head coaching job. Though there were a lot of positions open this year and no one gave him one....

Martz's craziness as a HS is stuff of legend. Heck even this courtship between him and Millen speaks as much about him as it does about Millen. These guys can't even work out a contract they both want to reach without looking like idiots.

But I do like this a lot and I really don't care how many style points they lost to get to this point. For all his flaws, nobody has had more recent success moving the chains and putting the ball in the endzone than Mike Martz.

Thankfully Martz isn't the HC. I don't know much about Marinelli, but I'm more than happy to take door number two. He recognizes what he doesn't know, which is offense, and went and got a guy with impecable offensive credentials. And being a new HC, taking on a former HC with a huge ego, someone that he's never worked with before. Well props.

I watched Millen and Moronweg take a bruising, power football team that was a late FG away from the postseason and try to play finess football with them the next year. Well after five years of sh*tty results, and with the framework in place for a finess team, we bring in a grind it out HC. I think Marinelli has the mentality of the defensive lineman he is and prefers that approach. But he shows real flexibility in hiring the king of finess as his OC. Especially since his team is more suited for that.

I admit, I get excited every offseason and then disappointed every year too. It's my burden as a Lions fan. I have to say I thought Marriucci was too conservative an approach with the offensive weapons he had. I don't have sufficient football knowledge to say if it was the system that was at fault or the players or what was going on. Really the best person availible this offseason to figure out how to put the puzzle pieces together may well be Martz.

SO I'm real happy with this hire, give Martz a chance to get his reputation back and let Marinelli focus more on what he know, defense while he learns HC skills with a proven OC to cover for his weaknesses.

All-in-all, thought the circumstances that got him to Detroit are strange, I don't think this can be a bad thing for the Lions. Martz bonehead reputation came about more for his inabilities as a Head Coach (Time management, player management, etc.), but as an Offensive coordinator, he was tremendous.

If I were any of the following, I would be :D

Lions Fans

Harrington owners, if such a thing exists

Roy Williams owners

Kevin Jones owners

I think thatthe whole thing had nothing to do with money. I think that Martz wanted some type of out clause in case a HC job opened up that he wanted. One thing you can't say about the Fords is that they are tight with their money.

In reference to your statement about Harrington, I do not believe that he will be the QB here. No matter what he does he has lost the fans support. He could throw 49 TD's in a row and on the next p[ass throw an INT and be booed horribly. I think for his sake he needs to move on.

Lastly, I do not care who they have here as OC or HC. Until they get an O-Line that can block it will be more of the same O'LL in D-Town.

Very solid points. It ALWAYS has to start with the guys up front, both offensively and defensively.
