Chiefs Camp Buzz

The Kansas City Star

What you need to know on offense

Any questions on whether Larry Johnson could stay motivated after earning the No. 1 job are officially over. The Chiefs kept him busy, catching passes out of the backfield and busting loose for a couple of big runs. But his most impressive play of the day came on a pass that he didn’t catch. It popped out of his hands and into the clutches of Kendrell Bell. Johnson, in one motion, slapped the ball out of Bell’s hands and averted the interception. … Eddie Kennison’s 33-year-old legs still had a burst when he shook off Patrick Surtain and Sammy Knight for a long catch.

What you need to know on defense

Bell, one of the most maligned players on defense in 2005, looked impressive on his first day. He perfectly covered a pass intended for Tony Gonzalez and appears to be catching on in his second season in Gunther Cunningham’s system. … Benny Sapp is back after offseason surgery. He’ll play a big role in the nickel package.

Injury report

Despite the miserable conditions, the Chiefs came through their first workout unscathed.

Hermisms

Instead of calling today’s workout gear “shells,” which consists of shorts and spamshirts, Herm refers to them as “spiders.” Chiefs president/general manager Carl Peterson calls any practice without pads a workout in underwear.

No. 1 defense for No. 1

Arriving to camp on time has already paid dividends for rookie Tamba Hali.

Roughly 24 hours after he agreed to contract terms and hastily hopped on a plane to River Falls, Hali was running with the No. 1 defense.

Hali, an All-America defensive end from Penn State, was playing with the first unit for much of the spring, when longtime veteran starter Eric Hicks was recovering from shoulder surgery. Hicks was back Friday, but he was practicing with the second unit.

Edwards said his rotation will provide defensive linemen with plenty of playing time, and the Hali-Hicks battle will go on through the preseason.

“Competition is what training camp is about,” Edwards said. “I told people that at the meeting today. I told them you need to be an available player if you’re going to make this squad. You’re not going to make it on default. You need to be available, and if you are, that means you can be graded. If you’re not, that’s not very good.”
