Point the way folks, I'll be there next month.

Places already on my list are the Charthouse, Legal Seafood and a little Italian joint in Lexington called Vinny Testa's.  :D

Too early for lobster season...  :D

:D Legal Seafood and Vinny Testas are chain restaurants...

I have an idea...list a few restaurant types you want to visit, and I can make some recommendations.

What makes you think it's too early for lobsters?

Union Oyster House: Claim to fame-Oldest Restaurant in the U.S.

If you get out towards Harvard, there is a place called East Coast Grille. They have this Hot Sauce called Inner Beauty. It will cause pain for a week but is so good.

:DVinny's is a chain? I've never seen another one. It's 5 minutes from the corporate office, so we hit it for lunch a lot. I'm determined to win a free lunch with the drawing they do. :D

I know Legal is a chain, but they've always had killer swordfish. :D

I'd like to seen anything that's unique to Boston, I'm not picky about the kind of food.

Thanks, Bier and LawDawg for your suggestions. How pricey is Blue Ginger?

Also a chain...but pretty good...

Blue Ginger is pretty good. It's asian style cuisine, fancy, reservations are a good thing later in the week. It's in Newton, kind of near Lexington. I can help you get there. This meal will probably cost you $65 for yourself (I am assuming you don't drink), considering if you have an appetizer, entree and desert. You can eat for less, but I am assuming a $30 entree, a $9 app, and a $9 dessert.

The Union Oyster House is a Boston staple, and you can get good lobster there year round. I would recommend either this or Anthony's Pier 4 for a great Boston seafood staple. There is also Kingfish, which is in Faneul Hall. It's a Todd English joint. All will be somewhat pricey. If you want less expensive stuff, you can go to Legals. Being a chain isn't like being the devil. Or you can try to get into the Barking Crab, which is near to South Station

Also in Fanuel Hall (right across from Kingfish) is Todd English's Rustic Kitchen. I have had nice meals there. He has one other place in Boston (Charlestown actually) called Olives, which is his high end place. Very good, as pricey as The Blue Ginger, and worth it!

The East Coast Grill is also very good, although not all that close to Harvard. It's on Cambridge Street maybe a 10-15 minute walk from Harvard Square. IMHO, there are places more unique. Around the corner from East Coast Grill is a Tapas restaurant called Dali, in Sommerville. Tough to get into, but phenomenal. They have 2 other restaurants as well, Tapeo which is in the Back Bay on Newbury Street, and Solea which is on Moody Street in Waltham. It's well worth hitting one of these places!!

In the same spirit as Vinny Testas, there is Maggiano's (which is another chain, but better), or you could try to get into one of the La Famiglia locations. There is one on Newbury Street, and another in the North End.

This hardly scratches the surface, really. There are so, so many great places to eat. Again, if you give me some ideas of things you want to try, I can be more specific with locations and areas.

There are tons of good places to eat in Boston. Jimmy, how many days are you going to be in town, and how many nights are you looking to have a nice meal? And will you be in the Lexington area most of your time, or more in Boston?

Great info - thanks Nick. I've been to Maggiano's, it was good.

I think I'm actually staying in Waltham, because we've got a 1-day seminar there in the hotel.

I'll be there four nights and will hunt for a good meal every night. My peers will want to explore downtown, as some of them have not been. They're all drinkers, and I'm their DD. :D If I remember right, there's a bar called the Black Rose there in Thaniel Hall. Great food and fantastic Irish music.

The Union Oyster House sounds like a must visit. I'll try and hit that the first night when I have more time.

Thanks again.

Okay then...

Since you'll be in Waltham, you should do Solea one night. Make that the night you have the seminar so you don't have to do much travelling.

Then I would do the Union Oyster house, and after dinner you can hop across the street to the Bell In Hand.

Another night...well, if you want to eat at the Black Rose then there you go, OR I think you will get a much better meal at Todd English's Rustic Kitchen, which is very near tothe Black Rose. The only real problem here is that you are in the same area of Boston as the Union Oyster House.

Then you should try to do a night in the Back Bay area. It's a great area. If you want cheaper eats, but still great, Try the Parrish Cafe on Boylston Street. Great, great food for not a ton of $$. OR if you want a great steak dinner you could go to Abe and Louis, Mortons, the Capital Grille, or Grill 23. There is a Vinnie Testas in this area, and a Legal Seafood if you really must go to one of them. Personally I would walk up and down Bolyston St and Newbury St from Arlington street to Hereford Street (It's one bid square) and find a spot that looks appealing. It's hard to get a bad meal.

And if you want to sub one of those nights out, go to the North End of Boston for Italian and just pick a spot. I have had great meals at Asiago and Pressa as well as La Famiglia (enormous amounts of food here), but it's really hard to find a bad place. If it's bad, it goes out of business becasuse there is so much great food around it.

:D Thanks. That about covers my next 5 trips to Beantown.

La Famiglia sounds familiar. We ate at a killer Italian joint one time where everything was served family style and we were in a fancy banquet room just below street level.

rachel ray- boston

i remember seeing this episode thinking that almost every place she went to looked great.

1387837[/snapback]

Bukowski's - great hole in the wall bar. Good pub food. Great beer selection. Real drunkards hangout.

The Rack - Hot, hot, and did I mention hot women here. If you're not hot, you're not working at the Rack. The poll tables are just a cover for the name :D

Elephant Walk - Never eaten here, but have several friends that have. Highly recommended. Easy to get to.

Louis Boston - Never heard a thing about is. I don't go into the Louis Vitttone Store. Go figure. You won;t either unless you are Squeegiebo or gay.

Fresh - :D Fresh Catch? Great dive in the North end for seafood.

Uni - :D

Thirsty Scholar Pub - Great Pub in Canmbridge. Excellet atmosphere, good pub food

Mr. Bartley's Burger Cottage - :D never heard of it.

Boston Beer Works - Great beer, better food. Underrated by the locals. Love this place. Does most of it's business around Redsox games.

No Name Restaurant - Sucks. Not worth the effort. WAY over rated.

Union Oyster House - :D

Santarpio's Pizza - Another place I haven;t been, but my 3 pizza eating buddy gives this place :D:huh:

Sports Grille Boston - :D

Fire and Ice - Great concept. Pick your own raw food, and sauce if you like, and they grill it to order. All you can eat. Good stuff.

Kung Fung Garden - No info

Sunset Grill and Tap - 110 beers on tap, over 300 total available, great food, best hot wings in boston IMHO (John Harvards is a not so distant second)

Abe & Louie's - Great steakhouse. We have a few. If you're from KC, you won;t be impressed. If you're form a big city not surrounded by cows that has top notch steakhouses, you will enjoy this. Part of a local chain, but a unique concept within that chain, and not done like a chain.

Casa Romero - Another place highly recommended by friends.

Check out this new place called: Boston Market. Excellent chow.

And while you are there, I would HIGHLY recommend grabbing a hunk of Boston Creme Pie. It's to die for.

I liked it better when they were Boston Chicken.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hit the Union Oyster House: :D The broiled seafood platter was very good.

Also hit The Littleist Bar, The Green Dragon and some place close there claiming to be the oldest bar in the States. Lots of history in there in a few square blocks. :D
