Spears Hurting

Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells couldn't give a specific diagnosis on Marcus Spears' knee injury earlier Saturday, but said the second-year defensive end was scheduled to have an MRI that afternoon.

Spears left practice Saturday morning with a sprained knee and didn't return for the afternoon session. He is the projected starter at left defensive end, ahead of Kenyon Coleman and Jay Ratliff.

Parcells said he might consider moving third-round pick Jason Hatcher from right to left end, though he doesn't want to overload the rookie.

If Saturday's tests confirm the preliminary diagnosis of a damaged meniscus, Parcells said Spears would have surgery Sunday to repair the knee and probably miss two weeks of practice. But he also suggested Spears still would be able to play in three preseason games.

"I wouldn't be writing Spears off at this point," Parcells said.

Greg Ellis' role in the defensive rotation could change if Spears misses time. Ellis is a career defensive end, but the Cowboys want to use him as a hybrid outside linebacker in the 3-4.
