Doc Holliday
What will become of him? 1316747 He will make a fine backup QB for someone IMO.

DMD
Brooks is under contract for 2006 (his contract is through 2007) so there is no immediate need to determine his status. Brooks obviously fell from favor late last year but some of that is the old "look like you are still trying" that coaches do (think Collins/Tuiasosopo). I have not heard anything that Payton is considering a new QB yet. I would not be shocked to see them keep Brooks this year and draft a QB to groom for 2007. The Saints have a whole new coaching staff and scheme and everything cannot change in year one. I am sure that keeping Brooks in a rebuilding year would be considered, at least I have heard nothing to the contrary.

It sounds like it would make more sense for him to be the opening day started for the Saints.
I Like Soup
It really is a shame...Brooks has great physical gifts and I've seen some of his games where he looks flat out brilliant. But...there are too many where he looks too much like I think he stays in New Orleans. Edited February 10, 2006 by I Like Soup
Big F'n Dave
I would not be shocked to see them keep Brooks this year... 1316824 I would. Brooks wore out his welcome with New Orleans fans two or three years ago. The Saints will trade him (probably for a third- or fourth-rounder), draft Leinart and throw him directly into the fray. But, like you said , new coaches and all they may have seen something in him they like.

Nothing we have heard in the offseason points to Brooks being the opening game starter in New Orleans. I personally would rather see a rookie who has half a brain than suffer through another year of Brooks inability to read defenses! Jackass
I really think it's time for some new blood. At the end of last year when he was benched, he pretty much told the organization to go to hell (not in so many words, but that was the gist). Even with the new coach i would be surprised if he stuck around. They're gonna suck next year regardless, and my guess is they bring in someone like Steve Deberg to groom Leinhart, most likely. Skrappy1
Maybe Detroit could use him...Martz is pretty good with QBs, no? Though he's clearly regressed the past couple of seasons, maybe a fresh start and some good coaching could straighten him out. He has shown a good amount of talent, regardless of some of the extremely poor decisions that he's made on the field.

With Leinart, the Saints will sell more tickets. With Brooks, they'll be struggling to half fill the dome.
DMD
I don't think anyone expects Brooks to hold a job there but it would be not surprising to see them keep him, draft a top QB and then let the rookie take over by mid-season or so. Not sure of the cap ramifications of keeping him or releasing him though.
rajncajn
He may suck, but he's still better than quite a few starting QBs in the league. If he can find a team who thinks they can develop him then I think he could be a starter next year. But I agree with BFD, the Saints will be Leinarts team next year. Leinart might squeeze out a few extra tickets, versus the same old same old of Brooks. Side note - this move back to NO seems a little ahead of itself to me, unless it's only going to be for one or two games.
Cordo
Brooks is under contract for 2006 (his contract is through 2007) so there is no immediate need to determine his status. I am sure that keeping Brooks in a rebuilding year would be considered, at least I have heard nothing to the contrary. 1316824 His base is $6.25M for 2006, not a terrible cap hit for a starter, but way too much to pay a backup. But that's the rub, what is Payton's philosophy regarding starting a rookie QB ? Let him start right away and learn on the field, or watch a veteran for a year ? Payton has specifically said that no decisions have been made about any players and that he and the coaches are just starting to look at film from this year (comments were made Tuesday night on local radio sports talk show). He's been directly asked about Brooks and Leinart numerous times and has effectively talked around the questions every time. One big strike against Brooks in regards to staying with the Saints were the comments he made about Benson late in the season. He was very critical of the owner and there are a number of people who think that he sealed his fate when the words came out of his mouth. Never a good idea to talk bad publicly about the guy who signs your checks. I'll throw out one other thing, take it for what it's worth. I don't spend alot of time there, but do go on a Saints message board now and then. There's one guy who's supposedly Devery Henderson's brother in law. To be honest, every post I've read from this guy has been pretty much right on the money. The other day, he said he had been talking with Henderson and Donte Stallworth, and they told this guy that Brooks is definitely gone. Not that they would necessarily know that for fact, but I found that interesting. Again, take FWIW.
