The knock on him seems to be his ablity to stay healthy. Most are assuming that he will end up in some sort of RBBC. I am a glass half full guy and I'm thinking that at this point it is certainly his job to lose. Having said that there is competition in Joseph Addai for that job. I for one don't see Addai taking that job as a solo RB for INDY.

For Rhodes he will have to be impressive out of the gate otherwise he will lose touches. Worst case is that Addai looks great, (I don't see that) in camp and Rhodes loses lots of touches.

Addai will be sole starter by game 5.....

And many will draft this guy thinking that same thing. I will admit that I did not follow this guy in college but from all that I have read and from all the stats that I have looked back on, that is a very bold prediction, IMHO.

I think a lot of people that take Rhodes a little late, he should be there, may get a pretty good return on the draft buck.

I mean I could be wrong, but didn't the Colts just spend their first round pick on a RB?? Addai will get every opportunity to become the starter early in the season. If he blows it, Rhodes will get some carries. Either way, Addai is still very involved.

The Associated Press reports the Indianapolis Colts could feature two running backs during the 2006 season, with RB Dominic Rhodes heading into camp as the No. 1 back and RB Joseph Addai being brought into the offense quickly. Team president Bill Polian said, "He and Dominic will probably share time. At least, that's the way we see it now. You wouldn't expect a rookie to step into a team like this ... a team that has been winning big. You'd expect him to play some but not have to carry the whole load. We've been spoiled here. We see this as a two-man position now."

Fantasy Impact: This makes sense, but we think Addai could be getting the bulk of the carries by the end of the season.

The Indianapolis Colts used their first-round pick in 1999 on running back Edgerrin James, then nearly ran him into the ground. He logged 369 carries as a rookie, at the time the second-highest total in team history, then bumped his total to 387 the following season.

Joseph Addai, the player expected to help fill the void created by James' departure via free agency, shouldn't anticipate a similar withering workload.

The Colts' offense probably will remain a one-back attack in 2006, with a twist. Addai, the 30th overall pick in the NFL draft, is expected to share time with veteran Dominic Rhodes.

"At least that's the way we see it now,'' Colts president Bill Polian said Sunday. "You wouldn't expect a rookie to step right into a team like this. (With) a team that has been winning big, you'd expect him to play some, but not have to carry the whole load.''

The team expects most of its seven draft picks -- it regained the seventh rounder it sent to Tennessee last year -- to make the 53-player active roster, and contribute.

That starts with Addai, the draft pick on which the spotlight will shine brightest, and trickles down to Stanford cornerback T.J. Rushing. The latter was literally a late addition, acquired in the seventh round with the 238th overall pick. That was the pick the Colts sent to Tennessee last September for linebacker Rocky Calmus, and recovered Sunday at the cost of a sixth-round pick in next year's draft.

Also added during Sunday's final four rounds were offensive tackles Michael Toudouze of TCU and Charlie Johnson of Oklahoma State, and Howard safety Antoine Bethea.

"I think it's a good group in a lot of ways,'' coach Tony Dungy said. "We're always trying to increase our speed and toughness and I think we've done that.''

Georgia cornerback Tim Jennings, taken in the second round, and Bethea are considered physical, aggressive additions to the secondary. Jennings might replace Marlin Jackson, last year's first-round pick, as the nickel corner if Jackson is switched to safety. He, Bethea, Rushing and San Diego State linebacker Freddie Keiaho, the Colts' third-rounder, should upgrade special teams with their speed and athleticism. Rushing is an accomplished kick returner.

"We always build the team with the idea that the 53 that come out of training camp have to play and are going to play at some point during the season,'' Polian said. "What we're trying to build is a team that can be deep and has people that can step in and play when you have injuries.

"It's entirely feasible that every man who makes the team will play and contribute. Now, do they start? Do they play a lot of plays? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. But everybody plays a role.''

Addai's role figures to be more pronounced than his other draft mates. After all, the team used its first-round pick on him after allowing James to relocate to Arizona.

James made an immediate splash with the Colts. He became just the fifth player in NFL history to win the league rushing title in his first two years.

Addai's rookie goals are somewhat modest, although they're subject to change.

"Just to really go out there and get on the field and compete with everyone else,'' he said after arriving at the team's complex on Sunday. "Some players come in and get drafted early, but they don't really contribute to the team.

"I feel like I can contribute and help out. That's my whole goal, to get out there on the playing field.''

Colts fans have been accustomed to one running back being "the guy'' since 1994. That's when the team selected Marshall Faulk with the second overall pick in the draft. When Faulk and James were healthy, they were the running game.

That approach to the running game hasn't been shared by the majority of teams in the league.

"It's a two-man position in virtually every other city,'' Polian said. "We see this as a two-man position right now.''

Dungy had two quality backs at his disposal during much of his tenure with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- Warrick Dunn and Mike Alstott. He was able to keep each fresh, and alter a game plan if one running back's strengths were better suited to attacking an upcoming opponent.

I read that the Colts almost traded up to get Addai, before deciding he would probably be there at 30.

It's pretty safe to say they love the guy and it's also safe to say that Polian is a good judge of young RBs (James over Ricky, Thurman Thomas in the 2nd round).

see...I didn't know all of this...

I even forgot that he was there in 99...and on top of that, him being drafted before Ricky managed to slip my mind...

When I try to imagine the kind of season that Rhodes could have as a starter, I do not see too many 100+ yard games or too many TD's. I still think he could be a serviceable #2 RB, but I don't think he is the long-term answer for Indy, and I'd be frightened to have to use him as a #1 RB on any fantasy team.

edit to add: that of course only applies if he actually becomes the starter
