Vikings: Signings of Kasper, Davis add depth to receivers

Judd Zulgad, Star Tribune

Last update: June 13, 2006 – 11:29 PM

The Vikings added depth to their receiving corps on Tuesday when they signed former Iowa walk-on Kevin Kasper and ex-Marshall standout Josh Davis.

Kasper, 6-1, 197 pounds, has 24 receptions for 287 yards and three touchdowns in four NFL seasons with Denver, Seattle, Arizona and New England. The 28-year-old did not play in the NFL last season and was recently released by the Seahawks after signing in January. He was a member of the Super Bowl champion Patriots in 2004, playing in the final eight games of that season. Kasper went to camp with Houston last year but did not make the team.

A sixth-round draft choice by the Broncos in 2001, Kasper also could compete for a job on kick returns. He has returned 77 kicks for 1,869 yards (24.3 average) in his career. He had his best receiving season in 2002 when he caught 15 passes for 180 yards and three touchdowns in 13 games with the Cardinals.

Davis, 25, spent the final seven weeks of last season on the New Orleans Saints' practice squad after originally signing with the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted rookie free agent in April 2005.

The 6-1, 190-pound Davis, who attended the same college as former Vikings receiver Randy Moss, finished his career as the Mid-American Conference's all-time leading receiver with 306 catches for 3,889 yards and 23 touchdowns. His receiving total ranks second in NCAA history. Purdue's Taylor Stubblefield ended his career with 325 catches.

Childress is trying to create the success that Philly had here in Minnesota. Philly never had good receivers and when they finally found one, the team self destructed because of him.

These two signings are a non-issue. But it was the only news from Vikings HQ for the day. A receiver that couldn't play for Houston and another that was on a practice squad. But at least one did stay at a Holiday Inn Express because he played on Randy Moss' college team.

ahaha don't forget he had McMullen practicing as the #3 WR....

of course Troy Williamson is nursing an injury...but I still wonder if he has the size to make it as a WR...

players like SSmith have great tangibles....SMoss just has big play ability and not much else....

don't worry about the WR's, though...your OL and blocking will be outstanding....

:D From NFL.com: Williamson is 6-1 and 205 compared to Steve Smith 5-9 and 185...Just a tad bit bigger.

I didn't get that analogy either. Word coming out of the camps is to expect good things from Williamson this year. Why would they give Burleson the low tender that they did? We might see the answer to that soon enough.
