Saints news

From NFL Draft Blitz

Reggie Bush's people have been quiet so far this year but we hear they are planning to sit down with New Orleans contract negotiators soon and plan to ask for a fair market deal at about 8% above what number two pick in 2005, Ronnie Brown, received from Miami.

In other Saints new we hear the team may be shopping the much maligned backup quarterback Adrian McPherson. McPherson was a top prep player and a future star at FSU before being dismissed and resurfacing as the 2004 AFL Rookie of the Year. Minnesota is one team that is reportedly interested.

The Texans are going to trade for RB Michael Bennett, but we hear the Saints are in no hurry to trade Bennett and won't let him go for less than a fourth round pick.

I'm hoping the Saints use that 4th to trade for Donnie Edwards. Not sure what they want to get out of the McPherson deal, but I sure hope it's a CB.

Also thought this was another interesting tidbit.

ETC.: Coach Sean Payton surprised his team with a field trip Wednesday, dividing the roster into two groups and heading out to Folsom for paintball battles. Afterward, the coaches handed out awards for participation in the team's offseason program. The team will finish its organized team activities today before breaking for the next month.
Nothing like this ever happened with Haslett around. His idea of bonding with the team seemed to be hanging out at the clubs & hitting on college girls along with some of the players. Payton has quickly earned a rep for being a strict no-nonsense guy in practice, but it's great to see he's rewarding the players for their efforts & making a real attempt to bring the team together. Any other coaches do something like this for his players?

I wish the Raiders would wake up and realize they need a backup RB better than Fargas or Crockett. Jordan should be solid, but like last year, he could miss a few games due to injury....plus they need a change of pace speed back that would compliment Jordan's run you over between the Tackles style.

A Jordan/Bennett backfield would be a nice duo...

Good stuff Rajn.

I am not necessarily sure Edwards is more of a need than Bennett, especially if Deuce really isn't going to be back healthy this year. And I don' t think Reggie is ready for an "every-down" season. We do still have Stecker though...

I find this hard to believe. Bush's people early on were posturing that not only should Bush be paid as #1 pick, but that he should have a 20% increase over Alex Smith's #1 contract from last year.

If so, and if NO follows form for signing rookies with a standard 10% increase over the previous year's slotted pick, the two sides appear to be from the onset to be about $6M apart.

If Bush is now looking at an 8% increase over Brown's contract, that would be a significant - no, make that gigantic - decrease in what they have been posturing for from the beginning. That would mean to me that they feel they have lost a huge amount of leverage, and if so, I'd wonder why they feel they have lost so much bargaining power (possible impending IRS or FBI indictments in the New Era deal, perhaps, and the resulting loss of marketing power as well for Bush?).

My thoughts exactly.

Bush has said he will not be a hold out.

I'm thinking this is about Bush himself telling his agents what he wants vs the agents deciding what kind of commission they want.

Not basing this on anything I've read or heard, just speculating. :D

can the Saints afford to pay Bush what he wants?

I find it hard to believe that this is a serious question, but if it is, why wouldn't they be able to afford him ?? :D

re: McPherson. I think the operative word in the article is may. They just let Bruce Eugene go today, and Payton has said numeroust times that AMac is his project and how happy they are with his work ethic. Perhaps a team or two called Loomis and inquired, but I find it very hard to believe they are actively shopping him...

Is there a reason why they are trading McPherson or just that they don't need him really?

That was the reason I said I wasn't sure what they would want to get out of that trade. If anything it would have to be for a position of need somewhere else. But I would hate going into the season with Bouman & Jamie Martin as our backups. :D

Seems to me whether AMac is on the team or not Bouman and/or more likely Martin is the backup ...

The Vikings let Bennett go for nothing and the Saints are going to get a 4th round pick for him? Uh, ok. :D

:D Not sure why you seem to think it farfetched, as it's a totally different set of circumstances, and will be especially so when the first starting RB goes down in someone's training camp.

His value decreases the more he plays. Right now he isn't injured...yet.

Point is, the Vikings weren't going to get anything for him considering he was a UFA.
