so, now that they passed on leinart and cutler (and rightfully so, given that they have more glaring needs), is Walter the qb of the future in Oakland?

maybe brooks keeps the seat warm for a year?

I think that he will get his shot. seeing as the raiders probably won't be contending, my guess would be sometime this year.

I've been lit up for this in the past, and I'm sure I'll catch flack for it again, but I don't think Aaron Brooks is that bad of a QB. He endured some painful years in New Orleans, and now in the Oakland system, with solid WRs, a good line... I'm guessing he is going to have a solid season. IF... he can keep his head on straight and can take the good with the bad.

I agree. He can definitely go vertical, something Moss will like. If he can be coached out of making dumb mistakes under pressure he could be a good Raiders QB.

FF ? Sure, he'll probably have a nice year like he always does. Real football ? You can capitalize, bold, and underline the IF in your post, because the chances of that are slim and none. The guy simply self-destructs, and the first time he smiles after throwing an INT in the Black Hole, he'll likely be crucified.

Well hopefully there won't be as much pressure (physical, on the field; and psychological, off) on him.

Oakland's line is pretty solid. They ranked right around middle-of-the-pack (as did New Orleans) in giving up sacks. But NO didn't have Randy Moss and Jerry Porter. Plus, Robert Gallery is another year older and wiser.

I wouldn't be shocked if Brooks had a season akin to his 2003 season (59%, 3500 yards, 24 TDs, 8 INTs). I'd even bump up the yardage and perhaps the TDs. But perhaps bump the INTs up to 10 or 12. Add in ~300 rushing yards and 2-3 rushing TDs, too.

Go ahead and doubt the guy. :D

Saints fans have tried standing by him and he let them down so often they don't think it's possible for him to win anymore, but it could be the coaching staff that didn't hlp him enough. If he fails again we'll know if they are right.

I don't blame them. I suffered greatly with Favre, but he got better with better players. With bad players he went back to his gunslinger self last year.

I'll give him one more chance because he hasn't done it with multiple teams. If they can coach him to make better decisions he can succeed some. How much we will see later this year.

While you are adding things, add in a dozen lost fumbles to that 03 season as well. :D

I like Brooks and Walters.

Brooks will start this year at least, until he slips, in which case, Big Al will have the order sent to put Walters in, which is fine.

Thats granted Brooks out performes Walters in training camp... which may not happen.

Cordo has always been hard on Brooks, but I like him. I guess I won't understand until he QBs for my team though... :D

Not always, I probably took much longer than most Saint fans to give up on the guy. Being a UVa grad, I had those blinders on for a long time when it came to Brooks.

I hold no ill will, and hope AB works out for the Raiders, but unfortunately I think you will find out what we've been saying all too soon. Peace.

Thats ok with me, the sooner we can get Walters the starting job the better.

If you havn't seen it, you should probably watch the Andrew Walters' Highlights from his days at ASU as well as his preseason games for the Raiders.

Check out the sweet moves he shows during the 49ers game! :D

I'm personally very excited to get him in there.

Thanks for the knowledge, guys. I didn't even realize Brooks had any competition for the job other than Tui - had forgotten all about Walters. I was kinda looking at adding Brooks if he is still around in a later round of our dynasty draft (we're now in rd 6). I may still... but will think about adding Walter in the last rd or two.

After watching Walter at ASU, I thought he was a steal last year for a 3rd round pick.  I hope it is a true open competition in training camp because mark my words(Big John save this for the data banks) will be a stud QB before it is over. :D

Well if BJ is writing it down, he can write down that I said it two posts before you jumped on the bandwagon. :D

And I said it months ago. :D If there's a true competition, Walter will win it.

I already read that he looked a lot better than Brooks in the first minicamp.

How awkward is that for Brooks if he is beaten out in camp by a year 2 rook?

1447767[/snapback]

Well, apparently, Brooks came to Oakland only asking for a chance to compete. Shell has said that before -- he told Brooks at the very beginning that he'd have to beat out Walter to start and Brooks was fine with that. :D

I think either of them would be good fantasy QBs, but I just can't see Walter losing the competition to Brooks. Sure, Brooks has better mobility, but Walter has much more accuracy on his deep ball (and very similar arm strength to Brooks). The fact that Brooks has several years in the league still doesn't make him a good pure thrower, which is exactly what Walter is.

Hitch me to the Walter's bandwagon as well (although I was on it sometime last December after Collins failed us so miserably). I believe (and hope) Walter's wins the job this preseason. He has tons of potential and has a quality that QBs like Collins and Brooks may never have...the determination to win even when the odds are against you.

If you watched some of Walter's college games, and even his limited NFL preseason time last august, the kid has a certain competitve spirit...much like Gannon did...that should lead him to a bright future in Oakland.

Like some have already said here...Brooks has the potential to be a good Fantasy Football QB with the weapons the Raiders have (Moss/Porter/Jordan), but in terms of a real-world QB (like Kerry Collins) I dont believe he can be counted on when the going gets tough.

if the competition this summer is close, why not go with Walter (assuming there is the belief that he could be the future)?

the raiders can't be expected to compete in the AFC west this year. you might as well learn what you have in the kid, and if he is the guy, you build around him next April.

Ya know... people keep saying this. But the only for sure team is going to be Denver. Oakland, KC and SD all have question marks.

Chargers have a QB that has never started an NFL game before, with no talent at wideout, and Kansas City has a QB who isn't getting any younger, and a defense that has shown time and time again they don't know how to tackle. The only bright light for KC is Larry Johnson, who will carry them through the season.

I'm not saying the Raiders are better than these team, or they're going to be better than these teams, I'm just saying when you look at it on paper, it appears things are comming together the right way for Oakland. So don't rule them out just yet.

:D I am the last person that would defend the Silver and Black. :D But you are right on. Not only are there deficiencies in the two of the other teams in the AFC-W (SD: QB, WR; KC: D, WR), but look, the Raiders' D isn't really too terrible. Their linebacking will be excellent, and their front of the line improved and excelled last season. Young secondary, but hey, who knows. With Brooks slingin' the ball around to Moss and Porter and a more comfortable Jordan running the rock, this could easily be a 9-7 Raider team. And as a caveat, who knows if Denver will be a "for sure" team? They still run Jake Plummer out as their QB. Bell & Dayne as the RBs? Sure, the addition of Walker will be a big help... but I think the Broncos still have plenty of question marks, too. AFC-W will be a wide-open shootout, yet again.
