Typical small town wine selection story.

My wife had a bad day at work the other day, and so she wanted to go out to eat. I wanted to go to this place up on Oahe Resevior called Outpost Lodge. They have fantastic ribs, and their other food is good as well, but that is their specialty. Well we got there and it took five minutes to get menus. The waitress did not take our drink order at that time. My wife wanted wine, and by the glass it was box. So I said we could share a bottle, but I wanted white (I know it doesn't go with ribs, but I prefer chardonay), wife says fine she was having shrimp. Well there were two on the list one for $19 Beau Vista and a Pine Ridge for $32. I said get the cheaper one. They had a J. Lohr and Pepperwood that were similiar price. Well it comes and the wife couldn't read the date, she had her contacts in and needs new ones. She says it tastes okay, we weren't sure what to expect. I turned the bottle, and looked at the date, 1999. I couldn't believe it. We tried to make the best of it, but it was bad. We set it aside and ordered a drink, and the owner came over and asked us if the wine was bad. I said yes and it was 7 years old. He said that is what my liquor distributor sends him, I said a chardonay should be 2-3 years old. He said, Well I grew up in Napa and a good chardonay will age. I said fine, we will pay for it.

So a disappointing night was had and we will not be going back.

That sucks... I would never go back as well! He was right in saying that a GOOD Chardonnay will age. A $9-$11 bottle, retail, will usually never age well! I am pretty sure that even the Pine Ridge is well past it's prime!

That is why we ordered drinks. We figured that the other bottle would be just as bad.

I have a '99 les petite clos from Pine Ridge I just haven't gotten around to drinking. It's a chardonnay, but they only made like 200 cases, and it was a $60 bottle. I'm hoping it's still good.

yes. even if a wine CAN age well, that doesn't mean this bottle did.... plus anything can happen to kill a bottle....
