Kiper-four round projections

ith the NFL draft two weeks away, the one hot spot in the first round remains with the New Orleans Saints and second overall pick. While I still have North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams going to New Orleans, the outlook of the first round could change significantly if the Saints trade the pick.

My first-round projections remain nearly the same, with the one newcomer being NC State defensive end Manny Lawson. Overshadowed by Williams at NC State, Lawson had a very good senior season then performed exceptionally well at the NFL scouting combine. Right now I am projecting the Jets will use their second first-round pick on Lawson, where he will be used as a pass-rushing defensive end/outside linebacker.

New this week are my projections for the second, third and fourth rounds. You will be surprised to see some players initially projected as first-round picks have slipped to the second round in recent weeks.

Second-Round Projections

48. Minnesota  Kellen Clemens, QB  Oregon

1417206

The Vikes brought in Cutler and Whitehurst for a look... I haven't heard any rumblings or rumors whatsoever about Clemens though. If Whitehurst is there for the Vikings' first pick of the Second Round, I'm betting they will take him.

I would much rather see Maroney instead of White.  He already have Shelton from last year that can fill that role and Maroney is a better back IMO.

Maroney looks like he's more talented than White, but he also had some injury problems in college. It could go either way.

I'm surprised that Kiper has Maroney still on the board at #30. I don't think the Colts will be that fortunate.

huh.  both nfl.com and espn show denver still with a 3rd rounder.  have they just not updated?  :D

1417340

Must not have updated their site yet. They traded their 3rd this year, picked up a fourth this year from a trade with Wash. last year and have an extra 4th as a compensatory pick.

I've not heard anything about Clemens and the Vikings either. Mostly its Cutler and Whitehurst with a touch of Croyle. I think Kiper just throws somewhat random stuff out there a lot of times to spark people's interest.

I agree completely. If Maroney or Williams weren't available then I'd rather see us take a S or LB maybe even a TE. We could pray for Addai in the 2nd or take someone like Wali Lundy in the 4th.

Maurice Drew will never fall to #69. Watch for Maurice to be a real surprise this year. The kid has strength, speed, hands and great character!

Seriously best value pick is the final one: #133  Omar Jacobs to Pittsburgh

1417599

:D

From Michael Modahl's column:

Positives:

I am not going to waste any time in saying that I absolutely love Jacobs and prefer him over Matt Leinart. Jacobs will be a better NFL quarterback. He has a huge arm, good vision, and great mobility. He has gotten the most out of the marginal talent that he has around him.

He threw for 41 touchdowns as a sophomore and ranked third nationally in pass efficiency. Has shattered all kinds of conference records while still a young quarterback. Also does very well in the classroom, a testament to his dedication on and off the field.

Negatives:

While I find very few aspects of his game that do not translate into NFL success, it must at least be mentioned that he has not played against consistent top-flight competition. Only games against Miami and Wisconsin this season would be considered as good, hard-nosed college football defenses.

Overview:

Considering that Jacobs completed 30-of-51 passes for a career-best 458 yards and five touchdowns against Wisconsin, it would be safe to say that that the competition argument is a moot point. Jacobs has done all that he can with the team and the players that surround him. He has all the tools necessary to be great in the NFL, even though the learning curve may take a little longer.
