However, theres talk about Buffalo drafting him if hes there at 8, so who knows. Id say to get him FOR SURE, Dalls would have to move to 6 or so. What they give up is a completely different story. IRVING, Texas - The Cowboys signed free agent Marcus Coleman on Tuesday, giving the club not only a 10-year veteran who has started 101 career games, but yet another player with ties to head coach Bill Parcells. Coleman, who started 11 games last year at free safety for the Houston Texans, played three seasons under Parcells with the New York Jets, where he spent the first six years of his career. Coleman, who has 516 tackles and 25 career interceptions, will likely compete for the starting job with Keith Davis, a restricted free agent who had signed an offer sheet with the Saints last week, only to see the Cowboys match the two-year deal worth about $3.1 million. But clearly, the Cowboys have upgraded a position that has been a weak spot for the last two seasons. Davis started 15 games last season at free safety, but even if he doesn't win the starting job once again, he will be used on special teams, where he led the team in tackles last season. The addition of Coleman, coupled with Davis re-signing, likely means the Cowboys won't enter the NFL Draft (April 29-30) with a strong need for a safety. Sure, it could still be a position of need, considering Coleman signed just a one-year deal and also turns 32 next month. Davis has only played the position for one season, and the Cowboys aren't exactly set for the future at strong safety with Roy Williams being in the last season of his contract, which voids the final two seasons. But the Cowboys likely won't have to trade up in the first round to acquire a player such as Texas' Michael Huff, who was among the 20 draft prospects who visited the Cowboys at Valley Ranch on Tuesday, and is expected to be a top-10 pick. Coleman, a fifth-round draft pick of the Jets in 1996, spent the first few years of his career bouncing back from safety to cornerback before making a full-time move to cornerback in 1999, Parcells' final year with the Jets. Coleman played all 16 games in each of the next two seasons at cornerback in New York before he was selected by the Houston Texans in the 2002 expansion draft. Coleman went to the Texans along with current Cowboys cornerback Aaron Glenn in 2002. He started 31 games in Houston at cornerback before the Texans moved him to free safety, where he started 23 games the last two years. But after starting the 11 first games last season, Coleman missed a game in early December before playing as a backup in nickel situations for the final four contests. An unrestricted free agent in the off-season, Coleman has not received a lot of attention from other clubs. But the Cowboys appear to be a good fit for Coleman, who should have a good chance to win the starting job at free safety. But it's likely his competition won't come from just Davis. Even if the Cowboys decide not to draft another safety, the club is expecting a good return from Justin Beriault, a sixth-round pick in 2005 who missed all of last year with a knee injury. Beriault had a good training camp and probably would've made the 53-man roster before a nagging injury led to a season-ending surgery. More of a strong safety, Beriault found himself around the football in his first two preseason games and might be able to win the free safety job. If nothing else, he could force his way onto the nickel defense. The Cowboys also return Willie Pile, an exclusive rights free agent who played in all 16 games last season, mostly as the nickel safety.
