Cowboys | Owens's celebration may have been inspired by team chaplain

Thu, 13 Jul 2006 17:45:47 -0700

Jean-Jacques Taylor, of the Dallas Morning News, reports former San Francisco 49ers receivers coach George Stewart wants to set the record straight on WR Terrell Owens' celebratory dance during the 2000 season at Texas Stadium. The Dallas Cowboys wide receiver was playing for the 49ers back then. Stewart said team chaplain Earl Smith might have played a role in the celebration. The day before the game, the 49ers had just completed a walk-through practice at Texas Stadium. "The chaplain began talking about Roger Staubach and how the Cowboys were God's Team and America's Team," Stewart said. "Then he asked Terrell if he knew why there was a hole in the roof. He didn't, so the chaplain told him that it was so God could look down on the Cowboys. "He said, 'If you score, go to the star and let God see you. Look up to the sky and praise God.' "If you'll look at a replay, you'll see that he runs to the star, looks right up, praises God and then leaves the field." WR J.J. Stokes said the chaplain asked him to go to the star as well if he scored a touchdown. The next day, the 49ers suspended Owens for a week. That essentially ended his relationship with head coach Steve Mariucci because he thought the coach should have supported him.

This is why I've basically defended Owens in most of his "perceived" selfish acts. People tend to believe what they read especially if the majority say so. This story proves that TO's character is much better than perceived. The fact that TO never argued or tried to explain why he did what he did is impressive.

I don't see how you can say that because TO never argued or tried to explain why he did what he did is impressive. TO is one of the most selfish players in the league. Albeit, he may be misunderstood, but come on! After his antic's in Philly, he proved that what everyone was saying about him is true.

I'm a huge TO fan. I love the way he plays, the way he practices. Just don't like the way he conducts himself. DMD is bang on, that this at best demonstrates poor judgement...

Wow. You guys believe that crock? Football is a multi-billion dollar entertainment industry. And, apparently, someone thinks Cowboys fans are really stupid and gullible. My money is on Drew. He owes him.

No way. No way in hell. I guess TO was looking up at Vishnu when he did it on the little star. And when he pulled out the Sharpie, he was really signing a pledge of money to help all the orphans in Dallas.

This sounds like a load of Dallas-revisionist crap. Dallas fans are trying to find reasons to pretend that act was OK, so now they wanna paint it as a misunderstood, praise to god moment. GTF out of here. All TO was praising was himself, and you Dallas fans excusing that act should be ashamed of yourselves.

The man sh1t in your house, now you're welcoming back for dinner.

Didn't he go to the star twice?

Went to the big star first, and didn't Roy Williams or someone come out and tackle him? Not sure, but after that he scored again and went to the little star in the back of the endzone.

Some are saying Reggie Bush is the next coming of Christ, in cleats.

I think it makes complete sense that we hear about this now. Come on, Cowboy fans, he's not that bad of a guy. Love him. He loves God. The world is a beautiful and happy place.

Yeah, that T.O. - what a guy. Garcia deserved being called gay - it was his fault for acting so gay. BAL deserved to be screwed over by Owens after he agreed to play for them - they do have a murder accomplice at MLB, after all. McNabb deserved to be thrown under the bus - how stupid are those Mama McNabb Chunky Soup commercials, and it should have been Mama Owens, besides. PHI deserved to get screwed for an entire season - after all, they didn't use their entire cap number as a basis for Owens' salary and they hurt Owens' feelings besides, plus Andy Reid looks so stupid in those spandex shorts, for Pete's sake.

I hope my daughters marry guys with such an unimpeachable characters.

:D That was the funniest part of the whole story!

And then God quickly answered TO's prayer by sending a Cowboy to deliver His message for Him.

God bless George Teague.
