My first mock of the year

Had a mag draft tonight which, of course, is way too early since I am only now starting the process of rankings. Thought you might be interested in how the positions fell out. It was just 12 rounds and I was just using some VERY preliminary rankings I threw together for it but, of course, twice I had the player I wanted get taken before me. That was pretty funny. Wonder if I will want that player in a month...

Anyway, here are the positions taken and the picks. I can assure you that several of these picks will NOT resemble rankings at The Huddle. Some pretty big surprises to me even with hardly devoting time to rankings.

In case you are interested, I went with a pretty safe route on my picks since I need more time to be comfortable with some of the risk picks I would have made in a real draft later this summer. I think I did a fairly solid job all things considered but there is not much wow factor to my draft IMO. I like the team, but I did not make any reaches on potential sleepers really. Then again, it was just 12 rounds.

Standard scoring with reception points, no roster requirements since it was just the first 12 rounds of a mythical larger draft:

QB Bulger,Marc

QB Favre,Brett

RB Portis,Clinton

RB Jones,Julius

RB Lewis,Jamal

RB Anderson,Mike

TE Crumpler,Alge

WR Boldin,Anquan

WR Mason,Derrick

WR Smith,Jimmy

WR Bryant,Antonio

WR Wilford,Ernest

If this draft means anything, and maybe it does or doesn't, 2006 is all about RB early (of course) and yet there were some pretty great picks later on IMO. More than any recent year, the top QBs and top WRs are less consistent and clear to my thinking and observation.

Yes, it was WAY too early. And it was just a 12 round mock, but it was A DRAFT!

:D

Wow.  Gates sure put some distance between him and the others.

Thought that was too early and so did everyone else. He has a new QB this year so no way he should be drafted so much higher from the risk. Still the #1, but the TE's starting in the second like that? I don't much see it.

Be interesting to see how different this was from August drafts.

Vernon Davis was the 7th TE taken and that surprised me too. Alex Smith only threw one TD last year. Seems a major leap of faith for a rookie TE playing in his first season on a horrible team last year.

I said ealier in the year I would not be afraid to take Gates with the 1st pick of the 2nd round, I back off that. there is many good backs to be had this year and I would of passed on Gates with that pick. but I don't blame anyone for taking him that high , the separation from him and all the toher TE's is a major booster for whatever team he is on.

A TE in the 2nd round is ridiculous, even for Gates. He had a great season, but ranked #10 in points for WRs and TEs combined. Throw in a "rookie" QB and I'd rather take CJ or SS if going for a receiver.

Oh, was this a league where TE's and WR's are the same?

In leagues like this I won't draft him because he always goes to high,in leagues where a te is mandatory he is a beast.

Do you see Ronnie Brown as the 5th best RB? I ask because he's a likely keeper for me. I can pick up to 3 of the following: Larry Johnson (obviously), Larry Fitzgerald (probably), Ronnie Brown, and Carson Palmer. Leaning towards dumping Palmer of those 3.

I'm in a keeper league, so if things work out right I'll hopefully pick up Vernon Davis and have him for his entire career. Funny thing is, in our league we are allowed 6 keeper players a year, all of whom I would keep over Vernon Davis. But when that 7th round comes up... :D I could see myself taking this guy. :D

But then again, I might actually wait on him because I could probably see him available all the way into round 8 or 9 IMO. But then again, who knows. :D

I would dump Palmer on not worry about it no more.

I think Ronnie Brown is going to be hugh this year.

So do I which is why I was diappointed to see someone else having such a high opinion of him. Not sure I like him #5 best, but I like him alot to be sure.

See, I must be really lucky. I get to keep 6 players and choose from this list:

Alexander, Shaun

Jones,Kevin

Holt,Torry

Williams,Roy

Foster,De'shaun

Palmer,Carson

Hasselbeck,Matt

I think my only choice to make is either Hasselbeck (a great backup QB until Palmer get healthy) or De'shaun Foster (not sure exactly how he will do next year). Anyone else have some insight to help out?

Everyone is thinking he's going to be amazing this year... Is no one giving any thought to the other Auburn back? He did win the Rookie of the Year last year, and helped turn around a 5-11 team into a division champ.

As far as Tightends go, I was shocked to see Chris Cooley go that late.  He put together an extremley solid season last year and now has Al Saunders calling the shots on offense.

I don't know. Think of all the other players you would rather choose to have on your team before round 9. :D Maybe he won't be around that late (maybe) but I'd say this isn't far off from what is expected. Just my opinion though.

I watch for trends in the NFL. A few years back, when Fred Taylor was relevent, you knew that he would only play 12-14 games a season if you were lucky. I think you have to use this same kind of approach with DeShaun Foster... Probably more so. I'm not sure the panthers even have faith in him. Why would they select a rb in the second two years ago, and DeAngelo Williams in the first this year?

Maybe not that late, but behind all of those other tight ends. I think Cooley has moved up to the second tier, even before the signing of Al Saunders.

Very true. I'm more so leaning towards dropping DeShaun, I'd just hate to be 'the guy' who let go of a possible starter next year. But then again, I also don't think the Panthers have much faith in him starting the whole season. Plus, in my situation, Hasselbeck will be a great starter until Palmer gets healthy enough to start on my roster.
