It's a family affair.

Man - that stupid song sticks with you.

Anyway, I was wondering about players that are related because it is the off-season, the CBA is done and I am still tired from all the shooting yesterday.

Here are some little known and relatively meaningless things I found - they are a few years old:

There is of course the well-known case of 2001 #1 draft pick Michael Vick and Saints QB Aaron Brooks, a pair of cousins from Newport News, Virginia. (It is also interesting that the official NFL website lists among Brooks's hobbies "personal reading, particularly Donald Goines novels," whereas Miami backup QB Ray Lucas apparently has no famous relatives, but does enjoy reading books about "the Mafia and serial killers.") But this is just the tip of the iceberg. Bengals QB Akili Smith is the cousin of Cleveland DB Marquis Smith. Dallas backup Anthony Wright is the cousin of former DB Jesse Campbell. Washington's Tony Banks is the cousin of former All-Pro LB Chip Banks. And speaking of Washington QBs, there's also a connection to the original black quarterback (the one Flavor was talking about in "She Watch Channel Zero"): Super Bowl XXII MVP Doug Williams has a cousin in current Atlanta DE Chuck Wiley (they both hail from Baton Rouge, LA).

As for other skill-position players, we of course have St. Louis all-everything back Marshall Faulk, cousin of New England RB Kevin Faulk (Louisiana boys both). Another member of the Rams' ridiculously high-powered offense, WR Isaac Bruce, is the cousin of Detroit's Derrick Moore (that particular family hails from Dillard, Florida). Then there's Detroit RB Sedrick Irvin, cousin of former Cowboy WR Michael Irvin. Giants WR Ike Hilliard, meanwhile, has an uncle Dalton who played for the Saints in the late 1980s. Loudmouthed Tampa Bay WR Keyshawn Johnson has two cousins who are also currently active in the league: Bengals rookie WR Chad Johnson and Titans veteran DB Samari Rolle.

And let's not forget the curious case of the New England secondary: Ty Law is the cousin of Oakland DB Anthony Dorsett, himself the son of legendary Dallas RB Tony Dorsett. Meanwhile, the Pats' other corner is Terrell Buckley, a distant cousin of Bears Hall-of-Famer Walter Payton. In other words, the Pats' starting corners are cousins of two of the greatest running backs ever to play the game. Now that's I call good genes.

Nor are the familial connections limited to merely football. For instance, New Orleans veteran QB Jeff Blake (now Aaron Brooks's backup) had a father who played in the Canadian Football League, while his godfather is none other than veteran major league baseball player Tim Raines. Dallas OT Flozell Adams is the cousin of NBA star Hersey Hawkins. Vikings DE Fernando Smith also has a pro basketball-playing cousin in Jeff Grayer of the Sacramento Kings. Veteran Oakland QB Rodney Peete, meanwhile, is a second cousin of pro golfer Calvin. The Dolphins' Semitic signal caller (and Dartmouth grad) Jay Fiedler has famous blood as well: his grandfather was a cousin of the late Boston Pops conductor Arthur Fiedler.

The success of players with similar pedigrees is understandable to at least some extent. Thus, we have the various kicking-brother dynasties (Morten & Gary Anderson, Martin & Bill Gramatica) and father-son quarterback legacies -- Archie & Peyton Manning (plus current top college prospect Eli), Bob & Brian Griese, Phil & Chris Simms (another top college prospect). This is all in keeping with the standard rules of succession in white patriarchal society. Likewise, it is also not terribly surprising that two identical twin brothers -- such as Tiki & Ronde Barber of the New York Giants and Tampa Bay Bucaneers -- would both be playing in the NFL.

2005 NFL DRAFT... "IT'S ALL RELATIVE"...

Alabama senior offensive guard EVAN MATHIS is related (nephew) to former Miami Dolphins defensive lineman BOB BAUMHOWER, who was drafted in the second round of the 1977 NFL Draft.

Connecticut senior defensive end TYLER KING is related (son) to former New England Patriots linebacker STEVE KING, who played from 1973 and 1981.

Florida State senior defensive tackle TRAVIS JOHNSON is related (cousins) to Oakland Raiders running back JUSTIN FARGAS (USC), who was a third round pick in the 2003 NFL Draft.

Former Florida State quarterback ADRIAN MCPHERSON and Nebraska junior cornerback/return man FABIAN WASHINGTON are cousins.

Indiana senior wide receiver COURTNEY ROBY is related (cousin) to former Miami Dolphins punter REGGIE ROBY, who passed away earlier this year.

Minnesota junior running back MARION BARBER III is related (son) to former NY Jets running back MARION BARBER.

Ohio State senior defensive back DUSTIN FOX is related (brother) to former Indianapolis Colts defensive back DEREK FOX.

Stanford senior cornerback STANLEY WILSON is related (son) to former Cincinnati Bengals fullback STANLEY WILSON, Sr.

Tennessee senior offensive lineman MICHAEL MUNOZ is related (son) to former Cincinnati Bengals offensive tackle ANTHONY MUNOZ, who was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 1998.

USC junior linebacker LOFA TATUPU is related (son) to former New England Patriots fullback MOSI TATUPU.

Utah senior offensive guard CHRIS KEMOEATU is related (brother) to Baltimore Ravens defensive tackle MAAKE KEMOEATU.

Washington senior fullback ZACH TUIASOSOPO is related (brother) to Oakland Raiders quarterback MARQUES TUIASOSOPO.

You can clearly see that the reason you are not in the NFL is not your fault, it is the fault of your parents and aunts and uncles for not preceding you.

It mentions about Brooks and Vick(x2) being from Newport News. I was watching on the NFL Network a little while ago that Allen Iverson is still considered the best QB to play at Newport News. :D

Kinda like a while back when Charlie Ward of the Knicks was considered the best QB in NY. :D

I watched Allen Iverson my freshman Year in High School. Bethel high beat my high school in the state championship game that season. Iverson threw two touchdown passes and returned a punt and interception for td's. The score was 28-0 and he accounted for every score. He was a junior in gigh school and was the #1 basketball and #2 football prospect in the country. The dude was sick.

All that talent ... and what's he famous for? Not leading his team to a championship? Forcing his naked wife out of the house? Threatening people with a gun? A homophobic rap album? Not being able to make Team USA despite pleas to be allowed to play? Yep. The dude is sick. :D

Good read.  Oh yeah, and great song.

So do you have turf finger from yesterday?

No but I think I have a third-degree burn from accidentally touching the barrel before it cooled.
