NYJ want Schaub for Abraham

With Vick a bit fragile, I bet they want to keep Schaub.

Falcons wary of trading Schaub

By STEVE WYCHE

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The Falcons do not want to include backup quarterback Matt Schaub in a trade for New York Jets defensive end John Abraham, although his inclusion could finalize a deal for the three-time Pro Bowl player.

Falcons coach Jim Mora reiterated Wednesday the team's stance that no deal has been appealing enough to part with Michael Vick's insurance policy.

"Who wouldn't have an interest in a player the caliber of Jonathan Abraham?" Mora said. "The fact is that he's the property of the New York Jets. This organization has a lot of respect for Matt Schaub as a player and a person, and we value him as a backup to Michael Vick."

Mora did not deny the team's interest in Abraham, which the Journal-Constitution first reported from last month's NFL Scouting Combine, or that the Falcons are engaged in trade talks with the Jets. He did not go into specifics of the conversations with New York other than to say the Falcons have not received an offer that would make them want to part with Schaub, who just finished his second season.

Schaub's agent, David Dunn, has declined comment about his client's status.

ESPN.com reported that the Jets have asked for Schaub and a second-round draft pick in return for Abraham. The Jets are believed to be among a handful of teams that have inquired about Schaub for months. All have been rebuffed. President and general manager Rich McKay also said Monday that no offer for Schaub has been good enough.

The Falcons have some negotiating leverage because several teams have filled their defensive end needs in free agency or used up salary-cap space to sign free agents at other positions. With a dwindling market, Atlanta might not have to exchange more than draft picks, which it would be willing to do, save for their first-round selection — the 15th overall pick.

With so many draft picks from the past two seasons playing valuable roles, McKay acknowledged earlier this week the Falcons would be willing to trade picks for veteran players.

Schaub has two career starts, losing both, but his performances in the preseason and in last season's 31-28 loss to New England, in which he started for an injured Vick and completed 18 of 34 passes for 298 yards and three touchdowns, have made the 6-foot-5, 237-pounder an appealing prospect. Schaub also becomes a restricted free agent after this season, which means if he signs with another team, the Falcons have the right to match the offer.

Mora and McKay have said that Schaub is not untouchable, but his value to the Falcons — especially since Vick tends to get injured, and there are no other experienced backup quarterbacks on the roster — is high enough that, at this time, they aren't willing to swap him for a player of Abraham's caliber.

The Falcons recently released veteran right defensive end Brady Smith after injuries limited him to just five games and left his availability for next season in question. A right end, Abraham has accumulated 53 1/2 sacks in his six NFL seasons — 20 over the past two. He also forced six fumbles last season, when he had 10 1/2 sacks.

The Falcons confirmed they have the cap room to meet Abraham's unspecified demands for a new contract and have the ability to sign other free agents, like safety Lawyer Milloy, who was offered a three-year deal Monday.

Since being named the Jets' franchise player after the season — a move that enabled New York to keep him off the free-agent market to either trade him or renegotiate his contract — Abraham would have to agree to a contract with a suitor before signing off on a trade. If he is not moved, he would earn $8.3 million next season.

The Jets and Abraham have made it clear they'll most likely be parting ways.

Abraham and Milloy both visited the Seahawks on Wednesday. Abraham has not visited the Falcons, but he could over the next few days.

I think the falcons are extremely hesitant to trade Schaub.  At the same time though, he's got to be worth more to another team; that team just has to be willing to pony up.

He's a free agent after next year. They should trade him this year and actually get something for him.

Is it just me or is Abraham worth a whole lot more than Schaub who has started a total of 2 NFL games?

I dont know about that. If he ends up a Great QB. Then they will be getting ROBBED. I like Schaub. I seen not only his games via NFL. But games while he was in college. The kid got the goods. So they aint stuip. But are stuiped at the same time. They need to trade him Because next yr he could end up like Drew Bree no compensation for him. Plus once the draft get here and teams do their thing his value is going to go down. Its at its highest now.

Add me to this camp.

When Schaub lit up the Patriots -- the only "legitimate" evidence of his talent -- nobody knew just how bad their secondary was. I believe the Pats defense went on to allow several more 300-yard passers after Schaub's performance.

At the same time, I have a feeling the Falcons are slowly becoming disillusioned with Vick. Neither the coach nor the GM were in place when Vick became the face of the franchise. I'm sure Blank still has lots of love for him, but I think there might be a growing sentiment that if Vick goes down again and Schaub leads them to a handful of victories, Vick would be tradeable. If Vick goes down again WITHOUT Schaub to rescue the team, it would reinforce the opinion that Vick is so crucial to the success of the team. That might not be something McKay and Mora want.

They should resign him and trade Vick.

You're right, but it'll be nearly impossible given that Vick has failed to live up to the lofty expectations of his huge contract. He's pretty much untradeable right now. The Falcons would have to give up A LOT to justify another team picking up Vick's tab. Plus, wouldn't the Falcons take a huge cap hit from his remaining (prorated) signing bonus?

I'm not sold on Schaub being an NFL starter, but he's looked VERY good in limited action over the past two seasons. And the Jets are desperate for a QB right now.

It's more of hate for Vick than love for Schaub.

JMO but Schaub being an insurance policy is not good business sense!~ Vick is young and "IF" he stays healthy, Schaub never sees the light of day at starting in Atlanta....RFA next year, but without experience (Patriot game) he won't command much in the RFA market.....of course if Vick does get hurt along the line in 2006--Schaub comes in and does a respectable job....Atlanta then finds themselves in an RFA nightmare, asw they won't be able to match other teams offers for Schaub unless they dump Vick and make him their number 1.....will be interesting to watch this develop now and over the season.....Atlanta had a good back-up way back in 1991( I think) and they traded him away to the Packers....Brett Favre became....well you know the rest of the story as Paul Harvey says.... :D I'd either take the Abraham deal and trade Schaub, but make the draft choice a 4th rounder instead of a 2nd rounder....Schaub is only of value to the Falcons for 2 reasons:

1) Vick can't get the job done

2) Vick gets hurt

Vick is too young for any other reason to make sense....so what is the think tank in Atlanta saying....1 or 2 ??????? If Schaub is just a temporary replacement for Vick then his value is minimal to Atlanta....and an opportunity cost to the defense (Abraham) ..... :D

The addition of a pick is a bit much. I would see if I could make the trade player for player. If anything, they'd be ridding themselves of a malcontent

edited to add: but then, I want to see the Jets get screwed :D

It's not so much that I think Schaub is the 2nd coming of Montana or anything like that... but I know he has played for 4 years in College in an offensive scheme that will most likely be a lot like the one Childress is implementing in Minnesota. So it's more that he is a promising back up that would fit our designs well.

But you're right... there are a lot of sack leeches on Schaub right now. Will be interesting to see if Atlanta lets him go, and if so for how much.

Publicly the Atlanta think tank is saying #2)

Mora and McKay have said that Schaub is not untouchable, but his value to the Falcons — especially since Vick tends to get injured, and there are no other experienced backup quarterbacks on the roster — is high enough that, at this time, they aren't willing to swap him for a player of Abraham's caliber.
Team officials realize that Vick's derring-do style will always make him susceptible to injuries, and that Atlanta needs a solid backup capable of possibly starting a few games every season. The Falcons consider Schaub ideal for that role.
Schaub offers the Falcons insurance against an injury to Michael Vick, whose reckless style makes him susceptible to injuries. Vick has never started all 16 games in a season. The Falcons are not comfortable, at least at this point, that they can locate another backup quarterback with commensurate abilities.

The season Atlanta had to go with back up QB's Doug Johnson & Kurt Kittner... :D ...is still too fresh

You've also got to remember a few of things here.

#1) John Abraham has made it pretty clear he doesn't want to play for the Jets anymore.

#2) It's the Jets who are shopping him, not teams coming to them for Abraham.

#3) Abraham is going to want a BIG contract.

#4) Abraham, while a great pass rusher, is kind of one dimensional and a bit too susceptible to injuries.

In summation....no freakin' way he's worth a 1st rounder, or Schaub & a 2nd rounder. Especially when you factor in the contract he's going to want.

Atlanta had a good back-up way back in 1991( I think) and they traded him away to the Packers....Brett Favre  became....well you know the rest of the story as Paul Harvey says

Sorry if this goes OT, but as much as I am a Favre fan he was NOT considered a "good backup" when he was in Atlanta. He was a young QB with a lot of physical tools who partied too much.

From Wikipedia:

he was a third-string quarterback with unremarkable numbers and an affinity for partying. He got into repeated clashes with head coach Jerry Glanville. His most notable accomplishments, aside from going 0 for 5 passing with two interceptions that year, were missing the team photo (he'd been out the night before), for which he was fined, and making a $100 bet with Jerry Glanville that he could throw the ball into the upperdeck of Fulton County Stadium. Favre won the bet and Jerry Glanville paid him the money.

Had he stayed in Atlanta, he would have partied himself right out of the league in a couple of years. Luckily for Favre and all Packer fans, Wolf took a chance and Holmgren tamed him a little bit. Now he's headed to the HoF.

Also, the Packers had a guy named Matt Hasselbeck, who looked promising in preseason games. They traded him for a first rounder rather than lose him as a FA, used that pick on Jamal Reynolds, and the rest is history.

I'm surprised nobody else has thought of this...Atlanta should make their QB position a Family Affair. Trade Shaub for Abraham/pick and then sign Aaron Brooks as the back up. Then use the pick to draft Michaels little brother, problem solved. No matter who's healthy you always have some sort of consistancy at the QB position :D

Was just in my car getting some lunch and the guy on WFAN was saying that apparently Abraham is headed down to Atlanta to take a physical? But then in the next breath he said that Atlanta remains adamant that they will not include either Schuab or their first round pick (15th overall) in any deal for Abraham, so I'm not sure what to make of this.

It means that the Jets ain't gonna get Schaub or a 1st rounder for Abraham. Nor should they.

Like I said, even though Abraham is a really good pass rushing DE, he's too one dimensional and simply isn't worth that much, especially when you factor in the contract he'll demand.
