Childress Interview this morning

I was listening to KFAN on the way to work this morning, and they had the Vikings' head coach Brad Childress on for a while. Pretty good interview... not too much came out that I hadn't alreaady heard but there were a couple of things that piqued my interest.

They asked Childress to rate himself between 1 and 10 as a disciplinarian. Without any hesitation whatsoever, he said that he is somewhere between an 8 and a 10.

He talked about how the idea of a Players' Coach is just something of an enigma to him. Basically he will be the polar opposite of Tice.

They also asked Childress about his runningbacks. He talked about Chester Taylor for a while and how happy he is with that signing and how Taylor has low mileage and will fit his system very well. Then he briefly mentioned all of the other RBs and wht they can bring to the table. But the glaring ommission there was that even though he mentioned all other RBs by name, he never once mentioned Onterrio Smith. :D

I noticed that, neither did he mention Moe Williams. Also heard later that Rosenthal restructured his contract. He wasn't too great last year, but hopefully he'll be backing up Marcus Johnson.

Personally, I think a coach who is big on discipline is just what the doctor ordered around here. Might cause some headache at first(as the last two coaches let the players run wild) but in the long run it will be best.

As far as Childress not mentioning Onterrio, I could be wrong, but I thought I read somewhere that the organization is not allowed to comment on his status while he is on League suspension? Someone may be able to confirm or correct me on that. And Moe Williams is gone so they wont be commenting on him at all anymore.

I coulda swore people were still commenting on Ricky when he was suspended last year. :D

I agree the disciplinarian would be good for that outfit. Also, someone who is a disciplinarian probably would not have a great initial impression of someone who got busted and had to sit a year out. If anything, it would make it that much harder on the Whizzinator. He could probably get back in good grades with coach, but trust has to be earned and it seems as though he has a looonnnnggg way to go.

The guy hasn't coached one game as an HC.  How can he be overrated?  Who is 'overrating' him?

Thats what I was going to say...he has the potential to be the next Lombardi or the next Les Steckel...

I think we should let him coach a game first...

Brad Childress is a good offensive mind. He'll make something out of nothing. Besides, that team needs some discipline. To say he is overrated when he hasn't even coached a game is beyond me. What has Mike Shanahan done for you guys lately? That's what I thought.

Nice work bronc you found the FIGHT button.

But i would like to know who is overrating him as well.

Himself. KFAN was reading some quotes from him yesterday and he sounds pretty high on himself. Did you know the Vikings didn't choose him as a head coach, he chose them?

What the flip does that mean? KC, your last two posts I've read on the Vikes make about as much sense as you avatar.

Alright here we go...

Childress is undoubtably overrated in that he should not have a head coaching job period. In Philly it wasn't Childress that ran the offense it was Andy Reid and that Childress was praised for McNabb's somewhat success as a QB coach. And his this press shucks that he's pulling TO is just a shot at him and Culpepper. I hope they run over the Vikings this year. I just can't see why the Vikes were so quick to pick this guy and what they see in him. And while I'm holding true judgement for what I see in the season right now I see him as a glorified Tice upgrade.

Personally I see the dude as a tool. he bragged about being able to have the GB job, like that matters, and compares Culpepper to Owens. I wish we had Culeppper over Bledsoe, but then again, id take Bledsoe over Brad Johnson any day of the week. Basically the dude needs to shut up and get to work. If he is all that, we will see next season. Personally I think he doesnt have the talent to get this team in the playoffs, and wonder if he will far better than Tice did last yr record wise.

He implied that he could have had any coaching job he wanted. That sounds like he's pretty high on himself for having never been a head coach before. Make sense or should I type slower for you?

Wow, Childress was ripped by the local media for not giving interviews and being tight lipped... now he opens up a little he is getting ripped by an adolescent horsey fan. I guess you think that Culpepper wanting a raise after one of the worst seasons of his life, not to mention coming off a serious knee injury, is not a "ME" attitude? When Childress tool over the Viking's HC job he raived about Daunte! (or are you too young to remember that?) Daunte did not want to play for the Vikings because he was going to be held accountable for his actions on and off the field.

We'll all see what happens in Miami when he can't read defenses there either and ends up fumbling the ball twice a game!

That's what Childress told his players this week. That if he hadn't taken this job, he'd be coaching the Packers right now.
