NO link yet, jut heard on radio (Sporting News).

I believe the Vikings get a 3rd rounder if they don't match Seahawks offer.

Hate to see the Vikings give up on Nate at this point. He is a nice posession receiver and with K-Rob stretching the field, he may go back to his 2004 form.

Seattle signs Nate Burleson to $49 million offer

Seattle signed restricted free agent Nate Burleson to an offer sheet on Friday afternoon, giving the Vikings seven days to either match the offer or lose him and receive the Seahawks' third-round pick in next month's draft. The Seahawks' offer is for seven-years and $49 million and includes $5.25 million guaranteed, according to people with knowledge of the situation.

Burleson, 24, is from Seattle and was a multi-sport star at O'Dea High School. The brother of former Gophers basketball player Kevin Burleson, Nate was named the Seattle Athlete of the year as a senior in high school in 1999.

The Vikings surprised some March 2 by extending the lowest possible qualifying offer to Burleson. The tender was worth $712,000 and would result in the team getting a draft pick equal to the round in which Burleson was selected. Shortly after that happened Burleson changed agents and hired Ken Sarnoff. Burleson visited the Seahawks last week; a trip to Houston never materialized.

The Vikings' third-round pick in 2003, Burleson appeared to come into his own in 2004. He led Vikings wide receivers with 68 catches for 1,006 yards with nine touchdowns. Expected to become the team's No. 1 receiver last season, Burleson struggled with injuries and finished with 30 catches for 328 yards and a touchdown in 12 games. His season-high of six catches came in the regular-season finale against Chicago.

If Burleson departs, the Vikings depth chart at receiver would include Travis Taylor, Marcus Robinson and Koren Robinson. Koren Robinson played for the Seahawks before joining the Vikings last September.

The Vikings acquired another Seahawk this week when guard Steve Hutchinson officially joined the team after signing a seven-year, $49 million contract that included $16 million in guarantees. Hutchinson had been designated as Seattle's transition player.

Saw the same thing on Espn...no details there either.

I was hoping to have KRob and Nate as the two starters this year. Is the 3rd rounder for this year?

While I would still prefer we keep him, I can see the team opting to take the draft pick if it's this year. A 1st rounder, two 2nds, and two 3rds? A good way to start your first draft. I would think that would give them a lot of options if at some time they thought it worth moving up in the draft, they'd have the picks to bargain with.

I would hate to see Burleson go, he is/will be a solid performer and seems to fit the good-guy persona that the team is looking for. It was dissapointing that the Vikes low-balled him on his qualifying offer, but WR is a position they have some serious depth at with K-Rob, Taylor, Williamson, M. Robinson and Burleson.

So the way I see it is, they were taking one of three approaches to this.

#1 they were hoping to get him on the cheap for a year and hope he bounces back from the injuries that slowed him last year.

#2 they were letting him get a feel for what he could get in the open market and if it was outragous then they could nab an extra pick by letting him go.

#3 market testing again, but this time with the hopes of getting a feel for his demands for a long term deal, which they could then match and have him locked up prior to a big comeback year and a greatly increased cost in the next off season.

Heheheheh where's the "poison pill"??

IMO - 5.5 Million Gauranteed is waaaay too much money for Burleson. That alone might be overpaying him. I am guessing, but his salary is really low the 2 or 3 years. He will either have to rework his contract or will be cut.

Bye Nate - I am happy for him. He is a good player who works hard without an attitude. I am sure Seattle fans already know that. I wish him success...

At least we get some compensation...

$49 mil, holy crap that would be the outrageous offer

They really showed us up :D

I guess there are two poison pills in the contract. I think either Seattle has a grudge or they are trying to prove a point to the league. Either way, we get their third round pick.

You are right, they did get us on that one, but could end up being a really costly point to prove for the SeaChickens.

Wow, that really seems like a lot of $$ for a #2 receiver. :D Like Outshined stated earlier, I'm sure that the contract is heavy on the back side.

I am happy for Nate as he is from the Seattle area and I think he really wanted to play there. Good signing for the Seahawks as he doesn't have the drops like some of their other receivers did. If he returns to his 2004 form, they will have a great WR.

Now when does the Porter versus Burleson comparisons start as each has a new QB! :D

Jackson-28

Engram-33

Remember Minnesota saw enough in Burleson to get rid of Moss and anoint him as the #1 immediantely. Last year Nate didn't get into any rythm with the Viks due to injuries and great play out of K-Rob and M-Rob

Burleson is 24-25 years old and should be a solid starter in Seattle next season.

The entire $49Million contract will be guaranteed UNLESS

#1 Nate coordinates the next player outing for new Viking players on Lake Minnetonka AND a minimum of 4 sexually explicate activities must take place

#2 Nate has to catch a pass from a Vikings QB whose hands are the size of a 10 year old and weighs over 250 lbs.

Take that MINNESOTA :D

Here's the link to the poison pill.

Nate Burleson's homecoming more like a matter of time

Wide receiver Nate Burleson has signed an offer sheet with the Seahawks. It's a seven-year agreement totaling $49 million. Sound familiar? It's the same total that Minnesota signed Steve Hutchinson for. The similarities don't stop there.

Burleson's offer comes complete with a couple provisions that will be impossible to swallow.

The whole deal becomes guaranteed if Burleson is to play more than five games in the state of Minnesota. There's a second provision that involves Burleson's salary compared to the running backs on the team that is also the basis for a poison pill.

Call them a pair of poison pills. Try not to choke on the irony.

Minnesota got Hutchinson in part because the Seahawks would have had to guarantee the entire $49 million contract to match the Vikings' offer as it was written. That came from a clause that said Hutchinson must be the highest-paid lineman on his team from the time the offer sheet was signed through the end of 2006 otherwise the deal was guaranteed.

The sum total of Burleson's contract isn't worth focusing on. The real measuring stick is that $5.25 million is guaranteed to go to Burleson (for comparison, Hutchinson was guaranteed $16 million by Minnesota). But it would take a stunning reversal -- one the Seahawks didn't get with respect to Hutchinson -- for Seattle not to end up with Burleson, an O'Dea graduate who had 1,006 yards receiving in 2004 when he was playing opposite Randy Moss in Minnesota.

The Vikings will have seven days to match the offer to Burleson. If Minnesota doesn't match, the Vikings will receive a third-round draft pick as compensation because Burleson is a restricted free agent.

I expect you'll see the "poison pill" issue being addressed so this doesn't happen any more. It's already gotten to the rediculous point.

As every other Vikings fan has been saying, I hate to see Burleson go but there is no way the Vikings would have matched the offer even without the poison pills.

At least the Vikings will get a 3rd round pick out of the deal. Now the Vikings have 2 second round picks and 2 third round picks. Perhaps they can package them to move up in the 1st round of the draft. We'll see how creative the new regime can be.
