Typically, it Giants/Yankees, Jets/Mets. To go a step furhter, it's usually G/Y/Rangers, J/M/Islanders. I'd guess that 65% of Giants fans are Yankee fans, and 70% of Jets fans are Mets fans.

That's pretty much the way it goes. Why, Giants used to play home games at Yankee Stadium and the Jets at Shea. My reasoning on it anyway. :D

I have no idea as to why, but that is how I saw it breaking down...

I'm from CT so had access to all the Mets, Yanks, Jets and Giants games. I liked the Giants as long as I can remember. When I started getting into baseball I enjoyed watching both the Mets and Yankees. The Yanks had Ricky Henderson, Willie Randolf, Mattingly, Winfield, etc...but I fell in love with the '86 Mets. I was 15 that year. I probably watched every single game. We're talking Lenny Dykstra before the roids and gambling...he was a scrappy little guy and he'd get on base any way imaginable. He and Wally Backman would set the table and Hernandez, Carter and Straw would bring them home. They were so amazing that year, just really exciting to watch. I'll never forget that moment when the ball went thru Buckner's legs and I started yelling like a madman and my mom got out of bed to see what the fuss was about. Don't think I've ever been that excited for anything in sports since then. Scott Norwood's missed FG is pretty close though. :D

So I was hooked on the Mets from then on...but after winning the series, the core of the team either retired or moved on and they became the laughingstock of the NL. I was at Shea when Anthony Young set the record for most losses in a season (19).

Now the Mets are good again and I live in MD. I took my girlfriend to Shea for fireworks night a few weeks ago...first time I'd been back to the stadium since the early 90's. I haven't really followed baseball much since then...all the player movement and the lack of a salary cap makes it a joke IMO, not to mention recent events. But we had a blast at the stadium and it really brought back a lot of memories.

I am seeing another pattern of old guard (Giants, Yankees, Rangers, Knicks) vs new guard (Jets, Mets, Islanders, Nets(?) ).

This is the reason for the split. It is become more blurred now but from the 60's, 70's, 80's and early 90's this held true. Now you have more crossing over as time has past. I personally have been a Mets and Giants fan and really don't get to much into the other sports.

This is so easy I don't need any bait or lures..... just a swivel and the scent of tears :D

Damn your poetic for a big guy....anyway, I know about you and your reputation so I will take a step back and bow out gracefully....just like Kirby Pucket would do....if he were still alive.

Also, there was a time when the Giants and Yankees were only game in town , before Met expansion and AFL Jets.

1958 and 1959.

Baseball's Giants and Dodgers moved after the 1957 season

The Jets first season was 1960 as the Titans.
