No major fantasy value other than this should help Alex Smith a bit.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The San Francisco 49ers acquired a proven backup quarterback for Alex Smith, getting Trent Dilfer from the Cleveland Browns on Thursday in a trade for quarterback Ken Dorsey and an undisclosed 2007 draft pick.

Dilfer, who won a Super Bowl with Baltimore in 2001, will give the 49ers depth behind Smith, who struggled as a rookie last season after being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 draft.

"Trent was a player we had interest in last season," 49ers coach Mike Nolan said in a statement. "We were looking for a veteran quarterback with experience that could help mentor Alex Smith. Trent fits the bill on both counts and we are excited to have him with the 49ers."

Dilfer signed a four-year deal with the Browns last year after stints with the Baltimore Ravens and Seattle Seahawks. He went 4-7 as a Browns starter before losing the job to rookie Charlie Frye. Dilfer completed 59.8 percent of his passes last season for 2,321 yards, with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

"Trent Dilfer played an important role in the making over of our football team last year," Browns general manager Phil Savage said in a statement. "At this point, to add Ken Dorsey and to give Trent the opportunity to go back home to California is a win-win for all parties."

Dilfer, who played in college at Fresno State, has started 107 career games, throwing for 106 touchdowns and 117 interceptions. He made the Pro Bowl with Tampa Bay in 1997 after passing for 2,555 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Dorsey started 10 games in his three years in San Francisco, including three last season. He completed 48 of 90 passes for 481 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in 2005.

Cody Pickett is San Francisco's third-string quarterback and the team also drafted Michael Robinson in the fourth round last month. Robinson, a quarterback in college at Penn State, is expected to mostly be used as a running back, receiver or kick returner in San Francisco.

I think this is huge for Smith. Dilfer is such a good guy and definitely will help him out any way he can.

Dilfer = what is great about the NFL.

View my Kurt Warner Thread, and keep in mind that Warner was being interviewed by Dilfer, and he was agreeing and had all the same views Warner did.

Definetly a :D for Alex Smith and his career.

Don't get too excited just yet... Remember it was only last weekend that TE Superstar Vernon Davis started bawling when he found it he had to spend his career with the 9ers... :D

darn. Well, let him make a scene about it. As long as he continues to play football the way he has been, the Niners should hopefully improve, and maybe he'll learn how to hide his emotional side a little better.

Where did the 1980's-90's Niners go? :D

They still exist in the lore of the pre-salary cap days when a team could literally buy themselves better backups than most teams could afford for starters. Once the salary cap came around and DeBartolo closed his checkbook, they've turned back into the league pumpkin that they were in the 70's... :D

If I were the Niners seeing him tear up when he found out that his dreams were coming true would have made me like him even more. It shows that he has passion and heart. Davis is going to be a great one.

Sounds like we have opposite opinions here. Maybe we should start a poll and see what most think.....

SO what exactly is Cleveland getting out of this? a late round draft pick? Stoopid.

they did it just to get rid of a possible cancer in the locker room. however, dilfer is far from TO type cancer.. a 7th rounder was weak. but ken dorseys arm is even weaker. the browns have no depth at qb.. frye may not be a star, but it gets 10x worse for them if he goes down.

personally i never liked dilfer.. when they showed browns interviews on the local news he always seemed whiney. always crying about something.. im surprised the seahawks didnt offer an arm and a leg for dilfer after he rode their jocks on the nfl network super bowl week. he was crying for them even before the game started.

I like this as a Frye owner it shows Cleveland has put their trust in Frye. I also think Cleveland gets a much younger back up. I mean what is Dilfer 100 years old!!!! San fran gets someone to coach Smith and a proven vet. I think it's a win win for both. Frye really showed me more promise than the other Qb's last season (Campell did not see the field however) and Cleveland has made some good moves in the offseason(o-line) to help give Frye more time.
