cliaz
Deion Branch hasn't held out of anything yet, nor has he made any threats to do so, but some in New England are preparing for the worst. Despite Branch having already declared "my job is to finish my [current] contract," the Boston Herald speculates the receiver is unhappy with his situation. According to the Herald, Branch desires to be paid like a true No. 1 receiver – which would be around $6 million per year with guaranteed bonuses around $10 million, but the Patriots generally take a hard line with their players. According to "a source," the Herald suggests Branch is seeking guaranteed money of around $12 million. The problem with Branch is that; a) he's not a true No. 1 receiver, as evidenced by the fact he's never caught more than five touchdowns in a season and can be neutralized by double-teams and the Patriots generally play hardball with their players, and they almost always get their way. The signing of former Pats' No. 2 David Givens by the Titans to a contract that averages $4.8 million per year with an $8 million bonus may be a starting point, but if Branch opts to hold out of mini-camp in mid-June or training camp, this situation could get ugly. On the other hand, Branch is the quintessential team player, so it would be a surprise if he holds out. Also, Branch has never once indicated a holdout is eminent, so chalk this up as little more than speculation during a slow news period in the NFL.
