Has anyone used blind bidding/conditional bidding on MFL?

Is anyone thinking of using it?

It seems like a fairly new option.

Comments? Suggestions?

We used it in Huddlers' Refuge last year and it worked pretty well. Of course, you have to make sure everybody understands exactly how it works, but I liked it.

It looks fairly simple. The only part that looks hard to control is:

If team A wants player Z as a first priority, in the first round and

wants player X in the second round and

Team B bids on player X in the first round but

bids lower that team 1 did in round 2,

Who would get player X?

Seems like team 2 would get it, as round one would be over and I think MFL doesn't look at all rounds collectively inclusive of the bid. Yes/No?

We have used blind bid at mfl.com for 3 years now.

Very easy to use. There are no rounds for awarding players. The team with the highest bid for a player gets the player, regardless of priority.

It's easily the most fair FA system there is. Poor teams don't get rewarded for being crappy, and all teams have equal opportunity to manage their FAs through the bidding system, plus you don't get teams getting lucky by being on top of the priority list when a stud RB gets hurt & the backup suddenly becomes an impact FF player.

As the commish, what you'll have to do each week is sort the blind bids when owners have tied for the bid. We use worst record gets priority in the event of a tie.

You can set your imaginary FA purse for each team at any amount you want at the site. We use a $50 purse with whole dollar bids only and a minimum $1 bid per player. The larger the purse you set, the less opportunity for ties, but it also may allow teams to get players for very little FA $$$. I see a lot of leagues use a $100 FA purse with whole dollar bids & a $2 minimum.

Our blind bid runs from Tuesday morning through Wednesday night, with players awarded in blind bid Thursday morning. The from Thursday morning to the start of that week's first game, it's first come, first serve. mfl.com allows for this setup each week. That allows teams that miss out on players that they bid on to pick up FCFS FAs to fill holes after the bid period. The comment box in the bottom also allows for conditional bids - ie, if an owner blind bids on 3 RBs in a week, but only wants 1 of the 3. They will tell you their priority, and as soon as they get the player that they win in BB, you can eliminate their other conditional bids.

As a commish it takes me 10 minutes a week, give or take, to sort out ties & conditional bids each week, and then award players.

We don't allow trading or exchange of FA dollars and the FA purse goes back to $50 each year - no carry over to the next season. I have seen leagues that do allow trading/exchange of FA $$$, as well as carry over top a subsequent year, which mfl.com will also accomodate.

It really enhances the team management experience for owners, and allows them to determine how important any FA is to them by letting them set their own bids to win players.

The system is very easy to use for owners also. Here's the instructions I posted today for our 1st offseason FA period this weekend in our dynasty league:

*************************************************

Click on the homepage & log in.

Under FOR OWNERS click on the WAIVERS button, and click on your franchise button on the right side.

Press GO

---------------------------------

Select the player you want from the scroll list, or select one of your assigned unrostered players (that would be any unrostered player whose last name starts with a T for you) if you want to select a UDFA.

Place the bid amount in whole dollars that you want to bid for that player in the amount box. You have a $50 FA purse to work with.

Fill in the comment box below with any specific instructions (ie - if you only want 1 player at a certain position but you are bidding on multiple players to make sure you get at least one of them; who the nonrostered FA is a proxy for for UDFAs, etc)

Repeat as many times as necessary to place bids on all the FAs that you want to bid on. When you place a bid, it is not locked in and you can change it by repeating the process as many times as you would like until the end of the waiver period.

The waivers will be close Monday at 8:00 PM EST, and waivers will be run either Monday night or Tuesday morning.

You do not have to drop players or place them on your taxi squad to reach a roster of 60 until after waivers are awarded. I would strongly suggest not dropping any players until you see which FAs - if any - you won in blind bid.

*****************************************************************

PM me if you don't want to discuss here & I'll do what I can to assist or answer any questions. Questions here might be better, since others can learn also.

I wouldn't consider money alone the fairest system there is. I would like to see a combintion of record and bid, but being difficult to use bids are the best we have for now. I would like to see improvements to mirror the NFL when possible.

That is incorrect if useing conditional bidd. They do use rounds. Teams get 1 player per roundbased on high bid in that round. So in the original post the lower bid in round 1 would get the player over the higher bid in round 2.

Well, Ray, being right in the middle of a current offseason BB FA session in a dynasty league that I commish, I can state with absolute certainty that we do not have any rounds for bidding on players. Perhaps your set up is different than ours.

I don't really understand having rounds if a league is using blind bidding for free agents - unless you are talking about playing in an auction league that is currently populating its rosters. But auction bidding for players is completely different than blind bids for FAs, and I assume the author knew when he asked a question about blind bids for FAs that he was talking about blind bidding for FAs.
