Fincher and Faine went at it! During 5 on 5 drills Fincher and Faine got tangled together, and it didn't stop when the whistle blew. It was good to see the fire from both of them. It took coaches and players to pull them apart.

This afternoon was in full gear. The hitting is starting to pick up. It is very obvious that Bush is special. On one sweep right, Steve Gleason took a perfect angle and was able to make the "hit" 10 YARDS DOWNFIELD. Gleason obviously respected RB's speed or he wouldn't have taken the angle he did. Any sharper angle and Bush scores!

Brees was throwing well this afternoon and continues to look sharper and sharper. On one play during 11 on 11 he threw a laser that went 50 yards to Colston in the rear left corner of the endzone. This was not a touch pass. It had zip! Not two minutes later he threw another long pass with touch, lofting over the DB into the hands of Jamal Jones, who I am becoming more impressed with every day. It really seems that J. Horn, Jones, and Hass are becoming his favorite WR targets.

Karney was again a beast coming out of the backfield. He is going to really surprise a lot of people this year with his hands, in addition to his blocking. Defenses will not know who to defend!

Among the big guys, Villarreal finally stepped up and showed some real promise. He looked really good in one particular drill, using excellent footwork in moving side to side to cover the field. When he learns to handle the blocking of O linemen, he could be special. Bryant Young and Leisle just absolutely blew up Alford in a different rep of the same drill that Fincher and Faine got going in. Young by himself also had a great play in the next rep he took. The same happened with a rep w/ Hollis and Whitehead. This drill involved the middle of the Oline with the QB handing off to the fullback, going against the DT's and LB's. Fun drill to watch. There were some nice hits. Hollis Thomas is definitely a beast!

On offense, the starters continue to impress, with Nesbit taking most of the contact reps with the occasional spell from Z. Strief, who is massive. He goes 300 lbs., and is learning quickly how to use it. He could start in a year or two, and should see some PT this year in relief.

I thought that the top tier DB's all looked good in the 11 on 11 drills. Again, Bryan Scott had another break up. They consistently kept Bouman from throwing, causing him to hold the ball too long. Unless Horn or Hass was in the pattern with their ability to gain separation, Bouman usually got in trouble from the pash rush. When Drew Brees was in, he moved around and found someone on the run. His mobility really surprised me. We are in for a good year. The younger guys continue to do well in drills, but seem to have trouble when the action gets real. They are all pretty much buying into the moves of the better receivers. Some improvement is evident, however.

AMac continued to work with the QB's, but also still worked on kickoff and punt return again, though he did a bit better than this morning. There were not nearly as many bobbles and no drops this afternoon.

The TE's continue to impress in passing drills. Again, Hilton, Conwell, and Euhus seem to be heads above the others. (No pun with Zach intended!:hihi: )

Everybody knows Bennett is doing well, but as we expect him to be traded, I took the time to focus on Stecker. He got to the hole quickly today, and had excellent burst and cuts once there. He really does do a nice job. I think that Deuce will be ready, personally, but if he isn't, we are going to be OK with Stecker.

Branch and Joseph seem to be longshots, but do not look too bad in their own right. They just aren't in the same level as the others. Freddy Mac, wearing his new #32, is also hitting holes well, and looks like an ageless wonder. I really hope he stays, but I fear that there is so much competition, that there may not be room for him. The same with the injured Beerman, who was there, but not participating in drills. He did a lot of running and conditioning drills on his own. Stinch was back in today, but in a limited capacity. I did not see him take part in any of the real contact drills.

Polley, Fincher, and Fujita seem to be the frontrunners in the LB race. Foreman is right behind. Bockwoldt and the others are not getting many reps with the first team, though every now and then Russell Rabe shows off on a big play.
