Sgt. Ryan
Geez, no wonder Carroll gets the top recruits. he has agents promising their parents houses, and now this. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2428059 LOS ANGELES -- USC officials are investigating whether an upscale apartment that wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett shared with former teammate Matt Leinart violated NCAA rules, according to a published report Sunday. Leinart's father, Bob, put the duo on the lease at the secured apartment complex downtown after Leinart moved out of his former residence near campus because he was constantly hounded by fans. Leinart -- the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback picked 10th by the Arizona Cardinals in Saturday's NFL draft -- and Jarrett each paid $650 a month for the apartment that cost $3,866 a month, according to the Los Angeles Times. Leinart's father paid the difference and said he's been told Jarrett might have to repay him about $10,000, the newspaper reported. University compliance officials are looking into whether the football program received an unfair advantage. While Bob Leinart would have been allowed to make up the difference for his son, he might not have been allowed to do so for another player. Tim Tessalone, USC's director of sports information, confirmed Sunday that an investigation involving Jarrett's living arrangement was under way. "At this point, we're still gathering information," Tessalone told The Associated Press, declining further comment. The investigation is the latest cloud over the Trojans football program. The Pac-10 is looking into the living arrangement of 2005 Heisman winner Reggie Bush's family, who lived in a house owned by a man who reportedly sought to market him while he played for USC last season. NCAA rules prohibit student-athletes and their families from receiving extra benefits from agents or their representatives.

thecerwin
The incident with Reggie's parents might have some validity but this one is a joke.
Coffeeman
The only real solution is to put all athletes in a big house built like a huge bubble, right in the middle of campus. With armed guards 24/7. No friends, parents, or parties allowed for 4-5 years. Nothing but classes, homework, sleep and sports, just to keep them in line. Of course, every one of them would have to be built to the exact same specs on every campus in the country, to avoid any unfair advantages. That brings up a point for me: why is it not considered an unfair advantage for one team to have state-of-the-art facilities, paid for by boosters, when another campus has leaky pipes, smelly carpet and a 80-year old stadium? Just curious...
Sgt. Ryan
Maybe Carroll should recruit better kids, instead of thugs and punks. Ah, cause he cant coach a lick and without superior talent regardless of the red flags, he would be out of a job. At least this way, he has to get caught first. Coffeeman
Coach recruits the best players he can, period. And if there is anything in their past that suggests trouble, it is human nature to think you can help turn a kid around. When you sit in the momma's living room and promise to take care of her 'baby boy', you're promising a lot. There is some potential danger in doing that, of course, and Carroll has proven he's willing to try. If anything, he can be accused of being too much of a nice guy and/or too much the optimist... That's the whole problem here....that Jarrett's expenses were being taken care of by someone else's parents? Or is there nefarious agents or something I'm missing? Please people. It sends the wrong impression about NCAA and America in general... 1448424[/snapback] Don't bring that into it. From what I've read about this (the above wire story), and please correct me if this is the wrong impression, Leinert's dad got a more anonymous and "secure" place for his kid to stay and his son brought along a roommate, friend, and teammate. Now if Leinart's dad was doing this at the behest of getting $10,000 returned to him from Jarret's pro career, or that the several thousands of dollars was coming from a third party, that's something to be looked at. Otherwise, this is all sour grapes. A shame that the Pac-10 so desperately has to eat their own. The University of Oregon should be abolished. darin3
Gimme a break. Jarrett paid a respectable amount of monthly rent each month. Granted he was living in a "luxury apartment", but so what. It would have been different if they BOUGHT him a pad, etc. But the guy was paying rent. The landlord - WHOEVER IT IS - can charge whatever amount of rent they want... anything from a penny to 10 large a month. Again, they charged him a fair amount for rent and he apparently paid it. This isn't a story. Move along.

So its not just being charged whatever, its Ill set you up, and you can pay me back later.

Leinart's father paid the difference and said he's been told Jarrett might have to repay him about $10,000, the newspaper reported. HE'S been told that he might have to repay the difference. There was no backroom deal set up. The elder Leinart is being told this by school officials.

Taking an apartment while someone else pays a portion fo your half is no different than a booster giving a player money. Both instances violates NCAA rules, thus the investigation. I didnt misread the story about the upcoming NCAA investigation. I didnt misread anything.
Sgt. Ryan
Looks like jarrett might have to sit next season. http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news?slug=ro...owire&type=lgns Update: Jarrett might have to sit out part of the season due to a sketchy financial situation concerning a luxury apartment he shared with Matt Leinart, the Los Angeles Times reports. Recommendation: An arrangement made with Leinart's father may be a violation of NCAA rules, forcing USC's best receiver to ride the bench. Edited May 4, 2006 by Sgt.
