Vickless Falcons?

Worth reporting regardless.

NFL Rumors from Combine: ProFootballTalk.com

One of the biggest rumors making the rounds in Indianapolis on the first day of the scouting combine is that quarterback Mike Vick wants out of Atlanta.

Though there's no specific information to prompt a conclusion that Vick has taken steps to engineer an exit from the team, his repeated criticism of the coaching staff since the end of the 2005 season has fueled speculation that a divorce could be coming.

Most recently, Vick took aim at Falcons offensive coordinator Greg Knapp, saying that Knapp "needs to know exactly what type of talent he's working with. . . . You've got to be creative.  There's no reason I should be passing for only 2,300 yards for the season.  My passing attempts per game are not even that high.  I hope it's not that they don't believe in me, because I believe in me."  (Knapp, by the way, attempted to downplay Vick's comments.)

Earlier this month, Vick said that he's "a little lost" in the Falcons' version of the West Coast offense.  "We're not dinking and dunking the way it's supposed to be done" he said.  "It may be hurting me.  It may be hurting the offense."

The talk in Indy is that Vick might refuse to restructure his contract, in the hopes that the team will trade him.  Adam Schefter of The NFL Network reports that talks aimed at reducing Vick's 2006 cap number have occurred.

The root of the problem appears to be Vick's relationship with coach Jim Mora.  The perception in some circles is that Vick "hates" Mora.

Indeed, we raised the question of whether Mora and Vick can coexist on December 26, based on their respective comments following a Falcons' loss to the Bucs on Christmas Eve after a chip-shot field goal was blocked in overtime.

Said Vick of the blown opportunity to win the game:  "It kind of put everything in perspective, like maybe this just ain't our year."

Said Mora when asked whether the blocked field goal made him conclude that "it just wasn't meant to be":  "That's a loser's attitude, and I would like to think we don't have a whole lot of losers in the locker room . . . .  People like that don't accomplish much in life."

Apart from the huge cap hit that the Falcons would take by moving Vick now, they'd have trouble finding someone to give up significant value for him.  As we hear it, a lot of teams regard him as a pain in the ass -- and as a guy who will only be successful if an offense is specifically designed to enhance his strengths, and to conceal his weaknesses.

To me, it's all about decision making. he has all the tools to be a very good QB.

Arm Strength

Vision

Mobility

Escapability

great running game

Solid TE

O-line

He just doesn't have it between the ears. He doesn't seem to go through his progressions quick enough...He goes from WR-TE-Run...when he passes he usually settles on the TE. I think he has the Kordell Stewart problem. he can only read half the field.

The Schaub game last year should be an eye opener, even if it was against a banged up NE team.

The problem with trading him, the Dirty South is filling up the building to see Vick. Lots of #7 spamshirts, and I don't think Home Depot is prepared to let that money leave.

That will only last so long. crappy shoes from spammers and NFL comemrcials will only convince the public for so long that he's the real deal, after a while he has to start winnign games.

If Dunn gets old overnight, and they don't get a 2nd RB. Things could get really ugly for Vick. The running game has covered up a lot of issues.

You should find out pretty quick if Vick can carry the load with his arm...he's never had to.

be careful what you wish for Vick...the word exposed comes to mind.

Could this be evolving into a case were the coaching staff and the owner may noy see eye to eye, but the coaches know they have a solid running game, and their best QB on the bench, and really wouldn't care if Vick left Atlanta? The owner on the other hand gets paid when fannies are in the seats. This may be TOish before it's over :D .

I believe it was yesterday when I seen he was gonna restructure his contract to free up more money for the Falcons. maybe I read it wrong.

He doesn't seem like the type to give up money (restructure) just to win. Seems more like the "all about Me type" to me.

Maybe the Falcons should go get Randle El so Vick can pitch to him and he can throw it.

Maybe the Falcons should have learned to use Vick in the "slash" role from the start and they'd be walking around with some wins under their belts ... He's a misused talent, an under-achieving athlete, over-inflated endorser. He's Kordell with a bit better natural ability, a less saavy offensive coordinator, and farrrrrr better hype.

I've never liked Vick and this report is so interesting. It's about time that the Falcons realize what they got. Schaub is a great QB and he can actually manage an offense. Vick will never get to a Super Bowl IMO because he is all about himself like people have said. He is a guy who always thinks run first when he drops back and you cannot change that. Vick will never be a drop back passer, plain and simple. He has a great arm but like I've been saying with Leinart, arm strength isn't everything. You gotta have something in your head and Vick clearly lacks that.

Good luck trying to unload that contract. This could get ugly fast.

1 important tool you didn't list is patience. Because he can run and he knows he can run, he will never have the patience to stay in the pocket.

Look at Manning, can't run to save his life but all the patience in the world.

Yeah, like I said...not too clearly...when passing he goes from WR to TE to Run the ball. Correct, he is not patient in the passing game.

Start Schaub at QB, Vick at WR/RB for pitches and screens and slants ... use Vick as QB on 10-12 snaps per game, some designated runs, some passes he can make, and some planned runs. Fewer turnovers, greater offensive efficiency, more wins. :D

I like the idea for the most part but are you really gonna want to pay 100 millions dollars to a guy in that role?

Yeah and as a Bears fan you're right you must have a omnipotent knowledge of good QBs. How can you say that you never liked Vick he is by far the greatest show on turf the athleticism that he brings to the game is incredible.

He has to look run right away because guess what if Crumpler ain’t in it’s already a 75% dead play because the WRs still lack the ability to get open and per his off season comments about Knapp it doesn't seem like he even felt comfortable with the plays he was in fact running..

And the play calling by Knapp last year did suck Vick isn’t a Peyton Manning drop backer. Knapp has such a versatile athlete it would studid how he couldn't sway from his 5 step drop back all day.

Go ahead with your rebutal. :D

The Falcons have to be conservative on offense and run the ball and call safe plays. the number 1 reason:

The defense is horrible and you need to keep them off the field. They have been a Running Back's dream the last 2 years. They have to control the ball/clock on offense, it's their only chance to win.

Vick's decision making isn't where it should be. But he had 3 years of experience(White/Jenkins) on the outside with Crumpler and a glorified TE/WR in Finneran.

If you watch Vick, most of his passes are in between the hashes...he runs outside the hashes. Don't know if this is by design, but it wasn't till late in the season did they start to consistently call out routes. There favorite out routes involve Crumpler running a cross with the WR to get outside. It's pretty vanilla.

I think the play calling was lacking a bit last year, and they should take a few more shots. The formula is pretty common though.

Dallas does it

Denver does it

KC does it

Seattle does it

all ball control

:D Dang. I hate it when one of my master plans gets blown out of the water ... you don't supposed he'd redo the deal to 2 mill per year for 4 years and a 92 million bonus if the falcons win back-to-back superbowls while he's there? :D

Hmm, seems to me those WRs who can't get open, sure found a way to get open for Schaub at QB:

http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/live/NFL_20051009_NE@ATL

maybe it has a little bit to do with the fact that Vick is the least accurate starting QB in the history of the NFL. You can have all the athleticism you want, but at the QB position, if you can't throw it, you can't win.
