Brees using Saints

BREES DOESN'T WANT TO JOIN SAINTS

The scuttlebutt in league circles is that quarterback Drew Brees doesn't want to join the Saints, but that he's talking to them in the hopes of driving up the offer made by his preferred destination, the Miami Dolphins.

Word is that the Saints envision Brees as a short-term starter who would handle the job while Matt Leinart or Vince Young or Jay Cutler get ready to play. As a result, the Saints are offering the kind of deal that Kurt Warner signed two seasons ago in New York as Eli Manning got ready to play -- a two-year contract that is essentially a one-year deal.

The problem is that the Fins don't want to pay the same kind of money in 2006 that the Saints are willing to invest. Instead, Miami is giving Brees the opportunity to earn big money over the long term.

So the Saints are banking on Brees' shoulder being fully healed in time for the 2006 season, and the Dolphins are being more cautious.

In the end, Brees' best play might be to take less money in the short term with an organization that is far better equipped to succeed over the long haul.

Word is Teams dont want to even give a 3rd round pick, plus the huge contract, signing bonus, and the fact Daunte isnt even happy with money he is getting. My gut says they release him, and he signs with a team like Tenn, or Oakland for peanuts for 1 season.

I thought the Bree signing would be for the long term. I cant see him doing that again he would feel like he was a Charger again always feel someone behind him.

Brees will go where the Money is, or he would have stayed at SD. These guys talk all they want, but in the end.... it's all about the money.

So my question to you is this. If Brees is a Saint. Do they draft a QB in the first round?

yes, they are paying him like the giants paid warner, they clearly want to bring leinhart along slowly. I think they draft him even if they sign brees, unless they get a great offer to trade down..

It depends on the contract. If Brees is getting a better offer from N.O. than either Miami or SD could put on the table, that is a lot of moola. It makes very little sense to tie up that kind of money in a caretaker QB, and then spend a ton of money on Leinart.

N.O. just lost their starting LT. I know the Saints can do some screwy things, but if they sign Brees, I have to think they go Ferguson at 2 in the draft. It makes no sense for them to paint themselves into a corner.... sort of how the situation turned into in SD.

Consider the source of the original post - profootballtalk.com. Enough said.

$10mil in guaranteed money means Brees, if he signs, is the QB of the present and future. The #2 pick won't be for a QB (Loomis basically said so on Friday when asked about it in relation to possibly signing Brees).

The question I have is, what happened to Adrian McPherson? Coming out, he was the scouts were comparing his arm to John Elway's. Haven't even seen a mention of him...

the saints could do a very front loaded contract that would be a big base salary in the first years with a roster bonus and/or buy out later on after the second year.  There are ways to offer more guanranteed money, but make it cap friendly to part ways after two years.

they could, but i don't think brees would want to play under those circumstances, unless the $ was substantially higher than another team like Miami

rumours are that's exactly the case - a deal structured for all intents and purposes as a 2 year deal, but with substantially more upfront money.

There is no way they draft Leinhart if they sign Brees. the talk on the radio this AM is DE Williams if they swap with Jets. No way there either we just had 3 DE's and let 1 walk why do we want 3 again ( i'm talking starters) If this plays out according to plan they will draft LB which they need the most help at.

Clayton yesterday: "Contract talks between the Dolphins and Brees' agent, Tom Condon, did not take place because Brees spent the day undergoing a battery of doctors' tests. He underwent so many that he had to visit at least two different facilities to be tested. Not only did doctors perform an MRI on his shoulder, but the Dolphins gave Brees a full physical."

I'm glad the Dolphins are doing their homework.

Anybody know if the Saints did their own tests before they offered him a contract?

Why bother when Miami is paying to have them all done. :D

Looks like Brees left town without a deal. I'm glad Miami is not gonna cave in and over pay this guy. Let him go to NO for all I care at this point. I would rather take a chance at a healthy Patrick Ramsey than paying too much for Brees who might not even play in '06 or at least play to his full potential. I too believe brees is using NO to drain more money out of Miami. I'm glad we have new leadership in Mueller and Saban who aren't gonna fall for that sh*t. If Wanny/Spielman were still there we would of sold our souls for him since they were the dummies that passed on Brees in the first place for CB Jamir Fletcher. :D

From a FF standpoint, I'm hoping Brees goes to NO over Miami. (what I really want is him in Detroit, but that seems unlikely) That esentially means the Saints have a better chance to select Ferguson which helps Deuce owner twice over to help make up for the loss of Bentley.

Now why did you have to bring that up? I remember that day like it was yesterday. I couldn't believe they took Fletcher over Brees.

If Dumbstadt & Spielman were still here Brees would have sined a 10 year 112 million dollar contarct with the Dolphins yesterday without taking a physical.

You Miami fans don't even know what you've got... watch Cleo Lemon in training camp. I'm already sure your eyes will be glued to the QB position. Theres a good chance you'll sh*t your pants in joy. Saban did his homework big time there when you guys a$$raped the Chargers (just ask Marty Schottenheimer) to get him. The answer may already be on your roster.

Certainly beter than a reheated leftover turd like Patrick Ramsey.
