BigTen
Thought some of this was interesting. Here is some of todays info. I will post more as I see/get it... Tom Kowalski's first training camp practice chat transcript Friday, July 28, 2006 RoadKing: Tom - Is Charles working as the 2nd reciever, or with the 2nd team, and how does he look? TomKowalski: ROGERS IS WORKING WITH THE SECOND UNIT ... Venkmen: what is the contract status with Sims? TomKowalski: NOTHING NEW ON THE CONTRACT STATUS ... THEY HOPE BULLOCKS WILL BE AT THE AFTERNOON PRACTICE ... NOTHING NEW ON SIMS ... jreffy: Killer, how "slightly overweight" was BMW? TomKowalski: MIKE WILLIAMS WAS ONLY A FEW POUNDS OVERWEIGHT ... NOT SURE OF THE NUMBER ... AND NOT SURE ABOUT SHAUN ROGERS ChicagoLion: Tom, what are the chances of Charles Rogers passing up Bradford and running with the first team by the end of camp? Also, could we see Charles in the slot at all? TomKowalski: THEY DIDN'T RUN ANY THREE-WIDE STUFF TODAY SO I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE PROSPECTS WOULD BE OF ROGERS IN THE SLOT ... WE'LL HAVE TO SEE ... HE HASN'T ARRIVED YET, BUT HE'S GETTING THERE ... Baxter: Tom - How did the O Line look? TomKowalski: THE O LINE LOOKED PRETTY GOOD AT TIMES ... THE DEFENSE GENERALLY STARTS QUICKER, BUT KJ HAD SOME HOLES DURING THE 9-ON-7 DRILLS .. JoJo Dancer: Tom - How did Calhoun look? TomKowalski: CALHOUN RAN WITH THE SECOND UNIT IN 9-ON-7 AND TEAM DRILLS ... Venkmen: Martz was criticized in St. Louis for not running the ball enough. Will this be a problem here too? TomKowalski: THE LIONS ARE GOING TO RUN THE BALL -- THAT'S GOING TO BE A MARINELLI ORDER ... Tee: Tom, how did Kitna look? TomKowalski: KITNA LOOKED FINE ... BETTER THAN THE OTHER TWO ... Baxter: Tom - Was Drummond in with the second unit? TomKowalski: DRUMMOND AND FURRY WERE WITH THE NO. 3 UNIT ... ROGERS AND MARTINEZ WERE NO. 2 ... AGAIN, THEY DIDN'T DO ANY THREE-WIDE STUFF TODAY ... rchase: starting d-line? TomKowalski: THE D LINE IS THE SAME AS LAST YEAR --- JUST CODY IN FOR WILKINSON ... rchase: ok cool and the other side of Bly is? TomKowalski: BRYANT HAD A GOOD DAY ... BLY DID TOO ... mtn lion: Tom - since the D-line is the same as last year then Edwards was starting at end? TomKowalski: EDWARDS IS STILL THE BACKUP END ... BUT HE'LL GET A TON OF PLAYING TIME ... mikkey76: think they will really cut crog or BMW? TomKowalski: ROGERS LOOKS VERY PROMISING ... AND WILLIAMS LOOKED PRETTY GOOD TODAY, TOO ... THEY HAVE TO KEEP IT UP ... /b] Baxter: Tom - What;s up with Lehman's knee/ankle? What's taking so long? TomKowalski: LEHMAN HAS A FOOT INJURY ... IT'S AN INJURY THEY KNEW WAS GOING TO TAKE A LONG TIME TO HEAL ... THEY SAID THEY KNEW IT WOULD EVEN BE THIS LONG, BUT I'M NOT SO SURE ... AGAIN, BAILEY IS CLOSE AND COULD BE BACK ANY DAY ... Argus: TOM--good question about Sledge--usage normal or less? TomKowalski: SLEDGE IS THE STARTING FB AND, HE WAS USED A LOT IN THE 9-ON-7 RUNNING DRILLS, BUT YOU'D EXPECT THAT ... VALion: Do you think Bryant could lose his starting job this year? TomKowalski: I DON'T SEE BRYANT LOSING HIS STARTING JOB ... THOSE OTHER GUYS JUST HAVEN'T STEPPED UP YET ... THAT MAY CHANGE DURING CAMP BUT I HAVEN'T SEEN ANY SERIOUS THREATS YET ... valions: Tom, who lined up with the first unit OL? TomKowalski: FIRST UNIT ... BACKUS, VERBA, RAIOLA, WOODY AND TUCKER ... Garth: has there been any mention recently of moving BMW to Tight End? TomKowalski: MIKE WILLIAMS WILL NEVER -- EVER -- BE A TIGHT END ... D The Great: is alex lewis healthy TomKowalski: ALEX LEWIS HAD AN IMPRESSIVE PICK TODAY ... MCCOWN KINDA TELEGRAPHED IT ACROSS THE MIDDLE, BUT LEWIS RAN THROUGH TRAFFIC AND CAUGHT IT IN FULL STRIDE ... woody: Tom-Did any players seem to be upset or angry about the practice in pads? TomKowalski: NO, THE PLAYERS WERE FINE WITH PRACTICING IN PADS ... AGAIN, WAIT UNTIL THE 8TH OR 9TH STRAIGHT DAY OF IT ... OR EVEN THE FOURTH ... Baxter: Tom - Is FitzSimmons safe from being cut since he's a special team all pro? TomKowalski: FITZSIMMONS WILL DEFINITELY MAKE THE TEAM ... mx83pete: Tom... Speaking of McCown, how heavy is Orlovsky breathing down his neck??? TomKowalski: I THINK MCCOWN WILL STAY NO. 2 GOING INTO THE SEASON BECAUSE OF HIS EXPERIENCE ... BUT, IF SOMETIHNG HAPPENS TO KITNA AND MCCOWN ISN'T GETTING THE JOB DONE, I DON'T THINK THEY'RE AFRAID TO GO WITH ORLOVSKY ... cruzer: Tom, how did Jones look running the ball TomKowalski: KJ LOOKS VERY, VERY IMPRESSIVE ... RUNNING AND RECEIVNG ... rchase: Pinner has to know the writing is on the wall how did he look? TomKowalski: PINNER DIDN'T GET MANY REPS, BUT HE LOOKED GOOD ... IF HE KEEPS THAT UP, IT'S GOING TO BE A BATTLE BETWEEN HIM AND ARLEN HARRIS ... PINNER HAS TO SHOW SOME VERSATILITY AS A RECEIVER, TOO ... PontiacLion: You mean Kitna doesn't look at one WR like Joey did? TomKowalski: YOU DO SEE ALL THREE QBS LOOKING ALL OVER THE FIELD ... THEY DON'T HONE IN ON ONE GUY .... MCCOWN'S INT TO LEWIS WAS ONE OF THE RARE EXCEPTIONS ... Baxter: Tom - Was Marinelli with the D line or all over the place? TomKowalski: YES, MARINELLI SPENT MOST OF HIS TIME WITH THE DEF, ESPECIALLY THE D LINE ... NorthDakota: Is it safe to now declare that our play calling will be varied and intelligent? Last year every armchair QB knew what plays the Lions were going to run. TomKowalski: YES, THE PLAYCALLING WILL BE MUCH, MUCH DIFFERENT ... slip: Will the play calling also include QB audibles? TomKowalski: NO AUDIBLES ... NorthDakota: i know it is the first of many practices, but how is the blitzing style of henderson meshing with the tampa two???? TomKowalski: IT'S GOING TO BE INTERESTING TO SEE HOW MUCH BLITZING MARINELLI DOES OUT OF THE TAMPA TWO ... MY FEELING IS THAT HE HAS SUCH A STRONG RESPECT FOR HENDERSON THAT HE'LL PROBABLY DO MORE THAN HE ORIGINALLY PLANNED ... AND, OF COURSE, IF IT WORKS, THEY'LL KEEP DOING IT ... kannibul: Martz and Marinelli working offense, or only Martz? TomKowalski: MARTZ WILL HANDLE THE MAJORITY OF THE OFFENSIVE DRILLS ... AGAIN, THESE GUYS DO A LOT OF TEAM DRILLS SO MARINELLI IS INVOLVED THERE TOO ... LegalizeIt: Tom is it Martz or Marinelli that will make the call on pinner? TomKowalski: MARINELLI AND MILLEN WILL MAKE THE FINAL CUTS ... BUT OBVIOUSLY, MARTZ WILL HAVE A STRONG SAY IN THE OFFENSIVE GUYS ... kannibul: Does our OLINE look more adept at picking up the blitz (does our new OLINE Coach have a better grasp than our old)? TomKowalski: THEY HAVEN'T DONE ANY BLITZ DRILLS YET, BUT THAT'S SOMETHING THATWILL BE NOTEWORTHY ... Baxter: Tom - THe players grossly out of shape still? TomKowalski: THEY'RE STILL NOT CLOSE TO BEING IN THE KIND OF SHAPE THE COACHES WANT ... TomKowalski: FELLAS, GUESS WHAT TIME IT IS?
peepinmofo
Im most intrigued with CRog. He was a stud in college, and hes been hurt the past 2 years. Everyone is so high on Roy Williams this year, so if they have to double team Roy, CRog would be open, or so you would think.... Unless he breaks his collar bone again! samurai30
Tom Kowalski's first training camp practice chat transcript Friday, July 28, 2006 cruzer: Tom, how did Jones look running the ball TomKowalski: KJ LOOKS VERY, VERY IMPRESSIVE ... RUNNING AND RECEIVNG ... Although only training camp...good to hear about KJ. Maybe he'll shut up all those naysayers about how he'll only be a 1st and 2nd down back. Can't wait to see him in real action......this guy has talent
Big John
umm...1:45 EST. (or is it EDT?) EDT. It is still daylight-savings time (what the "D" stands for) and not standard time (what the "S" stands for).
peepinmofo
EDT. It is still daylight-savings time (what the "D" stands for) and not standard time (what the "S" stands for). heh. I knew what it stood for, just wasnt sure which was in affect (or is it effect? )
TheGrunt
EDT. It is still daylight-savings time (what the "D" stands for) and not standard time (what the "S" stands for). I love that. Anytime anyone ever even thinks about writing some sort of question ANYWHERE in the huddle, Big John is most likely already writing up the correct answer before hand. It's like Big John is The Huddles EASY Button (comparable to Staples, however, Big John knows more). There should be a 'Big John' Clickable Smiley, so that he can quickly scroll through a Post and notice right away that there is someone out there with a question. Big Score 1
The Rogers info was good, but I was most interested in the following two quotes; Venkmen: Martz was criticized in St. Louis for not running the ball enough. Will this be a problem here too? TomKowalski: THE LIONS ARE GOING TO RUN THE BALL -- THAT'S GOING TO BE A MARINELLI ORDER ... cruzer: Tom, how did Jones look running the ball TomKowalski: KJ LOOKS VERY, VERY IMPRESSIVE ... RUNNING AND RECEIVNG ... I had kinda figured Marinelli was going to put his foot down and corral Martz's pass happy tendencies. Good to see confirmation. Good to see KJ looking good at both running and catching. EDIT: Appreciate the info BigTen Edited July 28, 2006 by Big Score
Avernus
I can feel the lure.....me wanting to put KJ in my top 15.....is he going to be good?...or like last year?...my goodness... he's the biggest enigma of the 1st 2 rounds...
BigTen
Here is a link to some interesting video footage. I liked what Roy Williams had to say about Kitna and what he said about Harrington not having the command and respect that Kitna gets/has. http://www.mlive.com/lions/

lkirc
Nice Info. Thanks. Long suffering Lions fans don't get to hear much positive news. I feel good about the coaching staff this year. Getting Martz was a coup.

thecerwin
Thanks for the update. Lions Fever! Believe It! No thanks. I'll pass on the Lions this year. I bought in for the last three years thinking they would blow up with an offensive powerhouse. I won't put anymore stake toward the lions until I see something good. Seeing something good is much different than listening to training camp propaganda.
Swiss Cheezhead
The Rogers info was good, but I was most interested in the following two quotes; I had kinda figured Marinelli was going to put his foot down and corral Martz's pass happy tendencies. Good to see confirmation. I think Marinelli will certainly impose his will somewhat, but other than an initial philosophical discussion, I doubt he'll really have to get on Martz's case about running the ball more. I've said this before: Martz probably doesn't want to remain a OC for the rest of his career. He wants another head coaching gig. So, knowing that, what's the ONE pockmark EVERYBODY believes Martz has? NOT RUNNING THE BALL ENOUGH. GMs believe it, owners believe it, players believe it, and even WE believe it. I don't think I'm going out on a limb here, but I seriously doubt Martz is oblivious to all of that. If he wants another HC job, he already knows, without Marinelli's insistence, that he'll have to run a more balanced offense. The Lions will hand off to KJ as many times as he can handle.
