BigTen
Are we actually starting to see this team acting like an NFL franchise? Lions coaches already ruffling feathers In the first three weeks of off-season workouts, the message the coaching staff is delivering to players is this: Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. The coaches are making it clear that starting jobs will be earned, not assigned on previous performance or draft or contract status. The coaching staff has already ratcheted up the intensity during their brief periods on the practice field; some players (including veterans) have already been cussed out loudly during drills. And another surprise is coming. Head coach Rod Marinelli is a strong believer in having his starters play on special teams and that's not going to go over well with some of the Lions. Marinelli dismisses any notion that players might become disgruntled. At the owners meeting last week, Marinelli said that if Pro Bowl players like Derrick Brooks and Ronde Barber could play on special teams in Tampa, the players in Detroit can handle it, too. I'll say it again -- this is going to be an interesting training camp. Edited April 7, 2006 by BigTen

TheGrunt
Thank you! Besides, I do not think I need to say the Lions will suck, that is a given 1409315 It's really wierd because on paper the lions should have been good last year and the year before. It just seems like every year some people embellish how good the Lions will be. I do, however, feel that the new coaching staff will turn this franchise around and make a contender out of these guys. To be honest, I really believe these new coaches could prove to be one of the best in the league if they actually make a real team out of the Lions. But given the history of this franchise I'm still very skeptical that all of a sudden this team is finally going to make a huge turn around and become a powerhouse team like they should have been. Roy Williams is already proving he has the capabilities to become one of the best WR's in the game, but can he do it with a backup QB throwing to him his entire career? I doubt it. Just because the Lions got rid of Harrington and added a new coaching staff this year doesn't make them a great team again. Luckely they have a low first round draft pick where they can possibly draft an OK QB, but unlike the screw up with Harrington throwing him to the Lions den they should sit his a$$ on the bench and let him learn for a year or two. Or they could try and draft an offensive linemen and take care of their real problems. This team can definitely go places but I'm not counting on anything until I see it at this point. TheGrunt
How bout that offensive pass interference call in the SB? 1409483 We've already determined it was a bad call... by we I mean the entire nation except Steelers fans. Haha, this article even talks about how all teams are trying to keep those fans from "invading" their stadiums during Home games against the Steelers. Azazello1313
well, if nothing else, the lions are getting better simply by virtue of the fact that they're not getting worse nearly as fast as two of the other teams in their division (vikes and pack). TheGrunt
Interesting read. I respect the Steelers' fanbase; they just keep going and going and going. 1409523 True, they are at least standing behind their team but I still think it's foolish to ignore the bad calls. I mean, it won't change the outcome of the game by admitting a few wrong calls. The Steelers won the game, congrats to them, but it wasn't an interesting game because of how they won. Oh well. At least the Steelers have an OK team compared to the Lions. Although, I do think we'll see the Lions in a superbowl before ever seeing the Steelers back in it. But the Lions would somehow have to get just as lucky as the Steelers did to make it there!
Furd
Things are definetly starting to look a lot better in Detroit... 1409165 Why? Because some "no-nonsense" coach comes to town? Can you say Bobby Ross? I'm not even going mention that it's the preseason and the guy is like 60 years old but has no head coaching experience. The Vikings simply need a to prove that their changes will keep up with how they used to play during previous years. The Lions have the sad reputation of the past to make up for. The hiring of Marinello AND Martz could very well prove to be the key factor in the success of this team. This team definitely needed some discipline instilled in them but I just hope that take care of the O-line problems this team faces--and now the QB problem as well.
