Never realized Ward was this vocal.

As pointed out by Seth Wickersham on his ESPN Blog, Hines Ward has been saying some interesting things late. Speaking of his Super Bowl MVP afterglow, he said, "I love the treatment. When you can walk in and see all the players from other teams, there's nothing they can say to you. You're on top that whole offseason. I've been all over, to L.A., to Vegas, to Miami and seen all the players from all over. Hey, Peyton Manning, I know you're great and all, but you don't have a ring. You can be all this, all world, but you don't have a ring. I have a ring. There's nothing you can say to me right now."

A few days later in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, he went down the Brett Favre path with this gem on rookies: "If [first-round pick Santonio Holmes] wants to be helped and asks, I'm more than willing," Ward told the P-G. "But for me to go out of the way to try to help somebody, I'm not going to do it. I did that before, and it didn't work."

Joe Bendel in an article in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review wrote Sunday that in a story in Sports Illustrated, Ward was quoted as saying the following about Cowher: "I don't have anything to say to him. After what he did to me, after how he treated me." The comments were made when Ward was asked about the No. 1 draft selections the Steelers have used on receivers during his nine-year tenure.

Yesterday, Ward addressed the Cowher quote.

"It was very off," Ward said. "It was something little that was out of my control. You ask me a question, I answer it and you should put it like I answered it. It wasn't a question we talked about. Coach Cowher and I don't have a problem."

He also said the Cowher quote was out of context, which I don't doubt.

I think he has been a little full of himself but that article is way out of context. I mean I listen to the guy on the radio each week and to be honest he always talks like he is a very confident person that does what is asked of him and knows that this the key to success.

He is going to have to learn, as will the rest of them, that when you are the world champions people want to get you to say something. The press is the press and they don't survive on feel good stories.

Heinz is still top dog in my book and I am one happy Steeler homer that we have this guy on our team.

gotta admit, menudo, if this was T.O. who said this stuff, people here would say, "well, just another example of a spolied, a-hole athlete." i've always liked hines a lot, but he DOES come off as a kind of a dink in these quotes.

I'll get bashed for trying to defend him, but, which quotes bother you ?

He is just commenting on how great it is to be a World Champion. Shouldn't have brought up Peyton Manning's name, but, other than that, I see absolutely no big deal with this quote. He's saying that right now they are on top.

"If [first-round pick Santonio Holmes] wants to be helped and asks, I'm more than willing," Ward told the P-G. "But for me to go out of the way to try to help somebody, I'm not going to do it. I did that before, and it didn't work."

If the whole article would have been posted and not just a snipet, you would see that he is referring to what happened with Plaxico Burress & Troy Edwards. He went out of his way to try to help them, but, they were #1 picks, and felt that they were too good to need help. He is just telling Holmes & Reed publicly that he is there to offer help, and all they have to do is ask.

"I don't have anything to say to him. After what he did to me, after how he treated me."

I saw Ward on Fox Sports Pittsburgh, and he was asked how he felt back when they drafted Edwards and Burress. Ward was putting up numbers, but, yet, Cowher still kept saying that they needed a 'true' #1 receiver. Ward had every right to be upset. I don't like him saying something like that in public about his coach at anytime, but, it is dated from years ago, not current.

It was very off," Ward said. "It was something little that was out of my control. You ask me a question, I answer it and you should put it like I answered it. It wasn't a question we talked about. Coach Cowher and I don't have a problem."

They took him out of context. He said in his interview, that he and Cowher now have a great relationship.

This is an attempt to try to bring someone down who is on top of the world right now. There is not a player in this league that plays harder every play than Hines Ward. There might be some that play as hard, but, none that play harder.

Cowers job is to put good teams on the field.

Ward's job is to catch balls.

Ward gets paid for his job. Cower gets paid for his.

they are both rather effective at what they do.

Why does Ward have every right to be upset? Have they stopped paying him for what he is supposed to do?

He is not upset now, but, back when he was putting up # 1 receivers numbers, and Cowher continued to say that they still needed a #1 receiver, it upset him, and I think he had good reason to be upset. Cowher has since said that he mis-valued Ward. It took a lot of Ward to get the recognition he now has, everyone, and especially Steelers fans were just waiting for the year when Burress was going to take over the #1 rule, it never happened.

Garbage. Who cares, if he is getting paid.

edited to add... I like Ward and all, but the above was him being a spoiled baby. He needs to focus on his job and not play amature GM. The team has people who evaluate needs.

If you are an accountant at your office and your boss hires another accountant, without giving you a pay decrease... saying, 'I have nothing to say to him. After what he did to me, after he treated me' is kinda silly....

This post by Menudo is right.

Media just trying to stir the pot.

Heck yeah all Superbowl Champion players engage in good natured ribbing. And Manning is the prime target for the ribbing.

Ward was not saying he won't help Holmes, just that he's not going to go out of his way after doing juts that with Plexiglass & Edwards.

The Cowher comment is really old & was taken waaaayyyy out of context.

Nothing to see here...move along.

There's nothing wrong with what Hines Ward said at all. Just because someone says something that you may not have, does not make him out of line. People have a right to get upset about what they want, no matter what they're being paid. This guy has and continues to be a total class act. If T.O. said some of the things he said, he would have been criticized, but that's his problem. When you've been an ass as long as he has, you lose a lot of benefit of doubt......
