Does Brees go, Will the Rivers era in San Diego begin?

Reported in another forum, the latest news is that Brees has declined the Chargers lastest offer and is now set to become a free agent. Don't know how it came to this so quick.

I would'nt pass judgement on Rivers just yet, being an NC State alum and watching his 4 year career at State-give the kid a chance. He is a winner and will pick that offense up and fit right in. While at NC State, Norm Chow said Rivers had one of the best offensive minds he's been around, and he picked Norm's offense up very quickly his freshmen year.

Well, he could be solid out of the gate- but I would not count on it. At the very least he will be mediocre to bad for at least 1 year. Just seems like SD is too close to challenging for the AFC crown to have to go with an unproven QB. IF I was a SD fan I wouldn't like the short term effect of Rivers playing.

Too many cases of the steep learning curve as a young QB- plus Brees had a nice season- Rivers is a big step back IMO.

Here's a link to the latest news in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

There's a WHOLE LOTTA posturing going on right now. I wouldn't be surprised to see Brees actually becoming a free agent in the next two weeks or so. Then again, A.J. and Drew might kiss and make up before then. :D

:D ANYBODY WANT A VETERAN QB WHO'S REHABBING A TORN LABRUM!!

Thanks Chargerz, looks like your going to loose Brees. How confident is the staff in the ability of Rivers to step in? He's had two years to learn the offense, so he's going to be far better prepared then any rookie, but how much time does he get on the field during the season in practice?

This was why the Bolts drafted him in the first place, and he was evidently the fire under Brees's ass that woke him up-Rivers can get the job done. I realize I'm biased due to my NC State ties, but I feel you just have know idea what you really have-I watched him for 4 years. He is a very headsey QB, and I think will make Brees a distant memory-let the security blanket go, and take the Riverboat for a cruise(just don't invite any Vikings along).

A.J. has man-love for Rivers. Remember, A.J. was the one who obtained Rivers. The scuttlebutt around here is that A.J. has NEVER been that enthusiastic about Brees.

Only time will tell if Rivers can get the job done as the starter. One thing's for certain---> they're STILL talking on San Diego sports radio about his funky throwing motion!

I can't believe they are so anxious to drop Brees, who has turned into an excellent QB the last few years, for an untested 3-year rookie. I don't give a crap how great he wa sin college, that doesn't mean jack in the NFL. You would think SD learned their lesson 7 years ago with Kipers' "sure thing" Leaf.

I don't think there's much choice than to expect Rivers to be the starter from day one.  Everything I'm reading says that Brees may not be ready for the start of the regular season anyway.  IMO, either way, SD needs to get Rivers ready.

kind of amazing how that injury really changed their whole strategy. and it was the brilliant thinking of shottenheimer (i'm assuming it was his decision) to have him in on a meaningless game. incredible.

Absolutely. Should've let Rivers play the entire game and get some experience going. They probably should've sat LT as well.

A.J. and Marty reportedly DID have words over those decisions. Because Marty is the coach, he won that battle, but it started rumors of a rift between them. That rift fueled speculation a while back that Marty was going to be fired.
