Guest Sores
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports the Green Bay Packers are interested in Drew Brees. It appears new head coach Mike McCarthy isn't sold on Aaron Rodgers as the heir apparent to Brett Favre. (3/6/2006)
budlitebrad
Now can we get it right this time?

DMD
Well, no, who is? Why does SD ant to trade Brees anyway? 1354421 No trade - Brees is a free agent
budlitebrad
As far as I heard, Marty still wants to keep him, but I guess AJ has different ideas. Maybe the shoulder has him nervous.
Swiss Cheezhead
I'll say this -- IF Brett retires, I would have no problem targeting Brees with a bunch of that FA money we've got. The plain fact is that good QBs in their prime hit the free-agent market so rarely that it would be silly to ignore Brees simply because of Aaron Rodgers. As the 24th pick overall, it's not like his salary is large enough to justify him playing time by itself. Caveat: I think Brett will come back AND I think McCarthy likes Aaron Rodgers just fine. I've read reports that he liked him better than Alex Smith, but was overruled in the end.

Sounds to me like negotiations got a little contentious, but I'd say it's still better than 50/50 that he stays in SD.

Maybe the shoulder has him nervous. 1354437 Yes that is possible, but is it possible they want him to test the market and then sign him? With the QB problems they have had I just don't get why they would do this unless he is hurt. Maybe they are expecting a Pennington-type situation. I don't know. It just seems wacky. But sure I'd love to have the guy if the price is right.
budlitebrad
Brees will likely become a free agent because general manager A.J. Smith is only willing to offer a contract of mostly incentives to a quarterback who tore the labrum in his throwing shoulder during the Chargers' regular-season finale. But Smith's inflexible stance is flabbergasting for a club that's a Super Bowl contender -- with Brees. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writ....qbs/index.html These guys are almost there with their bolstered defense. It does seem stupid to change everything up, but it's hard to tell who's right until we see Brees throwing again. At this point, it still seems worth the chance. mggoilers
SD will be just fine without Brees. Rivers will have growing pains, but so did Brees. They still have the best RB and TE in football. A QB's best friend. You are paying Rivers a lot of money, and it time for him to show up. I think SD screwed up by letting Brees go for nothing, but he's a QB who has a bum shoulder and wants a big payday. Let him walk. The have put themselves in solid shape, and if they reinforce the O-line, they should be good. Green Bay doesn't get their line straight, it won't matter who's back there..Favre, Brees, or Rodgers. Chargerz
I have looked at my sports section today, and I can't find that report in the SD U-T. It's quite possible I missed it, but a link would be helpful.

He was never known for his ability to throw the long ball before, and now I'm REALLY leery of his arm. I just don't know about him any more.
