Can teams go too far in free agency?

I love the free agent signing period. With all of the movement, however, I wonder if there is a fine line of bringing in too many free agents, and just adding a couple of pieces to the puzzle.

Last year, I remember seeing Minn. just go crazy in free agency. You had to think they would be better, but I also thought that they made too many changes in a short period of time and would suffer for it. I firmly believe that this was a big reason why they struggled early, (aside from Cpep) especially on defense. They seemed to get things together about half way through the season.

I also think that some GM's believe this way as well and only look for a few additions regardless of the amount of money they have to spend. Thoughts?

I think so in some ways. If a team has a strong identity and you bring in players that could disrupt the chemistry would be going over the line. The vikings had no identity on defense and bringing Sharper and Pat Williams was key.

I agree and it seemed to really work as the season went on. I would expect the defense to be much better this year after a year of playing together.

I still think that there's more than just chemistry issues. Trust could be another issue, or just knowing how another player reacts to plays, etc.

I think the Skins went too far because they over-upgraded skill positions and needed to add to the guys up front...

they have no OL depth....

the Browns almost went too far, but they were smart about things IMO...

they added a stud and a good player on the OL...added a clutch, posession WR...a proven vet and leader at LB in the 3-4 scheme and umm....a NT in T Washington....

I think that was it...

the skins added 2 WR's, a safety, a mediocre DE, another backup QB and umm I forget what else...but they went too far in overpaying and not really helping the team...

Man, you guys have got to be kidding. The Redskins added quality at needed positions and got some of the top free agents at each position.....and yer saying they "over-upgraded"!?!

:D:D Now Ive heard it all from the peanut gallery (and DJ, you know I love you, but yer still suffering from peenies envy as a sad Miami fan).

Richie Rich Snyder's open pocketbook and league leading revenue generation brought Joe Gibbs and the most experienced coaching staff in the NFL, Portis, Moss, Cooley, Taylor, Carlos Rogers, a killer defense, and round two of the playoffs last year. And now some excellent free agent pickups. And the Redskins are the most innovative and creative team in the offseason signing market, with restructuring contracts and getting the players to buy into their goals.

"Over upgraded." :D:D The Browns?!? :D

I guess going to the playoffs last year and winning their first game was "going too far." And as for over-paying, you guys need to pay attention. Every year people say the Redskins over pay and then they restructure and negotiate and are just fine. Chicken little syndrome and wishful thinking envy at work in this thread.

Edit: Oh that's right, they brought in Todd Collins to back him up :D

Puddy. You squishy little bisch. No you didnt. Was Brunell viable last year, pickle cavity?

I originally hated the Brunell pickup but last year worked just fine for me. And I remember what Gibbs did with some no names like Jay Schroeder, Doug Williams and Mark Rypien. We will be fine with Brunell or Campbell.

And personally, I am very happy yer sexual fantasies are fulfilled by the Dullphins signing of a gigantic lusty sex boat riding black man, Duchess. You can get football fun and sexual gratification next season all rolled into one.

I implied that Brunell did fine managing the offense last year, but would not count on that from him again. That's the one area I see where the season could be lost that's all.

It's such a GOOD VIBRATION....

Gibbs really likes him. We wont really know til Brunell breaks his hip in game 5.

I was pulling for him to go to the 'Phins last year.

They took a lot of crap for drafing him - but right now, it does not seem like too bad a decision.

Well we now have Kitna and McCown.  Hopefully one of them will kick ass in Martz' offense.

Nope. see my post in the McCown signing thread.

Actually, on the original topic, I think teams often do "anything," including "too much", just to be sure they so "something". (For many years here in Cincy, we wish we'd have done "anything").

Marvin Lewis is not like that (and I'm glad). He comes from the Pitt (and several others) model where you build your team, using FAs as only a piece here or there. There's an argument that this may have slowed the improvement of the Bengals (esp on def), but I believe that when they finally get it "built", the Bengals are gonna be a very good team for a decent stretch.

I think the Skins have made themselves the best team in the NFC myself. of course it is not just what the Redskins have done, what other teams have not done has effected this as much as what the Redskins have done. as weak as the NFC is , I do not see a better team in it.
