As I said in another thread on this same subject, he has the #s... but the NFL HOF, unlike the MLB HOF, is not all about #s. I don't think he makes it - and there is no comparison between him and Irvin, who has 3 SB rings (as a non-biased Dallas homer :D ). I don't think, as someone suggested, that it hurt Smith to be quiet and professional (as cp. to TO, Chad, Irvin, etc) -- but it hurts him that he played on largely less-than-stellar teams, and that he was not the kind of WR that struck fear in the hearts of opponents.

Extremely good, yes - and I'd have loved for him to have stayed in Dallas... but HOF, no. Close, but not quite.

More catches than any WR currently in the Hall?  (Well, that will change soon...).  But heck, if Art Monk is not in... Jimmy Smith?  I voted yes, btw... thinking Monk will eventually get in, and Smith may slip in at some point.

+1 one in a big way agree with everything you said but with the year he retired he should be a lock because not many big names hung up the cleats this year IMO.

Hate 2 say but may take 15 yrs for him to get in at this rate.

I agree, but in 15 years there may be alot more on the list with similar or better stats. Remember the rules have changed so CBs don't have the same freedoms they used to have when lining up against WRs. The NFL has become more pass-friendly.

I think Jimmy Smith DID strike fear into opponents.

I love the crap out of Smith, but Hall of Fame? I don't know, he just seems to be lacking some je nais sais qua.

I guess I think Henry Ellard belongs, and his numbers are comparable to Ellard's. By the same token, I STRONGLY believe his career was played at a time when offensive stats became highly inflated (check out the # of 1000 yd rushers compared to the 80s; 1000 yd WRs and 4000 yd passers are completely through the roof).

I'd guess that he gets put on the back burner until guys who are no-brainers from the same era, like Harrison, Moss, and Torry Holt are done to compare apples-to-apples.

If Jimmy Smith gets in, then Isaac Bruce is a stone cold, lead pipe lock to get in.

Bruce will get in (assuming he plays for another two or three seasons), but it probably won't be on the first ballot.

assuming bruce just has another 500 or so yard season and then retires, i don't see how he's jumps ahead of smith in the queue. i'd see them about even. bruce was one of those guys who benefitted ENORMOUSLY from the system he played in, especially 1999-2002 or so. the jags had some decent offenses for a few years there as well, but nothing like the 1999 rams. and statistically bruce still hasn't even caught jimmy yet in receptions or yards. i don't see how you put one guy "clearly" ahead of the other.

:D He's 9 yards behind.

He has 10 more touchdowns.

He has a higher YPC.

He won a Super Bowl.

He's not retired yet.

Um, yeah, I think that Bruce can manage 500 yards this season. :D

Consider also that Bruce has a 119/1781/13 season under his belt (with Chris freaking Miller throwing him the ball) and caught the winning TD in a Super Bowl. Right or wrong, the latter point means a lot in the eyes of voters.

Your Jimmy Smith knob-slobbing is laughable. If he hadn't been a complete pu$$y during the first three years of his career or quit while he was still productive, he might've actually had a chance. :D
