Agent Carl Poston has been suspended by the NFL Players Association for two years because it contends he has used "bad faith efforts to delay, frustrate and undermine" a hearing about his role in a contract dispute between linebacker LaVar Arrington and the Washington Redskins.

HAPPY DAY, HAPPY DAY!!!!

Sorry for my ignorance on this topic. But why was he suspended?

LaVar Arrington signed a contract a couple years back with the Redskins that he said wasn't the one he agreed to. Poston, his agent, claimed the Redskins pulled a fast one on the player and slipped a different piece of paper to sign.

Essentially, the NFLPA is saying the agent didn't read the contract, and it cost his player $6.5 million.

Hilarious! This kind of thing doesn't happen very often, especially to an agent of Poston's stature. It's kinda gratifying, though, since the Postons had a bit of a "reputation" for being slightly shady, stubborn asses.

Are the shady? Or do they buck the system a bit? They don't handle a lot of skill position type players. Mostly LBs, O & D linemen, and DBs. They ask for a lot of $$$ for these guys to spread the wealth around from the QBs and the RBs, and are notorious for playing hardball with teams.

The NFLPA has a set of rules that agents must comply with when in negotiations, but the Postons reportedly disregard these rules on a frequent and flagrant basis. They have even petitioned Congress to look into the NFLPA and the legalities of their rules for player reps.

:D Yeah, that's really all I meant. They don't like the rules, so they don't have a problem "bending" them. I would say that's a little "shady." Either they get the rules changed or they should follow them.

True.

By 'shady' I thought you might be implying they're money launderers like some of the smaller-time player agents.

I figure you can ignore the rules, but if you're petitioning Congress to do something about them, that appears to at least be somewhat above-board. :D

Well then he is an idiot. His agent loses him $6.5M because they don't read the contract and he keeps them around?

Or starts a lady dog fest with the team over the whole matter and gets benched as a result, then opts to buy his way out of the deal in the off-season.

Obviously, Poston f'd up and the NFLPA is getting him for it. However, Arrington's actions and loyalties to the Postons indicate to me the likelihood that the Redskins did in fact hoodwink him.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't it the agent's job to make sure the player doesn't get "hoodwinked" by the team? Isn't that the whole reason for having an agent?

Yep, but just because a player stays loyal to his agent doesn't necessarily make him an idiot. Especially considering the Redskins apparent actions in all this.

Yeah, BUT...the team also bears some good-faith responsibility to negotiate an honest deal with their core players. If the Redskins did purposefully fool Arrington and his agents with an unspoken alteration to the contract, then they're even shadier than the Postons.

I tend to believe that it was just a big miscommunication. I can't believe a NFL front office would do something like that intentionally. If the agent DID catch it -- as they should -- they'd risk that player becoming eternally pissed and, possibly, refusing to play for their team again. :D
