Saints | Hilton re-signed

Mon, 24 Apr 2006 15:35:48 -0700

The New Orleans Saints have re-signed restricted free agent TE Zach Hilton (Saints) to an undisclosed contract.

On Saints Super Forum his dad says that it is the 1-year tender only ... which makes him a UFA next year ... and smacks of 1st day TE ...

Should be interesting. Sean Payton comes over from DAL where they used Witten a lot but the OC comes from NYJ where they wanted and never found a TE last year. I think Payton will have a bigger impact on the offense at least this year since OC Doug Marone was just a line coach last year.

Hard to say what this new coaching staff is thinking, but I'd doubt it. Still have Conwell and Meier, as well as Hilton, from last year, and signed Mark Campbell during free agency. Considering we've got only 2 first day picks right now, and with the holes on D, I'd say it's unlikely a TE gets picked on day 1 unless they grab more picks and/or trade down to a point, say 7 or 8, and they decide they can't pass on V Davis ...

I would trade out of the 2 spot and get several picks...if someone is willing to bite...

I bet they would if the Texans didn't take Bush...

but that's a pipe dream...

Hilton may be big but he's average at best. Lot's of depth at TE this year, so it makes a lot of sense.

Depends on who you ask DKF. He put up some good #'s last year when they finally let him play. He is very tall and very tough. Also remember that Brees may actually be able to throw a pass with touch, making him actually a target at the goaline.

Good enough for a one year contract. Like I said, average not bust.

One might argue that Brees contract was setup to be a one year deal as well (in an effort to minimize the injury risk he has).

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees signed a six-year contract with base salaries of $1.9 million (2006), $2.8 million (2007), $4.8 million (2008), $9.8 million (2009), $9.8 million (2010) and $9.8 million (2011).

The deal calls for the Saints to pay Brees about $60 million over the life of the contract, including a $10 million bonus up front and a $12 million option in the second year.

That's almost 15M he'll be due next year so if the Saints intend to keep him I think they'll surely try to restructure his contract.

Obviously Brees and Hilton's situations are not necessarily comparing apples to apples. But I just wanted to make the point that a guy only getting a one year deal doesn't mean he's only an average player.

Considering the QB situation over the last eight games, maybe a bit better than average ...

... The former North Carolina standout emerged as a reliable receiver last season, catching 35 passes for 396 yards and one touchdown. He played in 15 games and started eight, replacing Ernie Conwell in the lineup after the veteran was lost to a knee injury, and became a key target.

Over the final eight games of the season, Hilton posted 32 receptions for 373 yards. His 35 receptions for the season were the third-most on the New Orleans roster. Hilton had the fourth-most receptions among tight ends with eight or fewer starts in 2005. ...
